Obituaries

      LOUELLEN FRALEY, 63, of Kaleva, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at her home.
      Visitation will be held Friday, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home.
     
      NAOMI 'ROSE' PUGH, 71, of South Boardman, died at her home Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003.
      No services have been planned at this time.
      Arrangements are being handled by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
     
      LEO EARL RITTENHOUSE, 65, of Traverse City, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at his home, surrounded by his family and best friend.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City Friday, Nov. 21, from 5 to 8 p.m.
      Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 2 p.m.
      A full obituary will appear in the next issue of the Record-Eagle.
     
      FRANKFORT - Mary Alice Younglove Classens, 91, of Frankfort, passed away Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, at The Maples.
      She was born March 18, 1912, on a 60-acre farm outside of Adrian, the second child of William and Fannie Younglove.
      Mary Alice graduated from high school in 1929 and spent several years working and attending college. She received a life certificate and a BA degree from Adrian College in 1935.
      The following year, Mary Alice obtained and elementary position in Elberta. During that year she met her future husband, Cornelius Classens, and they were married in 1937.
      The Classens went into business in 1938, gradually expanding to three stories selling men's clothing, shoes and children's wear. Cornelius died in 1974, but Mary Alice continued with the store for another 25 years, putting in a grand total of 61 years on Main Street. She loved being at the store, where she could meet and visit with people.
      Mary Alice was an active member of organizations including the Frankfort Study Club, West End Civic, Frankfort Community Association, and the Frankfort Congregational Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. In her leisure time, she enjoyed bowling, bridge, and spending time at the cottage on Crystal Lake with family and friends.
      Preceding Mary Alice in death were her husband, Cornelius; her parents; and her brother, Leroy.
      She is survived by two daughters, Carol (Robert) Beidler and Connie Bennehoff of Frankfort; four grandchildren, Craig Beidler of Germany, Lisa MacHugh of Frankfort, Dawn Quinn of Virginia and Evan Bennehoff Jr. of Mason; and seven great-grandchildren.
      Friends may call at the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, Friday, Nov. 21, from 3 to 7 p.m.
      Services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at the Frankfort Congregational Church, with Pastor Dinah Haag officiating. Burial will be in Crystal Lake Township Cemetery North.
      Memorial may be directed to either the Frankfort Congregational Church or The Maples.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Nancy Anne Upham Gordon, 70, best friend and wife of Bill Gordon for 48 years, died at home after a courageous battle with cancer. She died with the same style and grace with which she lived.
      Born in Middletown, Conn., Nancy Upham grew up in Waterford. She received her bachelor's degree and teaching certificate from Central Michigan University in 1955 and married Bill the same year. She and Bill lived in Warren from 1963 to 1991, when they moved to their cottage on Green Lake and became full-time residents.
      Along with raising her children, Nancy taught school as a substitute, became a yoga teacher and had a small flower arranging business, "Creations by Nancy."
      Nancy was a creative spirit and lover of life and nature. She was an avid gardener and gifted flower arranger and quilter.
      After moving to Interlochen, Nancy became a year-round volunteer at the Interlochen Center for the Arts. She appreciated the many wonderful friends she made through several area quilt groups, Newcomers Club, and several bridge and potluck groups.
      Nancy's loved ones include her devoted and loving husband, Bill; her brother, Jay Upham and his wife, Donna; her children, Kelly Gordon Jacobsma and her husband, Robert, Scott Gordon and his wife, Barb, and Tracy Gordon VanDusen and her husband, Roger; and her five grandchildren, Hannah, Nicole, Julie, Gordon and Morgan.
      A memorial service will be held at the Presbyterian Church, 701 Westminster, (Airport Access Road), in Traverse City, on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Goodwill Inn (homeless shelter) of Traverse City or the Interlochen Public Library.
      Arrangements were provided by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Richard "Dick" McCumby, 73, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Nov. 18, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      Born June 15, 1930, in Cheboygan, he was the son of George and Bertha (Spray) McCumby. On Oct. 14, 1951, in Lansing, he married the former Reva Case, who preceded him in death in 1986.
      Dick moved to Lansing in 1937 and graduated from Lansing High School in 1947. He served his country honorably with the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1955. After the service, Dick resided in Lansing, Mackinaw City, Cheboygan and finally to Traverse City in 1962.
      He had been employed for Straits Distributors in Cheboygan from 1957 to 1964, and also for Waddell Buick, Joslin Chevrolet, Montgomery Ward, Long Lake Inn and Canteen. Dick finally opened 'The Coffee Man,' an office coffee service, retiring in January 2000.
      Survivors include Barbara Farrell, his significant other for many years whom he loved very much; his children, Susan K. McCumby, Michael G. and Marcy (Saxton) McCumby, and Jill M. McCumby; two grandchildren, Cameron and Jessy; and his half-brother and half-sister, Chuck McCumby and Barbara Walsh.
      He is also survived by Barbara Farrell's family, Betty (Marty) Clement and family, Kathy (Butch) Carmien and family, Gary (Ann) Chouinard and family, and Lynn (Rick) Flora and family.
      Along with his wife Reva, Dick was also preceded in death by his parents and half-sister, Patricia Albow.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home on Friday, Nov. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
      Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. John Ellinger officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.
     
      FRANKFORT - Ruth V. Mix, 86, of Frankfort, died Monday afternoon at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital.
      Ruth was born March 19, 1917, in Dayton, Ky., the daughter of Odelin and Edna (Woods) Schneider.
      Ruth moved to Battle Creek shortly after World War II, and then moved to Frankfort in 1976. She was a member and past president of the Periwinkle Garden Club, a member of Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, and worked as a volunteer in the hospital's gift shop.
      Ruth was a supporter of the Frankfort Library, Benzie County Animal Welfare League and Paul Oliver's CAT scan program.
      Three husbands preceded Ruth in death, Frank Martin, William Walsh and Albert Mix; and a sister, Edith Kramer.
      Ruth is survived by a brother, Harold Schneider of Florida; and a sister, Gladys Barth of Ohio; and several nieces and nephews.
      Cremation has taken place and no services are scheduled.
      Memorials in Ruth's name may be directed to the Benzie Shores District Library, Animal Welfare League, or Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital CAT Scan Fund.
      The Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, assisted the family.
