Ruth Elizabeth Jaquish Snell Died March 27, 2004 ENGLEWOOD, Fla. - Ruth Elizabeth Jaquish Snell died unexpectedly at her Englewood, Fla., home on March 27, 2004, at the age of 78. She was born on Aug. 22, 1925, to John William and Iva (Lamb) Sherman, in Joyfield Township, Benzonia. Ruth will be greatly missed. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, vibrant with a love of life. A remarkable woman, she had a generous spirit, frequently gifting friends and family with gifts from her garden and kitchen. Her talents included quilting, writing, painting, sewing, and knitting. She was a friend to all and a great listener, offering wisdom and compassion with unhurried ease. During her working career, she was a maintenance welder for Parts Manufacturing during WWII. She worked for 27 years at the Traverse City State Hospital, first as an attendant nurse, and then as an art therapist, later earning her associates degree in nursing from Northwestern Michigan College; she finished her career as a Registered Nurse at the hospital in 1982. During her retirement, Ruth was an active Hospice volunteer. Known as 'Nonny' to her children and grandchildren, she traveled with them to Canada, Florida, Washington, D.C., France, and Niagara Falls. She taught them about flowers, plants and picking berries, instilling in them a love of nature. She also taught them how to cook, sew, knit, and play the kazoo. She was the originator of tractor picnics and strawberry pigouts. Her great-grandchildren loved her as well, and looked forward to having tea parties with her, where they always managed to snitch an extra sugar cube and cookie. Ruth celebrated her 70th birthday with a 70-mile bike ride through Leelanau County with her family. She continued this example of healthy living throughout her life. Ruth was preceded in death by her first husband, Ellis Jaquish; her second husband, Robert Snell; her son, James Jaquish; and a brother, Charles Lamb. She is survived by her son, Richard Jaquish, and daughter Patricia (Michael) Corning, of Interlochen; grandchildren, Elizabeth (Gavin) Baillie, and great-grandchildren, Ivy and Benjamin Baillie, of Lake Ann; grandchildren, Sarah Jaquish of San Francisco, Calif., and John (Michelle) Jaquish and Anna (Vicente) Serrano, of Traverse City; sister, Joan Matheson of Osh Kosh, Wis.; and brother, Richard Lamb of Land 0 Lakes, Fla. She is also survived by stepchildren, Robert (Sandy) Snell Jr., Cynthia (Tom) Gray, William Snell, and Chad (Linda) Snell and their families. In addition, she is survived by Sam, her devoted poodle. Ruth has touched our lives forever, and her love is etched in our hearts. Please join the family as we remember and celebrate her life at an open house to be held on April 10, 2004, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the home of Mike and Patty Corning, 6893 South Betsie River Road in Interlochen.
