Obituaries

      Services for MABEL RUSSELL, who passed away on Oct. 17, 2003, will be held at the First Congregational Church on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 4:30 p.m.
      Arrangements were handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.

      STANDISH - Robert E. 'Bob' Gloss, 80, of Standish, formerly of Bay City, died Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Mid-Michigan Regional Medical Center. He was born Oct. 10, 1923, in Chicago.
      Bob was a decorated World War II veteran, serving with the U.S. Navy as a gunner's mate second class on the destroyer U.S.S. Gatling (DD671). He received nine stars - Asiatic-Pacific, American Theatre, two stars - Philippine Liberation, a Navy Marine medal, Victory medal, a World War II Victory medal, an Asiatic-Pacific medal, and an American Area medal.
      Bob was a member of St. James Catholic Church, and the Knights of Columbus #414. He retired from Seagrams Co. after 13 years of service as a salesperson, and was an avid woodworker.
      He is survived by three children, Ron (Carolyn) Gloss of Traverse City, Kenneth (Daurie) Gloss of Bay City and Kristina Gloss of LaQuinta, Calif.; four grandchildren, Janelle and Callie Gloss of Traverse City, and Harrison and Spencer Gloss of Bay City; a brother, Milton (Bernice) Gloss of Redding, Calif.; a sister, Betty (Charles) LeMay of Essexville; numerous nieces and nephews; and his special friend, Clara Zaharoff of Standish.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Irene, in 1982; and a sister, Irene Londry.
      Friends may call today, Oct. 30, at the Gephart Funeral Home Inc. in Bay City from 1 to 8 p.m., where a parish vigil service will be held at 7 p.m., followed by a Bible presentation from the Knights of Columbus #414.
      The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 31, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Fr. Jack Johnson, celebrant. The Rite of Committal will follow in St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery, under the auspices of the Bay County Veterans Council.
      Mr. Gloss will lie in state at the church Friday from 9 a.m. until the time of the service.
      Memorial cards for the wishes of the family will be available at the Gephart Funeral Home Inc., 201 W. Midland St., Bay City.
     
      INTERLOCHEN - Robert William Sheren, 75, of Interlochen, passed away peacefully in his sleep Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2003, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Robert was born in Buckley May 11, 1928, the youngest child of Claude and Jessie (Hall) Sheren. On Jan. 31, 1948, in Grand Rapids, he married Rita Wurm, his wife of 55 years.
      Robert was employed at Parsons and Traverse City Area Public Schools. He loved his family, home, nature, the great outdoors and especially enjoyed going to the U.P. with his sons.
      Robert is survived by his wife, Rita Sheren of Interlochen; seven children, Janet (Blake Hayner) Sheren of Chicago, Jerry (Sue) Sheren of Traverse City, Robert A. (Nikki) Sheren of Interlochen, Diane (Richard) Smith of Traverse City, Tom (Irene) Sheren of Traverse City, Steve (Jeanne) Sheren of Grandville, and Joanne (Bob) Sika of Interlochen; 24 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; and a sister, Leona Hulett of Grand Rapids.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and four sisters.
      Visitation will take place today, Oct. 30, at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary Thursday at 7 p.m.
      A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Oct. 31, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hannah, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. Gerald Micketti will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Hannah.
      Memorials may be directed to Carmelite Monastery or the Father Fred Foundation.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home, Kingsley.
     
      VALPARAISO, Ind. - Dr. G. Franklin Zaring, formerly of Traverse City, died Oct. 26, 2003, at Porter Memorial Hospital in Valparaiso, Ind. He was 84.
      Dr. Zaring was born in Washington, Iowa, on Nov. 24, 1918, to Glenn E. and Edith (Bovee) Zaring. He and Inez Brewington were wed in Christ Church Cathedral in St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 12, 1942. They were blessed with one son, Glenn C. Zaring.
      Zaring served in the U.S. Navy for three and a half years during World War II, receiving two stars - Asiatic-Pacific, three stars - Philippine Liberation, Good Conduct medal, American Campaign and Victory medals. He was honorably discharged in December 1945.
      Dr. Zaring earned two post-graduate degrees, Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) and Medical Doctor (MD), and was in general practice of osteopathic medicine for 35 years in Illinois prior to retiring and moving to Benzie County.
      He was very active in the medical field, serving as past president of the Illinois Osteopathic Association, life member of the American Osteopathic Association, and 14 years as trustee of Midwestern University College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery.
      After retirement, Dr. Zaring became active in Kiwanis and past president and lieutenant governor of the Crystal Lake Kiwanis Club in Benzonia, and most recently a member of the Kiwanis Noon Club of Traverse City. He was also a member of First Congregational Church in Benzonia, and founder and chairman of the Friends of Sleeping Bear Dunes, Inc., at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore in Empire.
      He is survived by his wife, Inez; son, Glenn C. (Catherine) Zaring of Chesterton, Ind.; brother, John II (Anne) of Coos Bay, Ore.; and a sister, Merrie E. (Dr. Jim) Holbert also of Coos Bay, Ore; and several nieces and nephews.
      Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at a later date in Traverse City.
