Obituaries

      KENNETH CHARLES LAWRENCE, 90, of Frankfort, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Memorial services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. The family will receive friends Monday from noon until time of services at the funeral home.
     
      CAROL JEAN LUINSTRA, 55, of Grawn, died Sunday, Nov. 23, 2003, at her sister's home in Copemish.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 29, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Suttons Bay, with visitation one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Lutheran Cemetery.
      A full obituary will appear in the Friday edition of the Record-Eagle.
      Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay is handling arrangements.
     
      MARY L. McLAREN, 82, of Beulah, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes.
     
     
ROBERT E. MORRISON
, 61, of Mancelona, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at his home.
      Visitation will take place Saturday, Nov. 29, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 20, at the funeral home.
     
     
JOSEPH T. STAFFNIK
, 99, of Manistee, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, in Grand Rapids.
      Visitation will take place Friday, Nov. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, with prayers at 7:30 p.m.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 29, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Burial will immediately follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Manistee.
     
     
MARIE THORNBURG
, 90, of Mancelona, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
      Visitation will take place Friday, Nov. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Mancelona Church of the Nazarene.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 29, at the church.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
     
      TAMPA, Fla. -
Philip J. Patterson Jr.
, 38, of Tampa, Fla., formerly of Onsted, passed away suddenly Saturday evening, Nov. 22, 2003, in Tampa.
      He was born May 16, 1965, in Monroe, the son of Philip J. and Annette (Levine) Patterson Sr. He was raised in Monroe, and lived in Onsted, Rapid City and in Tennessee before moving to Tampa five years ago.
      A graduate of Monroe High School, Philip married Vicki Lee Mingledorff on Feb. 3, 1984, in Monroe. He was a laborer and truck driver and enjoyed hunting, fishing and motorcycles.
      Philip is survived by his wife, Vicki of Onsted; three sons, Bill, David and Dan Patterson, all of Onsted; his parents, Philip and Annette Patterson Sr. of Onsted; two brothers, Robert (Donna) Patterson and Steven (Annette) Patterson, all of Monroe; a sister, Jeanna Patterson of Rapid City; his paternal grandmother, Vera Patterson of Onsted; nephews, nieces and cousins.
      He was preceded in death by a brother in infancy; his maternal grandparents; and his paternal grandfather.
      Visitation will take place Friday, Nov. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Dunn Chapel, Brown-Van Hemert Funeral Home, in Onsted.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 29, at the funeral home, with Pastor Tom McMichael officiating. Interment will be at 11 a.m., Monday, Dec. 1, in Maple Shade Cemetery in Onsted.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.

      BOKEELIA, Fla. -
Bernard Wayne Cook
, 69, of Bokeelia, Fla., died at his residence Wednesday, Nov. 19, 2003, after an extended battle with cancer.
      He was born in L'Anse and had been a resident of Bokeelia for the past 17 years. Bernie was a resident of Benzonia for 14 years and owned the Cook's Inn restaurant for several years. He was also active in the Chamber of Commerce in Beulah.
      He is survived by his wife, Kathleen; daughters, Pamela (Tom) Huissen of Fremont, Sheila (Brian) Kyllonen of Lowell, and son Gregory (Lisa) Cook of Walhonding, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; four brothers; Ray (Alda) Cook of Benzonia, Darrell (Doris) Cook of Traverse City, Lyle (Winifred) Cook of Frankfort and James (Arlene) Cook of Boyce, La.; three sisters; Blanche Clark of Beulah, Carol (Fred) Ehman of Lapeer and Janet (Joseph) Smeltzer of Frankfort.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Isabelle Mendenhall.
      A memorial service was held Sunday, Nov. 23, at the First Baptist Church in Matlacha, Fla.

