April 14, 2004ObituariesFRANKFORT - Olaf 'Ole' L. Dyrdal, 71, of Frankfort, died on Monday morning, April 12, 2004. Ole was born on March 15, 1933, in Frankfort, the son of Marcus and Britt (Johnson) Dyrdal. On Nov. 24, 1962, he married Nancy Williams, who survives.After graduation from Frankfort High School, Ole served his country with the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict, being discharged with the rank of sergeant. He was a carpenter, living his entire life in Benzie County. In addition to his wife, Ole is survived by his daughter, Tina Koch of Benzonia; two grandchildren, Hope Elizabeth Koch and Eric Lewis Koch; a great-grandson, Wesley Robert Koch; a brother, Roy (Betsy) Dyrdal of Frankfort; and two sisters, Judy (Wayne) Ingelston of Beulah, and Mary Ann Johnson of Frankfort. Ole was preceded in death by his parents. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2004, from the Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Gilmore Twp. Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the American Legion Post #221 in Frankfort. MT. PLEASANT - George David 'Dave' Christensen, 56, of Mt. Pleasant, died on Sunday, April 11, 2004, at Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant. Dave was born April 18, 1947, in Chicago, the son of Norman W. and Ruth Ann (Hill) Christensen. In 1949, Dave and his family moved to Suttons Bay, where he graduated from high school. He then graduated from Central Michigan University in 1970, with a bachelor's degree in science education; in 1978, he received his master's degree in science administration. Dave enlisted in the Navy on July 10, 1970, during the Vietnam era; he received the National Defense Service Medal and Vietnam Service Medal with one bronze star. After his discharge, he enlisted in the United States Reserves until 1989. Dave married Lou Ann Brown on Sept. 17, 1988, in Mt. Pleasant. He was employed by Champion, Inc. from 1978 until 1998, and most recently as lead valet for Soaring Eagle Casino. He was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, the Men's Group and the choir. He enjoyed basketball, hunting, fishing, golf, reading and music. Dave is survived by his wife, Lou Ann of Mt. Pleasant; children, Amy Nicole and Ryan David Christensen of Mt. Pleasant; parents, Norman W. and Ruth Christensen of Suttons Bay; mother-in-law, Fern Brown of Mt. Pleasant; one brother, Steven R. (Colleen) Christensen, and their children, Dustin and Ashley, of Suttons Bay; one sister, Claudia J. (William) Hendry, and their children, Danielle and Brooke, of Caledonia; one sister-in-law, Sharon (Thomas) Breidinger, and their children, Christopher and Rachel, of Alma; and two brothers-in-law, Gary (Colleen) Brown of St. Louis, Mo., and Doug (Kristine) Brown, and their children, Tyler and Lindsay of Mt. Pleasant. Dave was preceded in death by his grandparents; and by his father-in-law, Neuman 'Brownie' Brown. A memorial service for Dave will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2004, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant, with Pastor Terry I. Nordheim officiating. Visitation with the family will be held on Thursday, April 15, 2004, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Clark Funeral Chapel in Mt. Pleasant. CARL ARTHUR JOHNSON, 77, who died on March 29, 2004, will have memorial services at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Friends may call at the funeral home on Friday, April 16, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A graveside service for ZORA A. RICHARDSON, 101, of Kalkaska, who died on Feb. 15, 2004, will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, at Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements have been handled by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. ROCKFORD - Mr. Rex Dwight Mallion, 68, died peacefully on April 12, 2004, surrounded by family, in the comfort of his home, following a courageous battle with cancer. Rex was born on Feb. 4, 1936, in Traverse City, where he spent his childhood. Rex spent four years in the U.S. Army. After his military service, he met and married Loretta Gray of Manton, in 1961. He moved to Grand Rapids, where he was employed with Tannewitz for several years before going to work for the City of Grand Rapids in the traffic signal department as a lineman/electrician. Rex and his wife raised their three daughters in Kentwood and moved to Cannonsburg in 1989. He retired in 1998, after 28 years of service with the City of Grand Rapids. Rex was a life member of the Creston VFW Post #3023 and a 10-year-member with the Tri Town