Obituaries

      DORIS LOUISE COOPER, 88, of Beulah, formerly of Flushing, died Friday, Oct. 24, 2003, at her residence. She was born Dec. 1, 1914, in Flint.
      Private family graveside services will be held at Sunset Hills Cemetery in Flint.
      The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah is in charge of arrangements.
     
      CLAUDE DUANE FORRESTER, 76, of Thompsonville, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, with Pastor Timothy Brand officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until the time of services on Sunday at the funeral home.
      A full obituary will be in the Sunday edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle. The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
     
      POSEN - Carol Barker, 57, died on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2003, in Posen.
      She was a resident of Posen and previously of Traverse City.
      She is survived by a sister, Colleen (Don) Adams of Traverse City.
      Cremation has taken place and no services are planned at this time.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      GRAWN - Alfred H. Micham, 84, of Grawn, died on Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      Alfred was a lifelong resident of the Traverse City area. He was born on Aug. 25, 1919, in Bingham, the son of Arthur and Katie S. (Dunning) Micham. On Nov. 8, 1947, in Lake Leelanau, he married the former Patricia J. Maleski, who preceded him in death.
      Alfred retired from Cone Drive Gear in Traverse City and was formerly employed by the Ann Arbor Car Ferry, DT & I Railroad out of Frankfort and Elberta. He was one of the first Grand Traverse County dog catchers and was involved in spearheading the Cherryland Humane Society.
      Alfred loved animals. He raised pigeons and also raised, trained and ran sled dogs. He won several trophies for his accomplishments. He also was an avid hunter.
      Alfred was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard.
      Alfred is survived by his daughter, Paula (Jerry) Olman of Grawn; eight grandchildren, Jody (Jeff) Higgins, May (Trever) Cross, Danielle Brosch, Gary Milbert Jr., Teresa (Larry) Strunk, Kathy Mroz, Kelly Olman, and Brandi (Tom) Kelly; 13 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Micky Bishop.
      He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Patricia Micham, on Dec. 27, 2002; two sons, Arthur Micham and Chester Micham; two brothers; and two sisters.
      Graveside services with full military honors will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery in Traverse City.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - James E. Stein, 81, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003, at Tendercare of Traverse City.
      Born May 18, 1922, in Detroit, he was the son of Henry and Irma (Shulte) Stein.
      On March 15, 1945, in San Diego, Calif., he married the former Barbara Nixon.
      Formerly of Manistee River, and Romeo, Mr. Stein had been a resident of the Traverse City area for five years and wintered in Hudson and Weeki Wachee, Fla.
      While living in Romeo, Mr. Stein and his wife Barbara raised 10 children.
      He served his country honorably in the Naval Air Corps for four years in San Diego, Calif.
      Mr. Stein had been employed as a graphic engineer in production engineering for General Motors Fisher Body Division for 25 years, retiring in 1980.
      He was active in reenactment of pre-1840 mountain men and volunteered with the Boy Scouts as a Scoutmaster.
      His many memberships included the auxiliary police in Romeo, the Power Squadron, Florida Frontiersmen, Benzie Sportsman's Club, National Maritime Historical Society, Smithsonian Institution, National Muzzle Loaders, National Rifle Association, PERC Club GM Retirees, Sacred Heart Church in Mancelona and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Armada, where he served as an usher and sang in the church choir.
      Mr. Stein enjoyed sailing, muzzle loading, bow hunting, fishing, canoeing, R.C. planes, woodcarving, painting, farming, ham radio and model railroading.
      Mr. Stein is survived by his wife, Barbara, and their children, James H. (Barbara) Stein of Ortonville, Peter (Susan) Stein of Wake Forest, N.C., Carol (Ron) Schmidt of Oscoda, Joan (Phil) Cole of Charlotte, N.C., David (Jill) Stein of Royal Oak, Christopher (Mary Beth) Stein of Traverse City, Donald (Joanne) Stein of Almont, Douglas (Mary) Stein of Oxford, Jeanette Stein Almas of Livonia, and Matthew (Andrea) Stein of St. Clair Shores; brothers, Carl (Nancy) Stein, Gerald (Lois) Stein, Paul (Dolores) Stein; sister, Marilyn (Stein) L'Heureux; and 24 grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bobby and Richard Stein; and grandson, Timothy Stein.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Sunday evening, Oct. 26, from 5 to 8 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
      Visitation will continue at the Henry M. Malburg Funeral Home, 11280 32 Mile Road, Romeo, Mich., on Monday, Oct. 27, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Oct. 28, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Richmond (Armada) at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Soos serving as celebrant.
      Burial will immediately follow the Mass in Romeo Cemetery.
