September 23, 2003Union, Munson settle complaint about nurse hiringTerms will remain confidentialByRecord-Eagle staff writer TRAVERSE CITY - Teamsters Local 406 and Munson Medical Center officials have settled a complaint that claimed the hospital refused to hire striking nurses from Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Hospital spokesman Al Parker said the charge "has been settled amiably with the union," adding that the settlement will stop a National Labor Relations Board administrative law hearing on the charge previously scheduled for today in Traverse City. Both Parker and Teamsters attorney Ted Iorio said that as part of the settlement agreement, its terms will remain confidential. "The settlement was encompassing in regard to satisfying the concerns that the striking nurses had, and, I think, satisfying Munson's concerns," Iorio said. The union had originally charged that Munson officials were refusing to hire nurses from Petoskey specifically because they were on strike, and that the hospital was also making requirements from NMH applicants not required of other applicants. Parker said Munson officials had all along denied wrongdoing in the facility's hiring practices. Munson vice president of human resources Sue Peters earlier told the Record-Eagle that Munson has offered positions to striking nurses from Petoskey, but "have asked that they demonstrate their commitment to working for Munson once the strike ends."
