TRAVERSE CITY - The family and friends of Joanne H. Noller wish to honor and celebrate her life of service and love.
Born and raised in Muncie, Ind., Joanne obtained both her undergraduate and graduate degrees from Ball State University. She became widely recognized and appreciated for her loving concern for and education of hearing impaired students, mostly in Grand Rapids and Traverse City.
Many of her former students attribute to Joanne their ability to live normal lives today, and have returned over the years to thank her for her friendship and for her teaching.
Joanne always enjoyed spending time with family and friends watching the beautiful sunsets over West Bay, which she continued to do from her bedroom as she fought her cancer. She delighted in the simple beauty of nature, especially in the woods surrounding the family cabin in the Upper Peninsula.
Joanne will be remembered for her undying love and compassion, and will be recalled for her dedicated friendship to many. She battled for nine long years with cancer, but was more concerned about its effect on those around her than on herself. Even in her last days, Joanne wanted to hear about everyone's daily lives, offered encouragement and reassurance, and shared her smile, which for many of her family and friends had been her defining feature.
To many of her sons' friends, Joanne became known simply as "Mom Noller." The Noller home was filled with the laughter and smiles of the childhood friends who came to play when the boys were young. As adults, her sons' friends became her friends, and they all shared many evenings together watching the sunset, talking, laughing, and just enjoying each other's company.
Although no longer with us, Joanne's constant smiles, her love, her friendship, and her dignity will remain.
Joanne is survived by her husband of 44 years, Jim, and their family; Kent Noller, David (Rachel Lardie) Noller; her own little angel, granddaughter, Gracie (Mary Grace); her loving sister, Marilyn (Peter) Highland of Naples, Fla.; and two nieces, Kristin Highland of Naples, Fla., and Beth de Jesus of West Palm Beach, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harold M. Hays of Muncie, Ind.; and by her eldest son, Kurt.
Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at the Presbyterian Church on Sunday, Nov. 2, at 2:30 p.m., with the Rev. Dr. Homer Nye officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
Memorials for Joanne may be made to Munson Hospice for the Hospice House.
