Obituaries

      GEORGIA F. SCOTT, 86, of Northport, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      Arrangements are pending at Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay.
     
      ALICE MARIE WILCOX, 83, of Cadillac, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Lakeview Lutheran Manor in Cadillac.
      Cremation will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee. Arrangements are by Oak Grove Cremation Center.
     
      EDITH D. BURDA, 83, of Grawn, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at her home.
      Arrangements are pending at Covell Funeral Homes, Traverse City.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Louis Cyril Bryck, passed away Sunday, Oct. 19, 2003, at home.
      He was born in Detroit on Dec. 26, 1930, to Cyril and Agnes (Arkin) Bryck, and married Laverne Junek in 1951.
      Louis was a tool and die maker and owned and operated Grandview Tool and Die in Traverse City.
      He is survived by his wife, Laverne; sisters, Char Jaratz and Nancy LaPorte; a brother, Richard Bryck; his children, Thomas (and wife Rose) Bryck, Robert (and wife Sandra) Bryck, Tracy (and husband Charles) Johnson; three granddaughters, six great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews.
      Preceding Louis in death were his parents and his son, David Bryck.
      Cremation has taken place. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      Following the services, friends may join the family at 525 Fifth St. to share memories and pay their respects.

      ZANESVILLE, Ohio - Dolores Ann "Dee" Wilson, 69, of Nashport, Ohio, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003, at Genesis Good Samaritan Hospital. She was born Sept. 21, 1934, in Zanesville, a daughter of the late Harold C. and Sara E. Davis Dovenbarger.
      Dee worked as a telephone operator for Ohio Bell and as a receptionist for White's Chevrolet and Zanesville Chevrolet. She was a Presbyterian by faith. Dee enjoyed golfing and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandson.
      Survivors include Dee's loving husband of 49 years, Richard K. Wilson, whom she married Nov. 8, 1953; two daughters, Holly (Patrick) Norris of Zanesville and Heidi Lynn Mason of Miami, Fla.; two sons, Richard (June) Wilson and Robert (Natalie) Wilson, both of Kingsley; eight grandchildren; Jeremy and Jessy Norris, Heather and Richard Wilson, Chase and Robert Wilson, and Ryan and Josh Boyden; a great-grandson, Tyler Wilson; and a brother, Kenneth R. (Mary Lou) Dovenbarger of Walhounding.
      In addition to her parents, Dee was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

      LAKE CITY, Fla. - Velda Carlson, 74, of Lake City, Fla., passed away at her home Sept. 25, 2003.
      A native of Traverse City, she was very active in the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary in Traverse City, Petoskey and Florida.
      Velda is survived by her husband, Edward Carlson of Florida; children, Ralph Starek, Charlene Hancz and Cheryl (Jeff) Thomas of Michigan, Juanita (Tom) Kennedy and Tammy (David) Sommerfield of Florida; stepson, Mark (Jennifer) Carlson of Indiana; brother, Roy Morse of Traverse City; two sisters, Irene Riskey of Traverse City and Jean Nicholson of California; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
      Services were held at Gateway Memorial Funeral Home of Lake City. The Rev. Robert Maltzban of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, where Velda was an active member, officiated. Military honor services with interment in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla., followed.

      KALKASKA - Robert L. Morris, lifelong resident of Kalkaska, passed away at his home on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2003.
      Bob was one of nine children born to John and Opal (Lense) Morris on May 22, 1936. He attended school in Kalkaska and graduated in 1954.
      After working 20 years for a pipeline distribution company, Bob started his own company with the help of his sons. It prospered and provided many jobs for area residents. Today, R.L. Morris & Son's Construction Co. is in its third decade providing employment under the ownership of his son.
      Bob looked forward to his daily coffee and conversation with his many friends. He was an avid deer hunter and enjoyed "occasional" trips to a casino. The lives of so many were touched by Bob. Those who were fortunate enough to know Bob well will always remember his extra sharp wit and his "gigantic" heart. His generosity was immeasurable.
      Bob was preceded in death by his father and mother; and by his sisters, Thelma Thomas, Vera Roote and Wilma Adkins.
      Surviving are his children, Greg (Jo) Morris of Williamsburg, Rory Morris of Kalkaska and Cindi Morris of Wichita, Kansas; his grandchildren, Megan, Tyler and Kwin Morris of Williamsburg, and Haley Morris of Garden City; his brothers, Glen and Harold of Kalkaska; his sisters, Edith Dusten and Doris McLean of Kalkaska, and Marilyn Strong of Eastport.
      Visitation will be today, Oct. 22, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Wolfe Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Kalkaska Church of Christ, with Dan Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
      Memorials may be given in behalf of Bob to North County Hospice, 301 S. Cedar, Kalkaska, MI 49646; or the Kaliseum Recreation Complex, 1900 Fairgrounds Rd., Kalkaska, MI 49646.
      Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.

      BATTLE CREEK - Warren H. Poertner, 82, of Battle Creek, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at North Pointe Woods.
      He was born March 17, 1921, in Suttons Bay, to Henry and Gertrude (Bremer) Poertner. He was raised in the Traverse City and Leelanau Peninsula areas and graduated from Leland High School.
      During World War II, Warren served in the South Pacific and Philippines with the U.S. Army, Infantry Division, from 1942 to 1945. In 1946, he moved to Battle Creek to work at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he was employed until retiring in 1977 as chief of building management.
      Warren married June I. Coleman, in Leland, on Jan. 12, 1946. June preceded him in death on July 8, 1994.
      Surviving are three daughters, Beverly J. Meyers of Athens, Bonnie L. Villari of Cleveland, Ohio, Barbara A. (Gary) Brown of Battle Creek; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; a sister, Doris McCloskey of Traverse City, a brother, Maynard (Peg) Poertner of Ann Arbor; and special friend, Gladys Robertson of Battle Creek.
      Warren was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and a member of American Legion Post 298, where he called bingo for years. He also called bingo for the Lakeview Boosters Club. He was an avid golfer and played in the Cedar Creek leagues.
      At the request of the family, friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, Battle Creek, where the family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
      Funeral services will be officiated by the Rev. Patricia Mohr-Kelly at 12:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at the funeral home. Military honors and interment will follow in Fort Custer National Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Lifespan Hospice for the hospice residence building fund, or to St. Peter Lutheran Church.
