October 29, 2003ObituariesALDEN - Philip J. Walter, 77, of Alden, died at home unexpectedly Monday, Oct. 27, 2003.Born in Detroit Dec. 25, 1925, he was the son of Hans G. and Edith (Armstrong) Walter. He married the former Dorothy (Brown) Vickers in Mt. Clemens on Aug. 5, 1972. Phil graduated from high school in Eau Clair, Wis. He was discharged from the U.S. Navy, having served as a gunner on a PBY plane during World War II. He was called to service again during the Korean War, serving aboard the U.S.S. Antietam. Phil worked as an appliance serviceman for 35 years with the RCA factory out of Ferndale. He moved to Alden in 1986 from Mt. Clemens. Phil was a founding member of the Helena Township Historical Society, and was instrumental in the development of the Alden Depot Museum. He was also a 15-year member of the Wednesday Morning Senior Citizens Bowling League in Bellaire. Phil is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Alden; children, David (Barbara) Vickers of Indian River, Margaret (Roger) Jelsma of Rochester Hills, Cathy Vickers of Plymouth, Robert (Sheryl) Vickers of Mt. Clemens and Craig (Valerie) Vickers of Edgerton, Wis.; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may call at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes Friday, Oct. 31, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, at the funeral home, with the Rev. David L. Vickers of the Transfiguration Episcopal Church in Indian River officiating. Burial will be in Helena Twp. Cemetery, Alden. MAPLE CITY - Rose Ann Flaska, 87, of Maple City, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born in Chicago on Oct. 24, 1916, she was the daughter of John Joseph and Antoinette Pauline (Horak) Kurina. On Oct. 3, 1937, she married Tony Flaska in Maple City. He preceded her in death on Oct. 3, 1991. A homemaker, Rose enjoyed cooking and baking. She was a member of St. Rita parish in Maple City. Rose is survived by her daughter, Loraine Flaska of Maple City; two sons, Robert Flaska of Maple City and Don Flaska of Traverse City; her sister, Millie Drzewiecki of Maple City; and her brother, Tony Kurina of Maple City. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Ann and Agnes; and a brother, Joe. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 1, at St. Rita Catholic Church in Maple City, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. William Lipscomb will serve as celebrant. Burial will be in Cleveland Twp. Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Glen Arbor Rescue Squad or a charity of one's choice. SUTTONS BAY - James Milton "Jim" Carr, 70, of Suttons Bay, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Munson Medical Center, surrounded by his loving and caring family. Born Feb. 6, 1933, in Vassar, he was the son of Dorr Milton and Dorothy Louise (Schattilly) Carr. On Dec. 31, 1985, in Leland, he married the former Sally Jeanne Miller. Jim served his country honorably with the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict. He also served 28 years with the Michigan State Police, retiring as a sergeant in 1984, and was Leelanau County Undersheriff from 1984 to 1994. Jim was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jim is survived by his wife, Sally of Suttons Bay; a son, James Carr of Traverse City; a daughter, Judy (David) Fry of Kingsley; his mother, Dorothy L. Bates of Houghton Lake; and two stepsons, Tom Fleury, Jr. of East Lansing and Brad (Sara) Fleury of Fishers, Ind. He was preceded in death by his father. Memorial services will be held at the Suttons Bay Congregational Church on Friday, Oct. 31, 2003, at 1 p.m., where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Geraldine MacNeil and Capt. Tim Rod, Michigan State Police, 7th District Commander, will officiate. Cremation has taken place. In remembrance, memorials may be directed to the charity of one's choice. TUCSON, Ariz. - Louis Robert Janssen of Tucson, Ariz., formerly of Traverse City, died Oct. 25, 2003, of a heart attack in Tucson. He was born Oct. 15, 1947, in Tucson. On Oct. 22, 1966, in Traverse City, he married Nora Lee Wilson. They resided in Traverse City for 10 years. Louis was employed by Chet Swanson's, Cole Brothers and Purvis Brothers. In 1972, he was disabled due to an automobile accident and returned to Arizona in 1976. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Nora; a son, Robbie (Barb) Janssen and their three sons, Cody, Dakota and Shane; a daughter, Rhonda Janssen and her fiancé Charles House. