Obituaries

TRAVERSE CITY - Robert H. Bruland, 93, of Traverse City, went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003.
      Born Aug. 11, 1910, in Detroit, Robert was preceded in passing by his parents, Christopher and Anna (Hafstad) Bruland; his brother, Christopher; and his sister, Agnes.
      A graduate of Cass Technical High School in Detroit, Robert worked as a manufacturer's representative throughout his life. He served in the U.S. Army for three years during World War II.
      Robert married Florence Hutchinson on July 11, 1945, in Detroit, and they moved to Traverse City in 1961. They were blessed with 57 years of marriage until Florence's passing in August 2002. During the past year, Robert had been a resident at Tendercare of Traverse City.
      Robert is survived by his daughter, Gail (Phil) Danner of Boston, Ga.; his son, Gary (Esther) Bruland of Howell; grandchildren, Thomas Danner, Peter Bruland, Joanna and Eric Heinz, Amy and Scott Crisp and Joel Danner; and great-grandchildren, Myka Heinz, and Hunter, Beau and Josie Crisp.
      A memorial service celebrating Robert's life and eternal life will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at First Baptist Church, 248 Washington St., Traverse City, where he was an active member. The Rev. Tom Mansfield will officiate.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to First Baptist Church in Traverse City.
      The Oak Grove Cremation Center of Manistee is in charge of arrangements.
     
      SAN FRANCISCO - Terrance James O'Halloran, 55, a resident of San Francisco, passed away on Friday, Aug., 22, 2003.
      He was born in Detroit to Maurice and Denise (McGee) O'Halloran on Dec. 21, 1947. He was a graduate of St. Mary's College in Moraga, Calif.
      Terry was a former sales manager for Stuart Hall Co. in Kansas City, Mo. He enjoyed traveling and was an avid bowler.
      Survivors include his mother, Denise of Traverse City; two brothers, Dennis O'Halloran of Mobile, Ala. and Pablo (Teresa) Villicana of Concord, Calif.; two nephews, Alex and Eric; a niece, Lily; two aunts, Sister Borgia Anne McGee SSJ of Nazareth, Mich., and Mary Henahan of Royal Oak; five uncles, John (Marian) McGee of Leesburg, Fla., Patrick (Rose) McGee of Broken Arrow, Okla., William (Bernadette) McGee of Traverse City, James (Jane) O'Halloran of St. Clair Shores, and William O'Halloran of Captain Cook, Hawaii; two great-aunts, Mary Mace of Cadillac and Isabelle McGee of Essexville; and many other family members.
      Terry was preceded in death by his father, Maurice, in March 1995.
      Cremation has taken place. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at St. Francis Catholic Church. The Rev. James Gardiner and the Rev. Patrick Maher will concelebrate. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Cadillac.
      In remembrance, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Stanley E. Susan, 89, of Traverse City, died Friday, Sept. 19, 2003, at Orchard Creek Dementia Care.
      Born May 16, 1914 in Oakfield, Wis., he was the son of Walter and Ida (Sackett) Susan.
      He attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette, taught school for a few years and then started graduate school at the University of Iowa. Stan paid his way through college painting houses and putting on magic shows.
      While studying in Iowa, Stan met his wife, the former Ruth Fall, a preacher's daughter from lower Michigan. She preceded him in death in 1993. In 1997, he married the former Irene Rogers, who survives.
      Stan served his country honorably with the United States Navy during World War II. He later became superintendent of schools in Hulbert, Mich. From there, he entered employment with YMCA World Service in Milwaukee, Wis. In 1958, the YMCA moved Stan, Ruth and their four children, Stanley, Elaine, Paul and Willard, to La Paz, Bolivia, later to Quito, Ecuador, both in South America, and then back to Traverse City where he retired from the YMCA.
      Afterward, Stan painted houses, sold investments and real estate. In 1984, Stan and Ruth moved to Hendersonville, N.C. for the winter months. He had been involved with the Rotary Club, Gideon International and the 29ers, a group of volunteers who tackle work projects such as rebuilding after a hurricane.
      Stan enjoyed sailing, skiing, woodworking, painting, crafts, reading, playing games, the violin and a musical saw. Coming from a Methodist background, he loved singing, especially solos with church choirs. Stan will be fondly remembered for being positive, optimistic, helpful, considerate and always a perfect gentlemen with a great sense of humor.
      Along with his wife, Irene of Hendersonville, N.C., Stan is also survived by his children, Elaine S. Bonaire of Traverse City, Paul A. (Cyndy) Susan of Anderson, Ind., and Willard F. (Cheryl) Susan of Traverse City; stepchildren, Thomas "TJ" (Lynn) Kramer of Cincinnati, Ohio, William (Nancy) Kramer of California, and Sue (Jim) Stringer of Shelby Township; sister, Alice (Meredith) Fall of Traverse City; 10 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
      Along with his first wife, Ruth, Stan was also preceded in death by his son, Stanley in 1990; son-in-law, Ariel Bonaire in 1995; and his brother, Frank Susan.
      Friends may call from 2 to 5 p.m. today, Sept. 21, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Emmanuel United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Doug Pedersen officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Grawn.
      In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to Emmanuel United Methodist Church or Gideon International.
     
      OXFORD - William Joseph Priest, 61, of Oxford, formerly of Suttons Bay, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003.
      He was the dear father of William Priest, Joseph (Betsy) Priest, Mark (Teri) Priest and Dawn (Dave) Arends. Also surviving are eight grandchildren and a sister, Sharon Holliday.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Suttons Bay, where the family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass.

      WILLIAM L. HALL, 74, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at Birchwood in Traverse City.
      Arrangements will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.

      JANICE KAYE LUNDY, 24, of East Jordan, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at Munson Medical Center.
      A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at Lighthouse Missionary Church in East Jordan, where friends may call from 1 p.m. until time of service.
      The family was served by Penzien Funeral Homes, East Jordan.
     
      LINDA MARIE MICKLES, 53, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, in Kingsley.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.

      RUBY V. MILBERT, 69, of Interlochen, died at home Saturday morning, Sept. 20, 2003.

      PAUL D. ROLFE, 62, of Maple Forest Township, died at home Friday, Sept. 19, 2003.
      Friends may call today, Sept. 21, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, Grayling.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Forest Township Cemetery.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Harlan B. Woods, 84, of Traverse City, died Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Birchwood Nursing Center.
      Born May 6, 1919, in Harlan County, Ky., he was the son of Jesse and Sarah Woods. On Sept. 17, 1940, at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Wyandotte, he married the former Leona B. Nowak, who survives.
      Harlan served his country honorably with the United States Air Force for two years in Korea, building barracks for his fellow servicemen. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and worked in Traverse City and Gaylord for over 50 years building and remodeling some of the finest homes in Traverse City. Harlan and his family enjoyed their time together traveling.
      Along with his wife, Leona, Harlan is also survived by his children, Sandra Ouimet of Novi, Michael (Sharon) Woods of Trenton, and Lenore Bondie of Nashville, Ga.; seven grandchildren, Deanna, Randy, Chris, Tim, Jason, Bryan and Adam; five great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Rosemary Woods of Kingsley; three sisters, Evelyn, Janell and Helen; a brother, Herbert; and many nieces and nephews.
      Harlan was preceded in death by his son, Leonard; granddaughter, Angela; sisters, Grace and Eva; and a brother, Lou.
      A memorial Mass will be celebrated at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Michael Janowski will serve as celebrant. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens on Thursday at 2 p.m.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Carmelite Monastery.
