Things We Remember An old Dutch farm near Middeville was the playground for growing up, Three boys, three girls and animals galore (with plenty of stalls to muck). He left the farm for Alma College where his love of music grew, At school he also met our Mom, becoming the dad his children knew. We'd sit on the porch to shuck corn and snap peas he'd harvested from the land: A fairy kingdom of stalks and shoots grown from the magic in his hands. A cook, a canner, a baker and chef who amazed us with his art, Family meals were integral to our growing up: cooking, a matter of the heart. Divorce and geography made it impossible to see him every day, But our visits always turned into adventures, as his odd sense of humor had its way. His talents behind a camera kept us eager to smile and pose, And he'd say "The camera doesn't lie - yes, you've all inherited the Velderman Nose!" John Denver and Dolly were frequently playing whenever a radio was near, And he'd say their music was the only kind not offensive to a discerning ear. His dreams of life were usually bigger than reality could every prove, And his quicksilver schemes to improve his lot constantly kept him on the move. These last two years he chose to settle down and be near his family once more, An it wasn't unusual when we were least expecting it to hear him knocking at the door. We are grateful for the time given to us: all the laughter and fun we had, And hope you know, from all our hearts, we love and will miss you, Dad. The family wishes in invite those who knew Ted to a Memorial Service in his honor at the L.A.U.M. Christian Education Center at 6583 First Street in downtown Lake Ann on Tuesday, November 18, at 1 p.m. Further questions should be directed to Todd at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