      TRAVERSE CITY -
Ivan O. Grose
, 66, of Traverse City, died peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at home. Formerly of Kalkaska, Rapid City and California, he had been a resident of Traverse City since 1972.
      Ivan served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked for the King City Police Department in California for eight years and wore Badge #1 when he retired. Also while in California, he managed a chain of truck stops.
      In Traverse City, Ivan worked for the City of Traverse City for 20 years and had become sexton of Oakwood Cemetery in 1991.
      Ivan and his wife, Irene were very well-known for collecting and fixing broken toys for under-privileged children, and with the help of the Traverse City Fire Department, distributed them at Christmas time.
      Ivan enjoyed flying radio controlled model airplanes and was a member of T.R.A.M.P.S. He was proud of the fact that he fulfilled his dreams of becoming a licensed pilot, flying his own plane and becoming a police officer.
      Born June 18, 1937, in Kalkaska, he was the son of Orville W. and Eleanor A. (Case) Grose. On June 10, 1972, in Traverse City, he married the former Irene J. Keech, who survives.
      Also surviving are eight children, Ivanna (Abe) Victorino of Lockwood, Calif., Robin (Karrell) Olmstead of Elgin, Okla., Harvey (Debbie) Grose of South Boardman, Brenda (Jeff) Jerrett of Old Mission, Richard (Brenda) Rattray of South Boardman, Darrell (Brenda) Rattray of Cedar, Teena (Randy) Skelton of Traverse City and Buddy (Chris) Rattray of Kalkaska; three brothers, Ernest (Phyllis) Grose of Traverse City, Dan (Peggy) Grose of Traverse City and Timothy Grose of Carrolton, Mo.; four sisters, Esther Brown of Charlevoix, Naomi Peterson of Traverse City, Leah (Nelson) Kage of Oxford and Mazie (Donald) Elwood of Denver, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Roseane Stoops; and two brothers, Joseph and James Grose.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Friday, Nov. 28, from 5 to 8 p.m.
      Services will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Clearwater Township Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to either the Traverse City Fire Department for the Toys for Kids Program, which Ivan and Irene founded, or to Munson Hospice.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY -
Betty Anne Taylor
, 81, formerly of DeWitt, died Tuesday at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Born March 9, 1922, in Lansing, she was the daughter of Freda L. (Southick) and Robert C. Williams.
      Betty met her husband while working at Oldsmobile in Lansing. After Ron's retirement, they moved to Beaverton. She was a member of the Eastern Star and her hobbies included sewing, knitting, baking, golfing, reading, bowling and playing cards.
      She is survived by her children, Robert (Linda) Hegle of Grass Valley, Calif., Debbie Day of Holt, Marlene (David) Ford of Traverse City, John (Rochelle) Taylor of Portland; a sister, Mary Williams, of Lansing; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
      Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald J. Taylor; her parents; a sister, Louise Kennedy; and her brothers, Ron and Don Williams.
      Services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29, at the DeWitt Chapel of the Gorsline-Runciman Co., 111 S. Franklin, in DeWitt.
      Visitation will take place at the funeral home on Friday evening, Nov. 28, from 6 until 8 p.m.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to The Beaverton Branch Library, 128 Saginaw, Beaverton, MI 48612.

      TRAVERSE CITY -
Myrtle "Louise" Spears
, 79, of Traverse City and formerly of Morley, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 2003, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Louise was born in Paducah, Ky., Nov. 30, 1923, the daughter of Isham and Birtha (Allen) Davis. She worked as a sales clerk for Kmart and belonged to the Church of Christ.
      Louise is survived by four daughters, Shari (Jack) Capehart of Traverse City, Sandra Easterly of Jackson, Daleta Blan of Taylor and Debra Powers of Roann, Ind.; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; her cousin, Madge Russel of Paducah, Ky.; her brother-in-law, LeRoy "Lee" Floyed of New Boston; and several nieces and nephews.
      Visitation will take place Friday, Nov. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 29, at the funeral home, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Mr. Patrick Powers will officiate. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
      The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Grand Traverse Pavilions for the exceptional treatment given to their mother and grandmother.
      Memorial contributions may be given in her name to the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      PLYMOUTH -
Jeff Nelson
, 42, of Plymouth, passed away suddenly Tuesday evening, Nov. 25, 2003, at his home.
      He married Julie Rokos, daughter of Bud and Lillian Couturier, on April 20, 1985. She survives.
      He is also survived by a daughter, Emily; his parents, Ken and Nancy Nelson; three sisters, Shelly Nelson, Lisa (Steve) Griffin, Amy (Mark) Grenier; his paternal grandmother, Ruth Nelson; three uncles; two nephews and three nieces.
      Visitation will be held at the Schrader-Howell Funeral Home in Plymouth, Friday, Nov. 28, with services to be held at the Holy Trinity Church on Saturday, Nov. 29.
     
      MANCELONA -
Evida A. Biehl
, 79, of Mancelona, died Wednesday, Nov. 26, 2003, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
      She was born, March 19, 1924, in Alger, Mich., the daughter, of Lee and Cora (Jenks) Donaldson.
      Evida was a member of the Mancelona Missionary Church. She worked for the Mancelona Ambulance for many years and was also the local coordinator for The Salvation Army. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting.
      On Sept. 28, 1941, in Mancelona, she married Robert Biehl, who survives.
      Also surviving are a daughter, Jann (Jerry) Bach of Mancelona; a son, Bobb (Cheryl) Biehl of Sanford, Fla.; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two sisters, Bertha Batterbee and Lois (Wayne) Noaker, both of Avon Park, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Jenny Leigh Bach; three brothers, Delbert, Leland and Kenneth Donaldson; and her parents.
      Visitation will take place Friday, Nov. 28, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 29, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Charles Batterbee officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Mancelona Missionary Church, or to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
