Obituaries

      HONOR - Anna Margaret Smith, 88, of Honor, passed peacefully into the presence of her Lord and Savior Saturday, Oct. 18, at The Homesteader in Benzonia.
      Margaret, as she was known, was born Dec. 2, 1914, in Honor, to Frank and Florence (Hawkins) Brown. On Sept. 12, 1933, she married John H. Smith.
      Margaret and John lived their entire lives in Honor until their retirement, when they moved to Florida. They were members of the Honor Congregational Church.
      After John's death in 1998, Margaret became a resident of The Homesteader. She was lovingly cared for by Kate Loney and her staff, who became a second family to Margaret.
      Margaret is survived by three daughters, Agnes (Melvin) Cross of Honor, Joan Sikorski of Holland and Carolyn (Kenneth) Gallo of Williamsburg; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; 13 step-great-grandchildren; and one step-great-great-grandchild.
      In addition to her husband, Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; and an infant granddaughter, Deborah Esch.
      Cremation has taken place and private family graveside services will be held at a later date at Homestead Township Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Honor Congregational Church in Honor.
      The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah is in charge of arrangements.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Louise M. Labyak, 95, formerly of Ontonagon, died Thursday, Oct. 16, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
      She was born in Ontonagon on May 16, 1908, to the late Charles and Elizabeth Peltier. On Nov. 16, 1933, she married the late Harold S. Labyak. He preceded her in death in 1980.
      Louise had been a schoolteacher at the Old Cranberry Schoolhouse. She was a member of the Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon.
      Louise is survived by her children, Dawn Labyak Willman of Traverse City, John (Nancy) Labyak of Ontonagon and Charles (Janet) Labyak of Seattle, Wash.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Eleanor Lembert, Dorothy Slough and Betty Keane.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers and one sister.
      A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, Oct. 20, at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Ontonagon. Burial was in the Holy Family Cemetery in Ontonagon.
      Arrangements were provided by Cane Funeral Home, Ontonagon.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Jack W. Farthing, 85, of Traverse City, died Friday, Oct. 17, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Born May 16, 1918, in Saginaw, he was the son of Roland and Ora (Hepinstal) Farthing. Jack married Joyce Fude, who preceded him in death. He then married Ruth Kile. Jack later married Joyce White, who also preceded him in death.
      Jack served his country honorably in the United States Army during World War II. He had been employed as a construction supervisor for Michigan Bell, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
      Survivors include his children, James (Patricia) Farthing of Cedar River, Jack Farthing, Debra Rembish, Greg Farthing and Peggy Walters, all of Saginaw.
      Services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City today at 3 p.m., where friends may call from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Dr. Richard Ayling will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Shirley M. Dost, 78, passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, at her home in Traverse City.
      Born July 8, 1925, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Frank "Bernie" and Sarah (Baker) Forton.
      Upon graduating from Traverse City High School, Shirley moved to Detroit, working at Providence Hospital several years. She returned to Traverse City, where she met her beloved husband, John, after World War II. They were married July 9, 1949, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City.
      Shirley sang in the Grand Traverse Chorale, was a volunteer and member of the Encore Society of Music in Traverse City, and for many years had been a member of the Immaculate Conception Church choir.
      She was very generous in giving to family and friends, including baking cookies for Christmas, making treats for gifts and crocheting afghans. She also found pleasure in times of fellowship, going out to dinner with her family and friends.
      Visiting with her grandchildren brought Shirley hours of pleasure. She enjoyed games and jigsaw puzzles with friends, loved classical music, was an avid reader and enjoyed flower gardening. After her husband retired, they traveled around the country. She especially liked to visit Florida and her sister, Joyce, in California.
      Shirley is survived by six children, Stephanie Lyn (Brian) Barnhizer of Erie, Pa., John Paul (Lori) of Jenison, Kurt (Sharon) of Haslett, Mark (Cheryl) of Beulah, Michael (Susan) of Traverse City and Suzanne (Kyle) Smoes of Rockford; 10 grandchildren, Krista, Stephanie, Sarah, Aaron, Collin, Andrew and Benjamin Dost, Eric, Brook and Jackie Smoes; two sisters, Wilma (Jack) McClure of Pinckney and Joyce Schall of Coronado, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, John R.; her sister, Jackie Hamlin; and a brother, Harold Forton.
      A gathering of family and friends will be held for a celebration of Shirley's life Saturday, Oct. 25, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Traverse City Senior Center, 801 E. Front St.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Encore Society of Music, 821 Hastings St., Traverse City, MI 49686.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

