Obituaries

      MANISTEE - Fredrick Korb, 53, of Manistee, formerly of Hart, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, in Manistee. He was born July 29, 1950, in Traverse City, the son of Fred L. and Dorothy (Srackangast) Korb.
      Fred graduated from St. Francis High School where he was an all-state and all-conference football player under Mike Kantiz. If he hadn't injured his left knee in 1969, he would have been offered a full scholarship by several colleges including the University of Michigan, Michigan State, Illinois and Wisconsin.
      In 1970, he worked for the ambulance service in Traverse City. He then attended the police academy in Mt. Clemens, Macomb County, where he graduated and became a police officer in 1971. He worked in Kalkaska under Mel Hill, where he was well-known as a K-9 handler. Fred then went to Lake County where he worked under Sheriff Bob Levin. On April 10, 1981, he went to work for Sheriff John Simons in Oceana County. Fred ran for sheriff of Oceana County, was elected in 1983, took office Jan. 1, 1984, and served for 16 years (the longest term of sheriff of Oceana County). Fred's doctor recommended retirement after Fred was diagnosed with terminal cancer.
      Fred is survived by his companion, Bonnie Curtis of Manistee; his parents, Fred and Dorothy Korb of Traverse City; son, Michael J. Korb of Arizona; a daughter, Tamie (Scott) Bancroft of Traverse City; six grandchildren; two brothers, Lavern Korb of California and Richard Korb of Massachusetts; a sister, Victoria (Mike) Anderson of Wisconsin; many nieces, nephews and friends; and special friends, Lt. Roger (Doris) Evans.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Hart, with Father Ron Schneider serving as celebrant. Graveside services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday in Oakwood Catholic Cemetery, Traverse City.
      Friends may call at the Tate Funeral Home in Hart on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., with a rosary recited at 7:30 p.m.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Oceana Hospice or Traverse City Hospice.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Eileen B. Kalchik, 69, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      A lifelong resident of the Traverse City area, she was a 1952 graduate of St. Francis High School and a lifelong member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
      During the 1950s, Eileen was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Co. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and spending time with her family.
      Born Mar. 1, 1934, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Louis and Barbara (Miller) Denoyer. On May 25, 1957, at St. Francis Catholic Church, she married Ivan J. Kalchik, who survives.
      Also surviving are her four children, Deb (Jim) Scherrer of Northport, Bob Kalchik of Maryland, Trisha (Rick) Micunek of Traverse City and Scott (Victoria) Kalchik of Chicago; seven grandchildren, Lauren and Nathan Sherrer, Christopher and Thomas Kalchik, Savannah and Alexis Micunek and Ethan Kalchik; sisters, Janette (Don) Swaney, Maxine (Don) Norton and Joyce (Bob) Chipman, all of Traverse City, sister and best friend, JoAnne (Norm) Lehr of Maple City; and a brother, Ray (Judy) Denoyer of Traverse City.
      Eileen was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Louie Denoyer Jr.; and a sister, Alice Ullery.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Catholic Church at noon on Friday, Sept. 19.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City this evening from 6 to 8 p.m., where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to either the Child & Family Services of Northwest Michigan or the Father Fred Foundation.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Leah Koss, 86, of Traverse City, passed away Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Birchwood Nursing Center, following a brief illness.
      Leah was born April 20, 1917, in Long Lake Township, and lived most of her life in Traverse City.
      She was an avid bowler and her teams won many championships. Leah worked for Milliken's Department Store, making draperies for many years.
      Survivors include her brother, Lawrence M. Tucker of Houston, Texas; a sister, Beatrice I. Kalahar; and 12 nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, all of whom she loved dearly.
      Leah was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Ica Tucker; brothers, Clarence and Fred Tucker; sister, Carrie J. Sublett; nephews, Brian Kalahar and Bob Sublett; and nieces, Judy and Bonnie Tucker and Katrina Kalahar.
      According to Leah's wishes, cremation has taken place and private services will be held at a later date.
      In remembrance, memorials may be directed to the charity of one's choice.
      Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      FIFE LAKE - Ricky Chalfant Jr., 22, of Fife Lake, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      Born in Traverse City on July 11, 1981, he was the son of Rick and Tamara (Clark) Chalfant. He grew up in the South Boardman area, where he had been a resident most of his life.
      Ricky was employed in construction. He loved basketball, children and animals, and had been a member of First Baptist Church of Canton.
      Survivors include his daughter, Sydney, and her mother, Shannon Thomas of Wayne; his father, Ricky (Brenda Giraud and her children) of Cedar; his mother, Tamara Chalfant of Fife Lake; two brothers, Daniel of Fife Lake and Jeremiah of Cedar; a sister, Katrina Chalfant (Kenneth Kelley) of South Boardman; grandparents, Philo (Joan) Clark of Kalkaska, Barbara Hominga of Traverse City and Jerry Chalfant of Brownsboro, Texas; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Evergreen Baptist Church in Kalkaska, with Pastor Jack Hoffman officiating. Burial will be in Oliver Township Cemetery.
