Obituaries

MIDLAND - Pamela Zibbell, 48, of Midland, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Midland.
      She was born April 14, 1955, in Detroit, daughter of William and the late Fern (Stadler) Herrscher of South Lyon. On Aug. 31, 1973, in Detroit, she married Ronald C. Zibbell, who survives.
      Pamela graduated from Henry Ford High School in Detroit and obtained her associate's degree from Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City. She was the past president and current treasurer and vice president of the Mid-Michigan Association of Legal Support Professionals.
      Pamela's hobbies included homemaking and working in her many flower gardens.
      In addition to her husband Ronald, she is survived by three sons, Christopher (Jessicah) Zibbell of Burkburnett, Texas, William Zibbell and Ronald Zibbell Jr., both of Midland; a granddaughter, Alesha Zibbell of Burkburnett, Texas; and three sisters, Nancy (Leon) LaValley of Rockford, Ill., Dianne (John) Tymensky of Novi, and Laura (Don) Slater of Pinellas Park, Fla. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
      Funeral services will be held at 7 p.m. today, Sept. 14, from the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St., Midland. Interment will take place in Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park, Livonia.
      Pamela's family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 1 to 3 p.m. and from 5 p.m. until time of services.

      YORK, Pa. - Robert S. Spears Sr., D.C., age 83, of York, Pa., went home to glory on Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at the Brethren Home Community in New Oxford.
      Robert was born Oct. 8, 1919, in Munising, to the late Robert and Mildred (Whitmarsh) Spears. He was raised in Traverse City, where be met and married his wife of 60 years, Svea E. (Nylund) Spears.
      A veteran of World War Il, Robert served in the U.S. Coast Guard and achieved the rank of chief petty officer as a trainer in the signal corps in various ports along the eastern seaboard. He was honorably discharged following the end of the war, at which time he enrolled in Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, Ind.
      Upon graduation, be began his chiropractic practice in Fenton, where be was a well-known and respected health care provider for over 40 years and a member of the Chiropractic Association.
      Mr. Spears loved to garden, ride his motorcycle, read and study the Bible and listen to music. He was also an avid amateur radio operator. He was actively involved in the First Baptist Church in Fenton, where he assisted with the musical ministry and also taught adult education in the Sunday school.
      Following an accident in 1992, his practice was sold. In 1996, Mr. Spears moved to York, Pa., where he was a dedicated member of Calvary Baptist Church. He most recently became a resident of the Brethren Home Community in New Oxford, Pa.
      Robert is survived by his wife, Svea Spears of York; daughter, Janice (Joseph) Smith of York; son, Robert S. (Carol) Spears Jr. of Clemmons, N.C.; sister, Margaret (Kenneth) Wood of St. Johns; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter
      He was preceded in death by an infant son; a sister, Bernice Spears; and a brother, Charles Spears.
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at Calvary Baptist Church, 2740 Roosevelt Ave., York, with Pastor Tom Vietti officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to the time of service at the church.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 2740 Roosevelt Ave., York, PA 17404.
      Wetzel Funeral Home, 549 Carlisle St., Hanover, Pa., is in charge of arrangements.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Agnes R. Elbode, 88, of Traverse City, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003.
      Born Dec. 19, 1914, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Charles H. and Louise P. (Gildurski) Edwards. On April 10, 1937, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Karlin, she married Morris C. Elbode, who preceded her in death on March 1, 2001.
      Agnes was a homemaker who particularly enjoyed knitting and crocheting. During World War II she knitted numerous projects for the soldiers. She also was an avid bird-watcher, reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles.
      While raising her five daughters, Agnes was active in Girl Scouts, 4-H, and many school projects at Immaculate Conception School, as well as always being available when called upon to provide transportation to the Sisters of Mercy at Immaculate Conception Convent. Her grandfather, Matthew Gildurski, was one of the original founders of Immaculate Conception Parish.
      She served as a Gray Lady at the Traverse City State Hospital and was a member of the Greilickville Extension Club. She was a graduate of Traverse City Central High School. In 1967, Agnes fulfilled a lifetime dream by completing the licensed practical nursing program from Northwestern Michigan College. She later retired from Traverse City Osteopathic Hospital.
      Survivors include her five daughters, Pauline (Robert) Wegener of Empire, Judith (Charles) Belanger and Marian (John) Werner of Suttons Bay, Mary (Richard) Round of Traverse City, and Kathryn (Charles) Pittenger of Roscommon; 12 grandchildren, Robert (Margaret) Wegener Jr., Charles (Maureen) Wegener, David (Cheryl) Wegener, Nancy Wegener (Brent) Sherman, Jean Belanger (Mike) Bankey, John Werner Jr., Andrew (Mary) Werner, Amy and Emily Round, and Julia, Emma and Charles Pittenger; 12 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucyle Bashom of Anchorage, Alaska; sister-in-law, Shirley Edwards of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews.
      In addition to her husband, Morris, Agnes was also preceded in death by two sisters, Marion Kilgore and Suzanne Sheridan; and two brothers, John "Jack" Edwards and Charles H. "Chum" Edwards Jr.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Monday, Sept. 15, at 1 p.m., with the Rev. James Gardiner serving as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Philip Neri Cemetery, Empire.
      Visitation will take place this evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where the rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
      In remembrance, memorials may be directed to the St. Francis High School Band program.
     
