TANNEHILL, 85, of Mancelona, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at his home. Visitation will be Friday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the funeral home. MARY M. WILLIAMS, of Manistee, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, in Manistee. Visitation will take place today, Oct. 23, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, with evening prayers at 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Burial will immediately follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Manistee. JAMIE K. WOODS, 50, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at Munson Medical Center. Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City. BEULAH - Darlene J. Bates passed away Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Munson Medical Center. Darlene was born Jan. 18, 1934, the daughter of Elmer and Bertha (Milks) Matthews. She graduated from Bear Lake High School as valedictorian in 1950. Darlene then attended Ferris State University, receiving an associate's degree in secretarial sciences. Upon graduation, Darlene worked for Dow Corning in Midland. On Nov. 28, 1957, she married Morley "Jim" Bates. After living in California, and a short time in Mount Clemens, they made their home in Beulah. Darlene was actively involved in church work, holding offices in the local church as well as on the district level. She was also active with the Benzie Area Historical Society, a member since its inception 30 years ago, she served as president for two years. She also served with the Red Cross, Benzie United Way, and Habitat for Humanity. Darlene was the first female District Court Magistrate, serving from 1973 until her retirement in 1987. During that time, she became president of the Michigan Magistrate Association, and a teacher-advisor for the National Judges College in Reno, Nev. She was also executive director of the National Judges Association for non-lawyer judges. After being diagnosed with cancer in 1991, Darlene decreased her activities, but continued her involvement to the extent that she could. Darlene is survived by her husband, Jim; son, Matt (Lisa) Bates; grandsons, Ryan and Dylan; sister, Elsie (Bill) Monk; brother, Roland (Janet) Matthews; and numerous special nieces and nephews. Visitation will be at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes Friday, Oct. 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Frankfort United Methodist Church. Memorials may be given to the Frankfort United Methodist Church or the Benzie Area Historical Society. THOMPSONVILLE - Richard Paul Merskin, 79, of Thompsonville, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Paul Oliver Long Term Care in Frankfort. He was born Aug. 25, 1924, in Chicago, the son of Clarence and Jenny (Stepanek) Merskin. Richard was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy, where he earned the Purple Heart. He was a member of the American Legion Read-Osborne Post #531 in Copemish. Richard had been a mail carrier in Thompsonville for the U.S. Postal Service from 1962 until his retirement in 1988. In his spare time, Richard enjoyed fishing, traveling and camping. Richard is survived by his son, Richard (Rosa) Merskin Jr. of Thompsonville; his daughter, Eileen (Richard) Pulido of Thompsonville; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one brother, Clarence (Nancy) Merskin of Sun City, Fla. On August 5, 1949, in Copemish, Richard married Alice Julia Zezulka, who preceded him in death in 1996. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Donald Merskin, in 2003. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva, with visitation from 11 a.m. until time of services at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Springdale Township Cemetery, with military services conducted under the auspices of the American Legion Read-Osborne Post #531. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army in Manistee. Envelopes are available at the Terwilliger Funeral Home. NORTHPORT - Georgia Freida Scott, 86, of Northport, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Georgia was born June 23, 1917, in Northport, the daughter of George and Ruth (Johnson) Peterson. She married Elliott Scott in LeRoy Sept. 25, 1937. He preceded her in death in 1977. A homemaker, Georgia was a very kind and gentle spirit. She liked to read and to cook, and will always be fondly remembered for her cinnamon rolls. She was very active at Northport Evangelical Covenant Church, where she was a lifetime member. Georgia is survived by her children, Marvin (Nancy) Scott of Traverse City, Clarence (Nancy) Scott of Grand Rapids, Linda (Galen) Leighton of Northport, David (Lou) Scott of Traverse City, John (Brenda) Scott of Northport, Karla (Dale) Schaub of Lake Leelanau, and Rhonda Scott; 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren; her sister, Marilyn (Martin) Alkema of Cedar Springs; and brothers, Norman (Bonnie) Peterson of Traverse City and Rueben (Charlotte) Peterson of Memphis, Tenn. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Craig; brother, David; and sister, Ruth Ann. Visitation will take place this evening, Oct. 23, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 24, at Northport Evangelical Covenant Church, with Rev. Rick Miller officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be in Leelanau Township Cemetery, Northport. Memorial contributions may be made to the Northport Evangelical Church Building Fund. Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay, is in charge of arrangements. SAN FRANCISCO - Gerald W. "Jerry" Wyckoff, 76, of San Francisco, succumbed to cancer Saturday, Oct. 18, 2003, at Kaiser Permanente Hospital, San Francisco. Born May 10, 1927, in Lansing, he was the son of Norval and Opal (Halladay) Wyckoff. Jerry was raised in Mayfield and graduated from Kingsley High School. In 1940, he was named the "outstanding 8th-grade student" in Grand Traverse County. Jerry served as radioman in the U.S. Coast Guard in World War II, then attended Michigan State College. He finished his bachelor's degree at Mexico City College and later earned a teaching certificate at San Francisco College. Jerry taught high school languages for 30 years in the Sacramento and Hayward (California) school systems. He enjoyed world travel, opera, card games, and was an avid bowler. He especially enjoyed returning to Traverse City every June to see former classmates, friends and relatives at the annual Mayfield picnic. Jerry is survived by his brother, Dr. Kenneth (Nancy) Wyckoff of Traverse City, and several loving cousins, nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. Preceding Jerry in death were his parents; a sister, Ruth Clark Bailey; and a brother, James D. At the request of the deceased, cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society, or the Mayfield Historical Collection at the Grand Traverse Pioneer & Historical Society in Traverse City.
