Obituaries

BEULAH - Marion K. MacInnes, 92, of Beulah, died Thursday, July 3, 2003, at her home.
She was born on October 19, 1910, in Marlboro, Mass., the daughter of William Webster and Isabella Grant.
She grew up in Saxonville, Mass., at the Webster home on Cottage St. and graduated from Framingham High School in 1928. She then graduated from the New England Deaconess Hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1935. She later joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps and advanced to the rank of first lieutenant.
In 1942 she was one of the first American nurses to go overseas in World War II, landing in the first convoy to New Caledonia. While serving in the Pacific Theater she earned the Asian-Pacific Campaign Medal, American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
In 1948 she married a Canadian, John Norman MacInnes, whom she met while visiting Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia, and in October of 1949 they had a son, James Donald MacInnes.
In 1952 the family moved to southern California where Marion worked as a surgical floor and emergency room nurse at the Santa Ana Community Hospital until her retirement in the early 1970s. After a six-year residence in St. Albans, Maine, Marion returned to Dana Point, Calif., where she lived until 1985. She then moved to Beulah, along with her son and daughter-in-law, Chris Petritz MacInnes.
During her years in Beulah, she made many friends, was an avid gardener and became one of the founding members of the St. Andrews Presbyterian Church. She described her life there as some of her best times.
She is survived by her son, Jim MacInnes, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Norman MacInnes; her brothers, Daniel, Gordon and Grant Webster; and sisters, Nancy Alexander and Helen Bridges.
A burial service was held on Saturday, Sept. 27, and she was laid to rest alongside her husband at the MacDonald Cemetery in Breton Cove, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia.
A memorial service will be held at the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church in Beulah on Oct. 19 at 12:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Foundation, 224 Park St., Frankfort, MI 49635.
Marion was a wonderful woman who spent her life helping others. We loved her very much and she will always be in our hearts.

GRAYLING - Charles Vajda, 83, of Grayling, passed away Saturday, Oct. 11, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by his loving wife, sons and family members.
Born Jan. 12, 1920, to Charles and Justina (Heannda) Vajda. Charles married Elizabeth Tholl Jan. 27, 1942. In the eyes of their sons, Charles and Elizabeth's marriage was a true love story. As Charles said to Elizabeth during his last days with us, "you are my best friend."
Charles and Elizabeth have been very proud of the six boys they brought in to the world, Charles William "Bill" Vajda of Howard City, Cary (Sally) Vajda of Midland, Gary (Marlene) Vajda of Bellaire, David (Barbara) Vajda of Mt. Pleasant, Thomas (Julie McIntyre) Vajda of Jackson Hole, Wy., and Matthew (Judy) Vajda of Traverse City.
Also surviving Charles are his wife, his sons and nine grandchildren, Michelle, Greg, Emily, Nathan, Neil, Kris, Joshua, Jonathan and Katherine; sisters, Mary Milner of Roscommon, Esther Hansen of Livonia and Rose Fowler of Livonia; and many nieces and nephews.
Charles was preceded in death by his parents; and sisters, Helen Tokar and Lydia Dodds.
Charlie's Christian faith wasn't hidden and was an inspiration to all. He and Elizabeth attended Mount Hope Lutheran Church in Grayling for the past 48 years. Many of us have thoughts in our hearts but are unable to express those thoughts, but not Charlie! He openly expressed his love in words and actions to everyone in his life. His great sense of humor brought smiles and laughter to all who knew him.
Charlie was a jack-of-all-trades and a Master of Electrical. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 498 for over 50 years, where he served on the apprentice committee and the executive board in many capacities.
Charlie served three years in the U.S. Navy during World War II and belonged to the American Legion Post #106.
He was an avid golfer and belonged to the Grayling Country Club and the Monday night church league. Despite Charlie's suffering from shortness of breath in recent years, his friends would still call him for a game of golf and help him in any way they could. His lifelong golf partner was Carl Neilson. Another enjoyable activity for Charlie was fishing. Some speculated that Charlie wanted to die with either a golf club or a fishing rod in his hands.
At Charlie's request, cremation has taken place and a celebration of life service will take place at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15, at Mount Hope Lutheran Church, 905 N. I-75 business loop, in Grayling.
Arrangements have been provided by Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel.

TRAVERSE CITY - Ava Rose Given, infant daughter of William Arthur and Kylee Rose (Norton) Given, was stillborn Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

Services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Oct. 15, with the Rev. Charles Towersey officiating. Graveside services will be at Fairview Cemetery in Manistique on Thursday, Oct. 16, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Jay Martin officiating.
