DIETRICH, 78, of Kalkaska, died on Monday, March 22, 2004, at his home.A funeral Mass will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 12, 2004, at St. Mary's of the Woods Catholic Church in Kalkaska. Arrangements are being handled by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. TRAVERSE CITY - Carl Arthur Johnson, 77, of Traverse City, died on Monday, March 29, 2004, at Grand Traverse Pavilions, Respite Center, with his loving wife and caring family by his side. Born Aug. 21, 1926, in Frankfort, he was the son of Carl A. and Marie (Nelson) Johnson Sr. Carl married Florence 'Mike' on May 6, 1960, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City. He served his country honorably in World War II, with the United States Army-Air Force and later, with the Merchant Marines. He was employed by Michigan Bell, AT&T, and Lucent Technologies, retiring in 1985, after 38 years of service. Later, Carl was self-employed as owner and operator of Johnson's Communication Services, which served Sara Lee Corp., Old Kent Bank, and Lake States Insurance; he retired in January of 2000. Carl's memberships included a life membership with the Traverse City Elks Club and Telephone Pioneers of America. An avid outdoorsman and vegetable gardener, Carl enjoyed tennis, hunting, fishing, boating and partying on Long Lake. He also enjoyed snowmobiling, photography, reading, music and trips with family and friends, especially traveling to Cancun for the last 24 years. He loved his wife and family and always enjoyed his many friends. He will always be remembered for being totally honest and fun-loving, and letting you know exactly what he was thinking. Along with his wife, Florence 'Mike' Johnson, of 45 devoted years, Carl is survived by his children, Laura Jean (Jim) Quick of Harbor Springs, and Mark C. (Gaylene) Johnson of Spokane, Wash.; stepsons, Kerry (Leslie) Smith of Petoskey, and Jack S. (Gail) Smith of Traverse City; six grandchildren; and a sister, Beth Bullock of California. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may call on Friday, April 16, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2004, also at the funeral home. The Rev. Dr. David Gabel will be officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. In remembrance, memorial contributions may be directed to Bethlehem Lutheran Church, the Long Lake Foundation, or the Traverse City Elks Lodge. Died March 27, 2004 ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - Ruth Elizabeth Jaquish Snell died unexpectedly at her Englewood, Fla., home on March 27, 2004, at the age of 78. She was born on Aug. 22, 1925, to John William and Iva (Lamb) Sherman, in Joyfield Township, Benzonia. Ruth will be greatly missed. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, vibrant with a love of life. A remarkable woman, she had a generous spirit, frequently gifting friends and family with gifts from her garden and kitchen. Her talents included quilting, writing, painting, sewing, and knitting. She was a mend to all and a great listener, offering wisdom and compassion with unhurried ease. During her working career, she was a maintenance welder for Parts Manufacturing during WWII. She worked for 27 years at the Traverse City State Hospital, first as an attendant nurse, and then as an art therapist, later earning her associates degree in nursing from Northwestern Michigan College; she finished her career as a Registered Nurse at the hospital in 1982. During her retirement, Ruth was an active Hospice volunteer. Known as 'Nonny' to her children and grandchildren, she traveled with them to Canada, Florida, Washington, D.C., France, and Niagara Falls. She taught them about flowers, plants and picking berries, instilling in them a love of nature. She also taught them how to cook, sew, knit, and play the kazoo. She was the originator of tractor picnics and strawberry pigouts. Her great-grandchildren loved her as well, and looked forward to having tea parties with her, where they always managed to snitch an extra sugar cube and cookie. Ruth celebrated her 70th birthday with a 70-mile bike ride through Leelanau County with her family. She continued this example of healthy living throughout her life. Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband, Ellis Jaquish; her second husband, Robert Snell; her son, James Jaquish; and a brother, Charles Lamb. She is survived by her son, Richard Jaquish, and daughter Patricia (Michael) Corning, of Interlochen; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Gavin) Baillie, and great-grandchildren, Ivy and Benjamin Baillie, of Lake Ann; grandchildren, Sarah Jaquish of San Francisco, Calif., and John (Michelle) Jaquish and Anna (Vicente) Serrano, of Traverse City; sister, Joan Matheson of Osh Kosh, Wis.; and brother, Richard Lamb of Land 0 Lakes, Fla. She is also survived by stepchildren, Robert (Sandy) Snell Jr., Cynthia (Tom) Gray, William Snell, and Chad (Linda) Snell and their families. In addition, she is survived by Sam, her devoted poodle. Ruth has touched our lives forever, and her love is etched in our hearts. Please join the family as we remember and celebrate her life at an open house to be held on April 10, 2004, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the home of Mike and Patty Corning, 6893 South Betsie River Road in Interlochen. ESCANABA - Catharine 'Kay' Horning, 86, of Escanaba, formerly of Traverse City, died on Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2004, at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. Catharine McLeod Allen was born on Jan. 8, 1918, in Calumet, the daughter of Thomas W. and Jean (Unsworth) Allen. On June 27, 1941, she married George Baird Horning in Calumet; he preceded her in death on March 17, 1965. Kay was a graduate of Calumet High School and Cleary College. She later became employed as a medical secretary at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor, and Eastern Michigan University Health Service. Kay moved to the Traverse City area in 1976, and was employed in the Health Occupations Division at Northwestern Michigan College until her retirement in 1980. Following retirement, she was active in coaching eighth grade students for the National Spelling Bee and volunteered for Hospice. Devoted to the welfare of animals, she was a past president of, and very involved with, the Cherryland Humane Society. She was also a member of Grace Episcopal Church. Survivors include a daughter, Janet Lindstrom of Escanaba; son, Col. Thomas Horning with the United States Army stationed in Hinesville, Ga.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Kay was preceded in death by her brother, Col. John U. Allen; son-in-law, James Lindstrom; and a grandson. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2004, at Grace Episcopal Church in Traverse City. The Rev. D. Edward Emenheiser will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Ypsilanti. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Cherryland Humane Society. Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