      Visitation will be held at the church on Friday from noon until time of services.
      Arrangements were made by Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Audrey Maxine Anderson, 80, of Traverse City, died from complications of pulmonary fibrosis on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at Grand Traverse Pavilions, where she had been a resident for 18 months.
      Born in Madisonville, Ky., on Jan. 3, 1923, Audrey was the oldest daughter of Seigurd and Betzie (Carlson) Anderson.
      She was a graduate of Manistee High School in 1941. Following high school, Audrey worked for M&NE Railroad in Manistee. She attended Michigan State University and Northwestern Michigan College.
      Audrey married Glen Anderson in 1947. They moved to East Lansing, where he attended Michigan State University on the GI Bill and she worked as department secretary in AG Hall.
      Audrey and Glen had two children, Gil Anderson of Traverse City and Lori Anderson Terkeurst of Roscommon, who survive. The family moved to Traverse City in 1960 when Glen joined the faculty of Northwestern Michigan College.
      Active in Traverse City's Parent Teacher Associations, Audrey also participated in the Traverse City Booster's Club. She was a member of the Northwestern Michigan College Faculty Women's Club and a longtime volunteer on the National Cherry Festival Competition of Bands. Audrey was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where she served with her husband on the finance committee, sang in the choir and quilted with the ladies of the church. She was also a member of the Sons of Norway.
      In her early adulthood, Audrey learned to fly a Piper Cub "tail dragger" out of Blacker Airport in Manistee and was an airplane spotter during World War II. She orchestrated, supervised and participated in the weekend building of a large family home on Spruce Street in Manistee, a project that took family members over seven years to complete. Much later in Traverse City, Audrey and her brother, Sherwood, operated Anderson's Asparagus & Strawberry Farm on M-72 and Bugai Road, which is now the proposed site of a minor league baseball park.
      Audrey enjoyed traveling with her family and her dogs. She was a quiet, private woman who had enormous strength of character, coupled with high standards and expectations of herself and those she loved.
      Along with her two children, Audrey is also survived by her granddaughter, Cori Terkeurst of Roscommon; a sister, Jacqueline Tompkins-Weede (Edward Weede) of Traverse City; cousins, Carlson Waite of Howell and Joseph McNamara of Manistee; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; as well as many other family members through marriage.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, where friends may call one hour prior to services. The Rev. Bradley Will is officiating. Light refreshments will be served following the service.
      Burial will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Oak Grove Cemetery.
      In remembrance of Audrey, memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice, the Sharon Olson Palliative Care Center, or the Cherryland Humane Society.
      Audrey's family gratefully acknowledges the exceptional service and loving support of the staff of both Grand Traverse Pavilions and Munson Hospice, as well as the comfort provided by aeolian harpists from the Palliative Care Center on Old Mission Peninsula.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      EDWARD LEINO-JONES, 64, of Manistee, died Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2003, at West Shore Medical Center in Manistee.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 18, at Manistee United Methodist Church.

      BETTY M. JAMES, 86, of Ellsworth, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Ellsworth Wesleyan Church Burial will be in Southern Cemetery, Central Lake.
      Friends may call today from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hastings Funeral Home in Ellsworth.
     
      ROBERT G. KRUSE, 93, of Manistee, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at West Shore Medical Center, Manistee.
      Visitation will be held at Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee on Friday, Sept. 19, from 7 to 9 p.m., and will continue on Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m.
      Private family services will be held following cremation.
     
      DONALD M. BASFORD, 85, of Traverse City, died Jan. 24, 2003.
      Memorial services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 28, from First Congregational Church in Traverse City.
      Arrangements were entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes, Traverse City.
     
      LEONA NANKEE, 92, of Manistee, formerly of Ludington, died Sunday, Sept. 14, 2003, at Tendercare of Manistee.
      Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Sept. 18, at Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Ludington.
     
      CHARLES KENNETH WAUKAZOO, 78, of Kingsley, died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. this morning, Sept. 18, in Hillcrest Cemetery, Omena.
      Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, Traverse City, is in charge of arrangements.
     
      RANDY L. GORE, 46, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003.
      A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 19, at Bethel Assembly of God Church in Burton.
