Our dear baby girl, there's a spot in our hearts that will always be saved just for you. And when we finally meet you in heaven, we'll all be together - a happy family. TRAVERSE CITY - Eugene Campbell Willings died Thursday evening of complications of congested heart failure. He was born in Millersburg, Mich. on Aug. 25, 1909, and as Millersburg's oldest living native was parade marshal for the Millersburg Centennial in 2001. Gene attended Millersburg and Onaway schools as well as Western Michigan University. After being honorably discharged from the Navy in 1944, Gene married Mabel Ruth Doyle in Alpena. They started dating because they both enjoyed dancing and always said they hoped they'd never be too old to dance. When the Michigan Employment Security Commission was formed, he was one of the first employees. He served as branch manager in Alpena until his retirement in 1981 after 42 years with the commission. Most important to Gene was his family: daughters Barb Chrzan (Carl) in Alpena and Bonnie Willings (Lou Colombo) in Traverse City, granddaughter Heather Chrzan Kirschner (Travis) also of Traverse City, and grandson Eric Chrzan, a student at Central Michigan University. Mabel Ruth preceded him in death in 1995. He is also survived by his sister Esther Magnuson in Minneapolis. Gene was an avid card player, especially enjoying bridge, euchre, smear and spitzer. He was a regular member of the Friday night euchre game at the senior center and just one week ago played bridge with his weekly group of 20 men. Gene never missed an opening day of hunting or fishing season, though what he did at camp was always a mystery to his family since he never owned a gun or fishing pole and didn't cook. He was an active member of the Congregational Church in Alpena, serving on the deacon board. He regularly attended the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City since moving to Traverse City two years ago. He was a member of the Lions and Elks Clubs, Alpena Yacht Club and Winyah. Other relatives preceded him in death include his parents Richard and Lizzie B. (Canham) Willings and siblings Gertrude, Charles, Bonnie and Dorothy. A memorial service will be held Monday, Nov. 17 at 11 a.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City with Rev. Becky Chamberlain officiating. After cremation, burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Alpena. Memorials may be made to your local library or hospital. Arrangements by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