Conservation Club. He and his wife enjoyed motorcycling and were members of GWTA, Michigan Chapter C. He had a passion for hunting deer, elk and turkey, and puttering in his garage. One of the big enjoyments in Rex's life was spending time with his family. He is survived by his wife, Loretta 'Lori'; daughters, Kathy (Steve) Smith of Springboro, Ohio, Lisa Mallion (Charles Hook) of Belleville, and Dawn (Tim) Russell of Coopersville; five grandchildren, Travis Wayne, Andrew Steven, Leslie Jane, Clay Riley and Leah Morgan; brothers, Robert (Irma) of Interlochen, William of Little Rock, Ark., and Delbert (Helen) of Traverse City; sisters, Cora Mae Pierce of Traverse City, Peggy Chance of West Plains, Mo., and Dorothy Jo Lardie (Ted Dietz) of Ocala, Fla.; sisters-in-law, Marion Mallion of Ludington, and Linda Wise of Ocala, Fla.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Rex was preceded in death by his parents, Louis Alexander and Dorothy Mallion; infant sister, Doris Mae; brother, Louis; and sister, Nora Mae Dewar. The memorial service for Mr. Mallion will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 17, 2004, at Pederson Funeral Home in Rockford, where the family will greet relatives and friends from noon until the time of the service. Pastor Tim Hall will officiate. Military honors will be under the auspices of the Kent County Veterans Honor Guard. TRAVERSE CITY - Robert George 'Bob' Kyselka, 81, of Traverse City, died on Monday, April 12, 2004, at his home. He was born on Dec. 8, 1922, in a combination general store, post office and gas station in Summit City, the son of Ruth Darling (Jackson) and Louis Henry Kyselka; he is a descendent of the Joseph Kyselka family, who pioneered in the Traverse City area in 1858. On August 21,1943, in Detroit, Bob married Jeanne (Knight) Kyselka. Bob was fun-loving, always quick-witted, clever, and very likable his entire life. A nickname that has stuck with him through the years, from his days in the Kingsley-Summit City area, is the 'Honorary Mayor of Summit City.' Growing up in the Summit City-Kingsley area, Bob was active and had a lifelong love of sports. He played on the Summit City Independent Baseball team when he was 10 years old, and before graduation in 1941, he played basketball for four years at Kingsley High School. From 1943 to 1948, Bob bought, owned and operated a general store in Fife Lake called Kyselka's Grocery & Meat. While living there, he helped organize a baseball team, and for Sunday entertainment, they invited other sandlot teams up to Fife Lake to play. Bob moved to Traverse City in 1949, where he was an LPN and a unit supervisor at the Traverse City State Hospital, retiring after 32 years of service. He bought property that is now the Holiday Inn and enjoyed living near the water, and he coached in the Traverse City Babe Ruth League. Bob was a member of the FOE Aerie #383, Elk's Lodge #323, and the American Military League (AML), all in Traverse City, and the State Employees Retirement Association. In addition to baseball, Bob enjoyed bowling, pool, hunting and fishing. He was a fan of the Detroit Tigers and Chicago Cubs particularly, and collected various baseball memorabilia, especially concerning the Tigers. He was an avid euchre player, playing in many tournaments with his wife, and had a lifelong love of Country Western music and dancing with his wife. One of his favorite local bands was Agnes & The Polka Dots. A great accomplishment in Bob's life was traveling with his family to all 50 United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean Islands, and Europe. He is survived by his wife Jeanne; three children, Roberta and her spouse, Gary Hoover, of Clinton Twp., Luana Jeanne Kyselka, M.D. and her spouse, Dr. Michael Patt, of Bloomfield Hills, and Kyle Kyselka and his spouse, Peggy Sue, of Gilbert, Ariz.; eight grandchildren, David Sarkis, Marisa Patt, Minda Patt, Amy Patt, Seth Kyselka, Lars Kyselka, Hans Kyselka and Sven Kyselka; one great-grandson, David Sarkis II; one brother, James Kyselka of Fife Lake; and Bob's lifelong friend, Phillip Bowden. Bob was preceded in death by a son, Dominic George, in March of 2000. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 14, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A funeral service will take place at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 15, 2004, also at the funeral home, with additional visitation one hour prior to service. Rev. Jeremy Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made, in honor of Bob, to Munson Hospice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
