Ehrhart, 76, of Kalkaska, passed away Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at her home, after fighting a stoic battle against lung cancer for the past 13 months.She was born Oct. 28, 1926, in Dearborn, the daughter of Alfred J. and Iva Emma (Prehn) Gottman. Iva married Donald F. Ehrhart on Dec. 4, 1944, in Boston, Mass. They were residents of Kalkaska since fall of 1995, moving from Houghton Lake. Iva and Don would have celebrated 59 years of marriage in December. She was a lifetime member of Eastern Star and a member of Kalkaska United Methodist Church. Iva enjoyed needlework and reading, and especially loved being with her family, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Iva is survived by her husband, Donald; her daughter, Gayle L. (Alfred) DeOtte of Fife Lake; her grandchildren, Amy Jean DeOtte (John) Taranko of Ludington, David Christian DeOtte of Seattle, Wash., and Ann Louise DeOtte of Fife Lake; and two great-grandchildren, Emma Ehrhart Taranko and Grace DeOtte Taranko, both of Ludington. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at Kalkaska United Methodist Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Robert Stark will be officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Iva's name may be directed to North Country Hospice, P.O. Box 1087, Kalkaska, MI 49646. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska. TRAVERSE CITY - Nancy G. Frye, 63, of Traverse City, formerly of Kingsley, died Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Born Oct. 19, 1939, in Fife Lake Township, she was the daughter of Frank and Dorothy (Harrigan) Houghton. She married H. Charles Frye on Sept. 18, 1965 in Traverse City. Nancy retired from Michigan Bell Telephone after 35 years of service. She was a member of Daisy Chain and enjoyed many activities including sewing, painting, ceramics, golf, fishing, bowling and gardening. Nancy had recently served as president of the Evergreen Cemetery Association where she had an active role in forming the soon to be completed memorial garden section. Nancy is survived by her husband, H. Charles Frye of Kingsley; stepchildren, Sharon Brigham of Traverse City and Jennifer (Tom) Coy of Ann Arbor; three granddaughters and one great-granddaughter; four sisters, Joan (Ray) Bembeneck of Traverse City, Ruth (Charlie) Stevens of Traverse City, Susan Morgan of Kingsley and Peg (Robert) Knight of Kingsley; a brother, Mick (Freda) Houghton of Kingsley; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding Nancy in death were her parents; a sister, Rosie Shearer; and a stepson, James Frye. Visitation will be held today, Oct. 12, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday from the funeral home. The Rev. Larry Ross from First Christian Church will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Kingsley. KINGSLEY - Joseph "Mike" "Hat Rack" Silva, 49, of Kingsley and formerly of Traverse City, died at his home Thursday, Oct. 9, 2003, surrounded by his loving and devoted wife, family members and close friends, under the care of Munson Hospice. Born April 30, 1954, in south Boston, Mass., he was the son of Joseph and Phyllis (Coyne) Silva. He married Victoria Ott on May 19, 2003, in Las Vegas. Mike was employed at Schmuckal Concrete Design Services. He enjoyed NASCAR, boating, cooking, shooting pool and sharing time with friends and family. He was a member of the American Military League of Traverse City, Frankfort Eagles Club, and Cherryland VFW Post 2780. Mike is survived by his wife, Victoria of Kingsley; three children, Jessica, Cora and Branden Silva of Florida, formerly of Frankfort; his mother, Phyllis Coyne of Traverse City; five sisters, Joanne (Phil) Ezzo of Traverse City, Phyl (Michael) Axtell of Traverse City, Paula McPhetres of Florida, Pamela (Travis) Kuebler of Harbor Springs and Patricia Walsh of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding Mike in death was his daughter, Janell; his father, Joseph Silva; and his maternal and paternal grandparents. At Mike's request, cremation has taken place. A celebration of life service will be held at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the American Military League, 2423 Sybrandt, Traverse City. MANCELONA - Vivian Iletta Mae Spires, 83, of Mancelona, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003 at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center-Long Term Care. She was born May 20, 1920, in Grand Rapids, the daughter of Oral and Hazel (Perham) Stratton. Vivian was a lifelong resident of Mancelona. She enjoyed baking bread and cinnamon rolls, gardening, dancing, camping, snowmobiling, and spending time with her grandchildren. On Oct. 24, 1936, in Mancelona, Vivian married Leslie Spires Sr., who preceded her in death in 1989. Also preceding her in death were two sons, Daniel and Archie Spires; a daughter, Janet Lee; a sister, Emma Justice; and a brother, John Stratton. Surviving are 10 children, Samuel (Helen) Spires of ManceIona, Leslie (Elaine) Spires Jr. of Alden, Richard (Jane) Spires Sr. of Alden, Zila (Thomas) Healey of East Jordan, Martina (Harry) Sutter of Mancelona, Gertrude (Kenneth) Westcott of Mancelona, Edna (Norman) Lanning of Mancelona, Sheryl (David) Miller of Mancelona, Bonnie (Jay) Wildfong of Mancelona and Jeanne (Eric) Hoogerhyde of Mancelona. Also surviving is a brother, Clarence (Mary Jane) Stratton of Grand Rapids; a sister-in-law, Donna Stratton of Ravenna; 26 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Yousef "Yogi" Jabara will officiate. lnterment will follow in Chapman Cemetery, Custer Township. The family will receive friends Monday, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home. CENTRAL LAKE - Lois Vanniman, 83, of Central Lake, formerly of Banks Township, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 2003, at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility, Bellaire. She was born Sept. 13, 1920, in Custer Township, the daughter of Charles and Jessie (Pickard) Finch. On Dec. 21, 1940, in Central Lake, she married Robert L. Vanniman. They made their home in Banks Township. Mr. Vanniman died in 2000. Lois was a member of Ellsworth Wesleyan Church. She was a homemaker who especially enjoyed quilting, crocheting, gardening and "blackberrying." Surviving are her children, Alan (Gladys) Vanniman and Laura (Larry) Essenberg, all of Ellsworth, Jack (Nancy) Vanniman of Central Lake, and Cindy (Don) Samson of Williamsburg; a sister, Erma (Bill) Best of Bangor, Wis.; two brothers, George (Alma) Finch of Central Lake and Francis (Linda) Finch of Traverse City; 11 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Lois was preceded in death by three sisters, Ione Hart, Tressie Brace and Marjorie Paige; three brothers, Elgy, Lloyd and Herbert Finch; and daughter-in-law, Sonia Vanniman. Friends may call at Hastings Funeral Home in Ellsworth on Monday, Oct. 13, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ellsworth Wesleyan Church, with the Rev. BETTY ELIZABETH FAST, 76, of Waterford, formerly of Honor, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, in Oxford. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. Interment will be in Platte Township Cemetery. 'CY' GRANA, 89, of Bellaire, died Friday, Oct. 10, 2003, at his daughter's home. A private family service will be held at a later date. Interment will take place in Eldred Cemetery, Kearney Township. MORGAN ELIZABETH YOUNG, newborn daughter of Regina Rodriguez and Michael Young of Flint, formerly of Bellaire, died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2003, at University of Michigan Hospital, Ann Arbor. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13, at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, where friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of services.