      JOANN GRAPES, 85, of Traverse City, passed away Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Sept. 15, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with visitation one hour prior to the Mass. Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      H. THELMA (BIERI) PANT, age 86, passed away in New Port Richey, Fla. on June 15, 2003.
      Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 4301 Ambrose Ave. N.E., Grand Rapids. A reception will follow at the church.

      ROBERT W. ROHN, 77, of Manistee, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2003, at Tendercare of Manistee.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p .m. Monday, Sept. 15, at the Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Manistee. Friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from noon until time of services.
     
      BETTY JANE VITUCKI, 73, of Scottville, formerly of Manistee, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003, at her home.
      A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon Tuesday, Sept. 16, at St. Simon Catholic Church in Ludington. Cremation will take place at Oak Grove Cemetery in Manistee.
      The Oak Grove Cremation Center is serving the family.
     
      MANCELONA - Robert Wayne Wildfong Jr., 54, beloved husband, father and grandfather of Mancelona, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, after a long battle with multiple sclerosis.
      He was born Dec. 6, 1948, in Petoskey, the son of Robert and Dorothy (Alexander) Wildfong. He married Sandra (Wisler) Wildfong on Dec. 23, 1967, at United Methodist Church in Mancelona.
      He graduated from Central Michigan University, Mt. Pleasant, in 1970, with a bachelor's degree in education. He earned his master's degree from the same college in administration. He was a high school teacher and instructor of industrial arts. He also was involved in coaching. He coached football for many years and was selected Coach of the Year in 1983. He also coached basketball and track.
      Robert's career as a teacher was devoted to the Central Lake Public School System in Central Lake, which began in 1971, and he retired in 1997. His teaching goal was to make students believe in themselves and help them become the best possible people they could be. He treated them with respect and gave them room to grow and become a successful part of society. Robert was encouraging, inspiring, comforting, understanding, and concerned with all of his students. He enjoyed giving out nicknames to many of his students and was an accomplished teaser.
      Robert's interests were hunting, fishing and other sports. He enjoyed the fishing trips he took to Canada with his family. He was a great fan of football.
      Robert is survived by his wife, Sandy, of 36 years; two sons, John and Karen (Swain) Wildfong and brand new granddaughter, Kasandra June of Mancelona; and Brian and Tonya (Broad) Wildfong of Traverse City. Also surviving are his parents, Robert and Dorothy Wildfong Sr.; two sisters, Coleen (Wildfong) and Eric Sander and their children, Andy and Honey Sander and Eric and Melissa Sander; and Diane Wildfong and her children, Leigh Ann, Derek and Andre; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
      The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 14, at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Visitation will continue at the funeral home on Monday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Antrim Church of Christ in Mancelona. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona.
