October 24, 2003ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Alexander A. Schettek, 82, of Traverse City, died at his home Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003.Alex was born May 18, 1921, in Maple City, the son of John and Helen (Osie) Schettek. Alex resided in Maple City until moving to Traverse City in 1950. He married Irene (Popa) Schettek Sept. 4, 1948, in Cedar. Alex retired from Max's Service after 25 years of employment. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre, where he took part in the Normandy, northern France and Rhineland campaigns. After being wounded in the Rhineland campaign, he received the Purple Heart accommodation. He was a member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart of Traverse City. As a member of St. Francis parish, Alex served as usher for many years. He enjoyed the outdoors, and his favorite pastimes included hunting and cutting and selling wood. Alex is survived by his wife, Irene of Traverse City; two children, Janet (Skip) Brown of Traverse City and Nancy (Rocky) Welch of Maple City; five granddaughters, Sara (Andy) Bogard, Carrie Brown, and Cori, Amanda and Angilee Welch; one brother, Paul Schettek of Maple City; three sisters, Josephine Lewis, Genevieve Peplinski and Mary Ellen Novak, all of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; three sisters, Tillie Schettek in infancy, Veronica Levenske and Lillian Peplinski; and two infant brothers, John and Clemence. Visitation will take place at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes Sunday, Oct. 26, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 3 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at St. Francis Catholic Church, with Rev. Patrick Maher officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens, with full military honors being performed by the Cherryland VFW Post #2780 of Traverse City. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Francis Catholic Church, Mass Intentions, Freedom Builders Missions or the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging, through Covell Funeral Homes of Traverse City. YPSILANTI - Grace B. Spires, 81, of Ypsilanti, died Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, at her home. She was born April 26, 1922, in Gladstone, the daughter of John and Agnus (Hoodskey) Wiltzus. She was a wonderful homemaker who enjoyed quilting, baking, cooking Sunday dinners, making dolls and going to garage sales. On Aug. 18, 1939, she married Harold Spires, who preceded her in death on Jan. 24, 1997. Also preceding her in death were two sons, Archie and Lloyd Spires, as well as her parents. Surviving are her children, Ivan (Joyce) Spires of Belleville, Butch (Sue Ellen) Spires of Louisa, Ky., Dan (Sherry) Spires of Ypsilanti, Bobbie (Doug) Hatfield of Ypsilanti, Carol Spires of Belleville and Candy (Jack) Shepard of Utica. Also surviving are two daughters-in-law, Bonnie Spires of Mancelona, Roxanne Spires of Missouri; 18 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Visitation will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. today, Oct. 24, at the Janowiak Funeral Home, Geer-Logan Chapel in Ypsilanti. Visitation also will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona. TRAVERSE CITY - Jamie Karen LaFranier Woods, since she knew her Lord Jesus personally, has been welcomed by Him into Heaven. Jamie was born in Traverse City on Jan. 31, 1953, and left her earthly body on Oct. 22, 2003. A graduate of Traverse City Senior High School, Jamie attended Northwestern Michigan College for two years, having studied in the art department. Jamie, having a servant's heart, was very involved with Traverse City Christian School, where she helped in any way she could. Jamie was very devoted to her family, her parents and her siblings and was always available when needed. Her dependability was unquestionable. She loved life and made life fun. Jamie's love of life continues through her organ donations through Gift of Life. She loved her puppy, Biskit, and loved creating art work. She is survived by her husband, Rick, whom she married Nov. 26, 1983, in Traverse City; her daughter, Jenelle May Woods; her mother, Marvel Spencer LaFranier of Traverse City; her brother, Louis B. (Sharon) LaFranier of Traverse City; her sisters, Dixie Lynn (Timothy, deceased) Roethlisberger of Evart and Jana Ellen (Rev. Douglas) Hanback of Ripon, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and great-nephews. Jamie was preceded in death by her father, Louis G. LaFranier, on Aug. 18, 2003; and her grandparents, Jacob and Nora (Morse) Spencer and Adolph and Karin (Ahlberg) LaFranier. Visitation will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home this evening, Oct. 24, from 5 until 8 p.m. Services celebrating Jamie's life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 25, at Immanuel Baptist Church, 1027 McRae Hill Road, Traverse City, with The Rev. William Geisel officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations in Jamie's name be made to Traverse City Christian School, 753 Emerson Rd., Traverse City, MI 49686. UNION, KY - Shirley J. (McClelland) Mann, 57, of Union, Ky., died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, Ky. She was employed as a teacher at New Haven Elementary School and served as an elder at Union Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Mann held a bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and a master's degree from Northern Kentucky University, as well as national board certification. She is survived by her husband, Jeff Mann and her daughter, Sarah Mann of Union; as well as three sons, Scott (Vanessa) Mann of Burlington, Ky., Mike Mann of Florence, Ky., and Brian Mann of Lexington, Ky. She also is survived by a sister, Nancy (George) Mitchell of Kingsley and an aunt, Dagny Sharp of Tucson, Ariz.; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be held from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 27, at Union Presbyterian Church. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28 at the church. A special memorial service will be offered at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at New Haven Elementary School. Burial will be in Rice Cemetery, Union, Ky. The family is being assisted by Stith Funeral Home, Inc., Florence, Ky. TRAVERSE CITY - Arnol H. Merrill, 64, of Traverse City, formerly of Benzie County, died Wednesday evening at his home. Arnol was born Feb. 25, 1939, in Benzie County, the son of Herbert and Edna (Moore) Merrill. In July of 1981, he married Peggy Osborne, who survives. Arnol served with the U.S. Army, receiving an honorable discharge. He was employed at General Motors in Flint for 30 years, retiring as a body assembler in 1993. Arnol was a trail guide for horseback riders and the past eight years was a trail guide for Rocking "R" Stables in Bear Lake. He was also a former bus driver for Interlochen Arts Academy and a substitute bus driver for Benzie County Central Schools. In addition to his wife, Peggy Merrill, Arnol is survived by two daughters, Tracie (Rick) Witkop of Bendon and Stacey (Craig) Becker of Traverse City; two stepsons, Christopher (Sharon) Scott and Casey (Laura) Scott, both of Traverse City; and 11 grandchildren, Lee, Brandon, Joshua, Taylor, Zane, Finn, Gage, Dakota, Daniel, Bree and Austin; his mother, Edna Merrill; a brother and a sister. Friends may call Saturday, Oct. 25, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the funeral home, with Rev. OLIVE McGILLIVRAY, 89, of Manistee, died Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at Tendercare of Manistee. Memorial funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 1, at the Johnson Funeral Home, 480 Water St., Manistee. JAMES E. STEIN, 81, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at Tendercare of Traverse City.
