October 7, 2003ObituariesOLD MISSION - Jason R. Wares, 35, of Old Mission, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at his home.He was born July 19, 1968, in Traverse City, the son of Jerry E. and Marilyn (Smith) Wares. On Dec. 3, 1992, in Traverse City, he married the former LeeAnn Smith. Jason is survived by his wife, LeeAnn Wares of Old Mission; his parents, Jerry and Marilyn Wares of Old Mission, two brothers, Richard "Jim" Wares of Escanaba and Nathan Wares of Traverse City; a sister, Jeri Lynn Wares of Traverse City; numerous nieces and nephews; and his very special lifelong friend, Matthew (Nancy) Weatherholt of Traverse City. Per Jason's request, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Denay Hall, Mapleton, with Father Edwin Thome officiating. Memorials may be given in his name to Munson Hospice or the Cherryland Humane Society. Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes, Traverse City. GRAND BLANC - Mary L. Stratton, 76, died at her home in Grand Blanc Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003. She was born in Mt. Morris on Aug. 10, 1927, and was a resident of Grand Blanc most of her life. She married Larry Jerome Stratton on Jan. 24, 1948, in Mt. Morris. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 2003. Mary was a member of Eastwood United Methodist Church. Surviving are four children, Larry T. (Brenda) of Clio, Jerry L. (Kathy) of Traverse City, Cynthia (Doug) Wirsing of Flint and Margaret (Dave) Fox of Mesick; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister, Pat Strong of Lapeer; brother, Robert (Lee) Bundt of Oscoda; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at noon today, Oct. 7, at Swartz Funeral Home, 1225 West Hill Rd, in Flint. Rev. Mary Spencer will officiate. Burial will be in Flint Memorial Park. Memorial contributions may be made to Eastwood United Methodist Church, or to the Shriners Transportation Fund. TRAVERSE CITY - Robert Henry Kingdon, 91, a lifelong resident of Long Lake Township, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Mr. Kingdon served his country honorably with the United States Army from 1942 through 1946 during World War II. A former farmer, carpenter and auctioneer, he retired from Cone Drive Gear in 1974 after 22 years of service. Mr. Kingdon was a lifelong member of the Long Lake Friends Church, a former church trustee, a member of UAW-CIO Local 21, an assistant Boy Scout leader and a former vice president of the PTA at Long Lake School. He will be fondly remembered for being a good storyteller, joke teller and a person who enjoyed songs. Born April 1, 1912, on the family farm in Long Lake Township, he was the son of Henry Albert and Nellie Jane (Page) Kingdon. On Feb. 14, 1947, in Traverse City, he married the former Gwendolyn L. Page, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Andy J. (Mona) Kingdon of Charlotte and R. Dale (Michelle) Kingdon of Lake Ann; sister, Sadie (Edsel) Wilson of Buckley; brother, Thomas L. Kingdon of Greeley, Colo.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Mr. Kingdon was preceded in death by his parents; and three sisters, Jennie Hamlin, Edith Hodges and Eva Riehl. Memorial services will be held at the Long Lake Friends Church on Thursday, Oct. 9, at 2 p.m., with Pastor Keith Huffman officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to either the Long Lake Friends Church or the Long Lake Volunteer Fire Department. Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. EASTPORT - Mary M. (Schutte) Smith, 74, of Eastport and Longboat Key, Fla., died Sept. 30, 2003, in Longboat Key. She was born Oct. 3, 1928, in Detroit, and came to Eastport as a summer resident in 1984. She was a homemaker, a member of the women's organization PEO, and was active in the new library project in Central Lake. Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Paul; daughters, Deborah Berg of San Marcos, Calif., and Gerri Smith of Sacramento, Calif.; a son, Paul S. of Houston; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held in Longboat Key at 2 p.m. Oct. 24, at The Longboat Island Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Central Lake Library, a hospice organization, or to your favorite charity. SAGINAW - Retired Merrill High School teacher Carole Ann Weigand, 56, passed away Monday, Oct. 6, 2003, at Covenant - Harrison. She was born in Traverse City Jan. 3, 1947, the daughter of the late Neil and Esther (Warner) Weigand. She graduated from Traverse City Central High School in 1965. Carole received an associate of arts from Northwestern Michigan College, and bachelor of arts and master of arts degrees from Central Michigan University. Carole taught English and Spanish at Merrill High School for 31 years, retiring in 2001. She was an active member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where she was a member of the Christian Service Commission, Parish Council, a Eucharistic minister, sacristan and a team leader for funeral luncheons. She volunteered her time at the Eastside Soup Kitchen and Partnership Center. She enjoyed participating in the Thomas Township Library book discussion group and the Holy Spirit Bible Study class. She is survived by a sister, Sharon (Gary) Burkholder of Fife Lake; a niece, Sharry (Greg) Heberling and their sons, Brent and Stephen, of Big Rapids; a nephew, Eric (Jennifer) Burkholder of Oakley, Calif.; an uncle, William Weigand of Suttons Bay; and longtime friend and caregiver, Nancy Galbraith of Thomas Township. A parish vigil service led by Sr. Marie Markel, IHM, will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at the W. L. Case and Company Funeral Chapel, 201 N. Miller Rd., Saginaw, where friends may call from 3 p.m. until service time. A memorial Mass will be prayed at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, 1035 N. River Rd., Saginaw, with Fr. David Parsch presiding. Friends and family may call at the church Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the Mass. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be directed to The Partnership Center, Eastside Soup Kitchen or to the Holy Spirit Catholic Church Building Fund. TRAVERSE CITY - Nancy Marlene Burbank slipped from the loving arms of her family and friends to be embraced by the arms of good souls that went before her on Oct. 4, 2003. She was 63. Nancy will be missed and loved by her surviving children, James (Kathy) Burbank, John Burbank, Margo Griffin and Cindy McQueer; six grandchildren, Eddie, Melissa, Dustin, Kyle, Samantha and Kayla; a great-grandson, Evan; her sisters, Norma Erickson and Dorothy (Earl) Underwood; and her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Ryan; sister, Carol; and brother-in-law, Floyd. Nancy was retired from Munson Medical Center, after serving 26 years. She enjoyed visiting area casinos, crocheting, Sunday family dinners, playing cards and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Visitation will take place this evening, Oct. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Covell Funeral Homes, Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, at the funeral home, with the Rev. Louis Grettenberger officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ronald McDonald House. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. RAYMOND C. BILSKI, 81, of Manistee, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, at Tendercare of Manistee. Prayers from the Order of Christian Funerals will be prayed Wednesday, Oct. 8, at 8 p.m. at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. The family will be at the funeral home to receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Burial will follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Freesoil. Baby LEILANI DALLEY-TUDELA, infant daughter of Connie Dalley and Steven Tudela, was stillborn on Oct. 5, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Private family services will be held. The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. RALPH JUDSON DILLEY, 86, of Interlochen, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003, in Grand Rapids. Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. ARTHUR GEORGE SHERMAN III, age 58, of Traverse City, died Sunday, Oct. 5, 2003. A perpetual vigil will be held for Arthur at the family home. Please call the family or Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home for more information. A memorial service will be announced in an obituary at a later date. ROBERT DOUGLAS 'TOPPER' TOPPING, 82, of Ludington, a native of Manistee, died Saturday, Oct. 4, 2003, at Tendercare of Ludington. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, at Saint Simon Catholic Church in Ludington. Cremation took place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee. The Oak Grove Cremation Center is serving the family.
