Obituaries

      LAWRENCE J. CZAJKA, 68, of Honor, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003.
      Private family services will be held.
      Arrangements have been handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City.
      ROY MILFORD FORTIER, 81, went to be with his Lord Monday, Nov. 17, 2003.
      A Memorial Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Manistee, with Monsignor Gerard F. Guzikowski, celebrant.
      The family will be at the church from 9 a.m. until the time of services to receive friends.
      The Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of arrangements.
      RICHARD 'DICK' McCUMBY, "The Coffee Man," 73, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Friday, Nov. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
      Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

      MARGARET E. NICHOLLS, 97, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Nancy C. Pinna, 65, of Traverse City, formerly of Flint, died at her home Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003.
      Nancy was born June 11, 1938, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, the daughter of Elmer and Ina (Foster) Craft.
      Nancy was employed at Meijer as a greeter. She loved her job and enjoyed meeting people. She loved her family and grandchildren.
      She is survived by two sons, Marty (Jane) Pinna of Mesick and Steve (Grace) Garcia of Anaheim Hills, Calif.; daughter, Sherry Otsuka of Huntington Beach, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Eric and Nicholas Pinna of Mesick, Tommy Garcia of Anaheim Hills, Calif., Jamie (Michael) Shotwell of Orange, Calif., Tommy Zaby of Villa Park, Calif., and Tiana Otsuka of Huntington Beach, Calif.; two great-grandchildren, Conner and Carly Shotwell of Orange, Calif.; two step-brothers, Tom (Peggy) Gibbs and Larry (Julie) Gibbs; a step-sister, Lois Cessilini; and several step-nieces and step-nephews.
      Nancy was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Ivan Gibbs; her son, Joseph Pinna in 1985; and step-brother, Jerry Gibbs.
      Visitation will take place Thursday, Nov. 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley, with a scripture service at 6 p.m.
      A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, at St. Mary of Hannah Catholic Church, with Rev. Michael Janowski as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will be in St. Mary of Hannah Cemetery.
      Memorials may be given in Nancy's name to St. Mary of Hannah School. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Dale A. Bopry, 49, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Nov. 16, at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Nov. 3, 1954, in Traverse City, he was the son of Robert Edwin and Barbara Jean (Trobaugh) Bopry.
      A lifelong resident of the Traverse City area, Dale worked as a purchasing agent for a number of years, most recently with Illinois Tool Works. He had a strong passion for outdoor activities, which included sailing, golfing, camping, canoeing and hiking.
      Dale is survived by his mother, Barbara Jean Bopry of Traverse City; four brothers, Daniel R. (Sue) Bopry, Gary W. Bopry, Thomas B. Bopry, Michael S. (Kathy) Bopry and their four children, Desiree, Elise, and twins Jared and Kyle, all of Traverse City; one sister, Jeanette Bopry of Singapore; and his maternal grandmother, Erma Sharp of Casa Grande, Ariz.; and his pet dog, Bernie.
      He was preceded in death by his father.
      Cremation has taken place. A memorial open house will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Grand Traverse Yacht Club, 13615 S. West Bayshore Drive, Traverse City, MI 49684.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to a Humane Society or to a charity of choice.

      CADILLAC - Mary Louise (Wucker) Werner, 66, died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      She was born in Niles on Jan. 19, 1937, to John Martin and Edna May (Carpenter) Wucker. She lived in Cadillac for all but two years of her life, and graduated from Cadillac High School in 1955. She married Theodore Kay Werner on May 10, 1969, in Cadillac.
      Mrs. Werner retired in 1992 after working for 31 years at the Wexford County Road Commission. She loved animals, gardening, family genealogy research and knitting. She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church.
      Survivors include her husband, Theodore Kay Werner; brothers, William and Howard (Eulah) Wucker of Cadillac and John (Helena) Wucker of Lake City; niece, Diane (Randy) Hamilton of Lake City; two great-nieces and two great-nephews; brother-in-law, Leonard Werner of New Orleans; and her sister-in-law, Janet (Bill) Ward of Cadillac.
      She was preceded in death by her father in 1983; her mother in 1994; nephews, Joseph Wucker in 1986, and Gregory Wucker in 2001; great-nephew, Gabriel Hamilton, in 1983; and sisters-in-law, Pauline Wucker in 1996, and Mary Lou Richardson in 1997.
      Visitation will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. this evening, Nov. 19, at Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac.
      Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 20, at the funeral home, with Rev. Glenn Bearss officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Cadillac.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Missaukee County Humane Society or to the Wexford County Human Society. Envelopes are available at Peterson Funeral Home, Cadillac.

      OLD MISSION - Ann Donald Wunsch of Old Mission, a former teacher, editor and fruit grower, died Nov. 12, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was 80.
      Mrs. Wunsch was born in Detroit to Douglas Donald and Edna Soule. She graduated from Vassar College in 1943, where she studied English literature and art history.
      During World War II, Ann worked as a script editor for the Jam Handy Film Company in Detroit. Following the war, she was employed as a features editor for the Detroit News.
      In 1947, she married Ellis Wunsch. After a year of study in Dijon, France, the Wunsches settled in Old Mission to pursue farming, teaching and raising a family.
      The Wunsches were leaders in the formation of the Old Mission Peninsula School in the early 1950s, and Ann was closely involved in the creation of the Peninsula Community Library.
      An artist, Ann painted and studied art at Northwestern Michigan College. She was a member of the Maple Grove Women's Club, the Friendly Garden Club and the Michigan Farm Bureau.
      The family moved to Ann Arbor in the 1960s, where Ann earned a master's degree in art history for the University of Michigan, and later taught at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Detroit.
      Throughout the years, Ann returned to Old Mission each summer to help manage the annual cherry harvest.
      Upon the Wunsches' retirement to Peninsula Township, Ann tutored at the Old Mission Peninsula School. She was also a lifelong reader and gardener. Her greatest passion, however, was her children and grandchildren, who she described as "the pride and delight of my life" during a recent interview for the Women's History Project of Northwest Michigan.
      She leaves her brother, Douglas Donald of Grosse Pointe Farms; two sons, Joshua (Barbara) of Old Mission and Charles (Barbara) of Minneapolis; two daughters, Sarah of New York and Anne Myers (David) of Boston; and eight grandchildren.
      Her husband, Ellis, preceded her in death in 1991.
      A memorial service will be held Dec. 27 at the Old Mission Congregational Church.
