TRAVERSE CITY - Mary Moutsatson, 90, of Traverse City, left this life on Friday, Nov. 7, at Martin Luther Memorial Home in Holt, ending many years in a valiant struggle with Alzheimer's disease to finally be at rest and peace with God. Born Oct. 18, 1913, in Ishpeming, she was the daughter of Anthony and Despina (Lafkas) Govatos. On Nov. 17, 1934, in Ely, Minn., she married Peter J. "P.J." She and Peter started their life together sharing the ownership and operation of the Candyland Restaurant in Benton Harbor, subsequently moving to Midland in 1941 and starting the P.J. Sandwich Shop, retiring in 1948. They then built their summer vacation cottage in Traverse City at the base of East Bay, moving there permanently in 1957. In childhood years, Mary and her three brothers and a younger sister were orphaned, and continued to live in Minnesota and Marquette, spread among various families to be cared for. During this very difficult period of hard times existence, Mary, being brave and self-determined, took her sister in hand and walked to the nearby Salvation Army in Marquette, and asked to be taken in. She was received, and lived and served there for a lengthy period of time. The Salvation Army, from then on, held a very special position in these little girls' hearts for the rest of their lives. The remaining orphaned siblings managed to stay fully connected, supportive and close all their lives. Family, extended family and friends were most important in the life of Mary. She was very dedicated to fashionable, custom sewing, fitting and tailoring. Traverse City offered the joys of boating, swimming, snow skiing and water skiing with family and friends. The door was always open to friends and relatives sharing in the love and food of a true, total family. She will be forever thought of and missed.