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Theresa Janssen; and his sister, Fran, also of Tucson, who passed away Oct. 27, 2003. Their funeral services will be handled by Advantage Funeral Home in Tucson, Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003. INTERLOCHEN - Robert William Sheren, 75, of Interlochen, passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Robert was born in Buckley on May 11, 1928, the youngest child of Claude and Jessie (Hall) Sheren. On Jan. 31, 1948, in Grand Rapids, he married Rita Wurm, his wife of 55 years. Robert was employed at Parsons and Traverse City Area Public Schools. He loved his family, home, nature, the great outdoors and especially enjoyed going to the U.P. with his sons. Robert is survived by his wife, Rita Sheren of Interlochen; seven children, Janet (Blake Hayner) Sheren of Chicago, Jerry (Sue) Sheren of Traverse City, Robert A. (Nikki) Sheren of Interlochen, Diane (Richard) Smith of Traverse City, Tom (Irene) Sheren of Traverse City, Steve (Jeanne) Sheren of Grandville, and Joanne (Bob) Sika of Interlochen; 24 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Leona Hulett of Grand Rapids. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and four sisters. Visitation will take place this evening, Oct. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley, and Thursday, Oct. 30, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Gerald Micketti Friday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Hannah. Memorials may be directed to Carmelite Monastery or the Father Fred Foundation. SPRING LAKE - In the presence of her family members, the guardian angels ushered Marie Theresa (Midge) Byl of Spring Lake to her heavenly home Sunday afternoon. For 72 years she enjoyed a full and satisfying life. Midge was born in Tecumseh, Ontario, Canada, and moved to Spring Lake when she was 13 years old. She married Gary Byl, of Grand Haven, on Jan. 30, 1953. Midge and Gary spent most of their lives in the Spring Lake area, with a brief time in Aurora, Colo. They traveled throughout the country, enjoying time with children and grandchildren along the way. In addition to her favorite role as a homemaker, Midge enjoyed working with friends at E'Leet Estate Sales, Plantenga's Cleaners, and for Dr. Creason and Dr. Jordan. She was very active in the Spring Lake Presbyterian Church, Love Inc. Food Pantry, Women's Association and Deacons group. Other activities included American Legion Auxiliary, band and athletic parent booster at Spring Lake Schools, bowling for Fricano's Pizza for 25 years and countless community activities. Midge is survived by her best friend and husband of 50 years, Gary; sons Bruce (Mary) of Traverse City and Michael (Tracy) of Ridgefield, Conn.; daughters Michelle (Mike) Davis of Traverse City, Jeanne (Dave) Underwood of Reno, Nev., and Nancy (Fred) Darga of Spring Lake; sisters Jeanne (Charlie) Brogger of Coronado, Calif., and Bea (Bud) Kieft of Grand Rapids; brother Jim (Diane) Gignac of Grand Haven; 14 grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Midge was preceded in death by a son, John; parents, Cecilia and Larry Gignac; a sister, Pip Westrate; and a brother, Larry Gignac. A memorial service will be held Thursday, Oct. 30, at 11:30 a.m. at Spring Lake Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Daniel Anderson and Pastor Mike Davis officiating. Friends may meet the family at church one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Spring Lake Cemetery. FRANCKOWIAK, 74, of Manistee, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee. Visitation will take place today, Oct. 29, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, with evening prayer service at 8 p.m. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee. Burial will follow in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Manistee. The funeral Mass for RICHARD 'DICK' LAMBERT, who died Monday, Oct. 27, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 30, at St. Francis Catholic Church. Visitation will take place this evening, Oct. 28, from 6 until 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Floyd B. Rybicki Died October 27, 2003 THOMPSONVILLE - Floyd B. Rybicki, 72, of Thompsonville, died Monday, Oct. 27, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Muskegon. Floyd was born April 22, 1931, in Detroit, the son of Benedict P. and Eleanor (Kutney) Rybicki. He grew up in Detroit, where he graduated from high school. He was married to Joyce A. Karschnick, who preceded him in death in 1974. Floyd was a plant manager in the import/export division of Chrysler Corporation in Detroit for 26 years. He then worked for the University of Wyoming in the athletic department. In his free time, Floyd enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and was an avid sports fan. Surviving are two sons, Richard (Cathy) Rybicki of Ludington and Michael (Karen) Rybicki of Novi; three daughters, Cindy (John) VanLaeken of Warsaw, Ind., Mary Ellen (Dennis) Battistella of Newport and Elaine (Mike) Hardrick of Garden City; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandson. The family will receive friends at the Dorrell Funeral Home in Ludington Thursday, Oct. 30, from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Oct. 31, at the funeral home, with Father Ken Schichtel officiating. Interment will be in Thompsonville Cemetery. Those wishing to make an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the American Heart Association.
