November 17, 2003ObituariesBENZONIA - Lila M. Smeltzer, 85, of Benzonia, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at The Maples–Benzie County Medical Care Facility in Frankfort.She was born Sept. 21, 1918, in Elberta, the daughter of Wilmer and Anna (Pettis) Gray. Lila had worked at Hazzard's Sewing Shop in Frankfort, and then as a nurse's aide at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital, and later at The Maples until her retirement. Lila was an active member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Frankfort, where she had been the leader of the community service program. In her spare time, Lila enjoyed sewing, playing music, going shopping and baking, especially her famous date-filled cookies. She also enjoyed quilting, having made many quilts for her family and friends. Most of all, Lila loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Lila is survived by two sons, Thomas Smeltzer of Arcadia and Glen "Fred" (Karen) Smeltzer of Holland; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Frances (Ira) Tarwell of Cheboygan, Elizabeth Blood of Holland, Gertrude Burley of Frankfort and Ruby (Leroy) Rohn of Frankfort; two sisters-in-law, Wanda Gray of Traverse City and Anna Gray of Frankfort; and numerous nieces and nephews. On Sept. 8, 1937, in Elberta, Lila married Glenn S. Smeltzer, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a son, Richard Smeltzer; three sisters, Zelma Gray, Virginia Gray and Emma Blood; and three brothers, Wilmer Gray Jr., Robert Gray and William Gray. Visitation will be held this evening, Nov. 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 18, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Frankfort, with Elders Jeff Berquist and Arthur Covell officiating. Interment will follow in Gilmore Township Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Seventh Day Adventist Church Community Service Kitchen Project. Envelopes are available at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home. BUCKLEY - Melvin Leroy Timerman, 59, of Buckley, died Friday, Nov. 14, 2003, at his home. He was born Dec. 2, 1943, in Detroit, the son of Vernor and Jacqueline (Deeren) Timerman. Melvin was a lifelong resident of the Traverse City and Interlochen areas, and was a sign painter and artist who was well-known in the area. He had painted signs for many local businesses, as well as having been a truck driver for many years. In his spare time, Melvin enjoyed working on old cars, and was a member of the Old Car Club in Traverse City. He also liked hunting and fishing, going to the casino, traveling and watching movies, especially westerns and comedies. On May 20, 1990, in Buckley, Melvin married Wanda M. Famiano, who survives. He is also survived by his mother, Jacqueline Miller of Colorado Springs, Colo.; two daughters, Cynthia (Matthew) Clark of Thompsonville and Shelly (James) Heflin of Colorado Springs; two sons, James (Tressie) Timerman of Colorado Springs and Shaun (Deina Zerby) Timerman of Colorado Springs; three stepchildren, Douglas Bostick of Interlochen, Michelle (Patrick) Gainey of Sun Prairie, Wis., and Renee Famiano of Waunakee, Wis.; five grandchildren, Rachelle Decker, Dustin Decker, Kurt Timerman, Greggory Royer and Kelly Frank; 12 stepgrandchildren; his brother, Jerry (Patricia) Timerman of Colorado Springs; his niece, Darla Forback of Colorado Springs; his nephew, Joe Timerman of Colorado Springs; his former wife, Helen Timerman of Thompsonville; and many others who knew him as grandpa Mel and uncle Mel. Melvin was preceded in death by his father, Vernor Timerman, in 1990. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Nov. 18, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Interlochen, with Pastor James Waulkazoo officiating. The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah is in charge of arrangements. DAVID T. 'TOM' CLARK, 94, of Lake Ann, died Sunday morning, Nov. 16, 2003, at his home. Friends may call Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at Bible Methodist Church in Grawn. A complete obituary will appear in Tuesday's Record-Eagle. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. JAMES W. PILLARS, 65, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003.