      NEWBERRY - Lula Mae (Morrison) Manville, 78, passed away Friday, Oct. 17, at her residence, surrounded by her loving family.
      Lula Mae was born July 23, 1925, in Munising. She married Louis James (Buck) on Aug. 29, 1942.
      Surviving Lula Mae are her loving husband, Louis James (Buck) of Newberry; her children, Jim (Kathy) Manville of McMillan, Polly (Dennis) Huffman of Newberry, Patty (Herb) Ames of Sault Ste. Marie, Dan (Amy) Manville of Ferndale, Jack (Cindi) Manville of Sault Ste. Marie, and David (Terry) Manville of South Lyon; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren; her brother, Buster; and several nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Otto, Norman, Frances and Everett; and her sister, Tudy.
      In accordance with Lula Mae's wishes, she will be cremated and no services will be planned.
      The family wishes to thank Dr. Gill, LMAS Hospice and friends for their support and services.
      In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to LMAS Hospice or the charity of one's choice.

      ISHPEMING - John Keith Lodholz, 81, of Ishpeming, passed away Monday, Oct. 20, at the Bell Memorial Hospital with his loving family at his side.
      Keith was born July 28, 1922, in Munising, to the late Walter and Ella (Saul) Lodholz.
      Keith graduated from Negaunee High School, class of 1940, and started working in the mines shortly thereafter. He worked for more than 40 years for Cleveland-Cliffs Iron Mining Company, mostly at the Republic Mine, retiring in 1984 from the Tilden Mine. He was a devoted member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming.
      Keith loved following his daughters, son-in-law, Dan, and his five grandchildren in their sporting events, band performances, drama and academics. Special times were spent with his wife and daughter Susan, taking drives, eating out and attending many of the sports events.
      He enjoyed spending time at Shag Lake and the hunting camp with his family, sons-in-law and family friend Chuck Lanctot. He also was involved with the Ishpeming Blue Notes when his daughters Nancy and Carol were members, was once an avid bowler and is a past member of the Pioneer Kiwanis of Ishpeming.
      Keith always enjoyed sports and, when not watching as a fan, he usually was listening to the radio and watching his favorite teams on television, both at the same time.
      Keith is survived by his wife Frances (DeCaire) Lodholz, whom he married Aug. 11, 1945, and was always by his side; three daughters, Susan M. Lodholz of Ishpeming, Nancy K. (Lou) Ghiringhelli of Elk Rapids and Carol J. (Dan) Kurian of Ishpeming; five grandchildren, Lisa Ann (Robert) Smith of Denver, Colo., Sarah Ghiringhelli of Traverse City, Josh Ghiringhelli of Elk Rapids and Madison, Wis., Chad Kurian and Alex Kurian of Ishpeming; a sister, Eileen (Don) Hines of Winston Salem, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Alice Lodholz of Maple Valley, Wash.; along with several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Ella Lodholz; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Leo "Pete" and Mae DeCaire; a sister and brother-in-law, Geraldine (Pete) Peterson; and a brother, Royce Lodholz.
      A memorial Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming with the Rev. Fr. James Challancin officiating. The family will greet friends and relatives from 9 a.m. until the time of service on Friday at the church, with a luncheon to follow in the church hall.
      In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to organizations selected by each of the grandchildren. Information will be available at the funeral home and the church.
      The Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

      DOROTHY BECKER, 91, passed away Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at The Maples in Frankfort.
      Services are pending at Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Home in Midland.
      Local arrangements were handled by the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes.
     
      JAMES W. 'MIKE' COCHRAN, 75, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Traverse City, died Oct. 5, 2003.
      Graveside services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
     
      CAROLYN SIETING HUNDEY, 61, of Vestaburg, died Thursday, Oct. 16, 2003.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the St. Louis Church of Christ in St. Louis, Mich.
     
      ROBERT 'BOB' MORRIS, 67, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at his home in Kalkaska.
      Visitation will take place Wednesday, Oct. 22, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Kalkaska Church of Christ. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

      Ethel L. Arnold
      Died October 19, 2003
      FRANKFORT - Ethel L. Arnold, age 88, died Sunday, Oct. 19, at Frankfort Senior Care Facility.
      She was born Sept. 24, 1915, in Mears, to Herbert and Bessie (Bevens) Hunter. She married James E. Arnold in Angola, Ind., on July 3, 1954, and he preceded her in death on Nov. 28, 1999.
      Mrs. Arnold was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Frankfort and was employed as a hairdresser until retiring. She survived by her granddaughter, Colleen J. (Pat) Haran of Chicago.
      The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Lee Funeral Home in Muskegon Heights, with the Rev. Dennis J. Stroh officiating. Interment will be in Norton Cemetery. Friends may meet with the family beginning one hour prior to the service.
