April 18, 2004ObituariesROGERS, Ark. - Marietta Valentine Alton, 63, of Rogers, Ark., died on Monday, April 5, 2004, at The Sisters of Mercy St. Mary's Hospital in Rogers. She was born on June 7, 1940, in Chicago, to Nello Valentine and Carmella Leo Valentine.Marietta graduated from Sienna High School in Chicago, and attended DePaul University. She was active in numerous civic and community organizations in the Dallas area and retired, after 25 years of dedication and loyalty, from GTE Directories Corp. In 1994, she and her husband of 41 years, Howard, moved to Northwest Arkansas from Southlake, Texas. Marietta was a devoted member of Fellowship Bible Church of Northwest Arkansas, where she helped start the Spiritual Gifts Program. She also was involved in various other ministries and community groups of the church. Marietta enjoyed entertaining friends at her home, playing golf and tennis, and was an avid Razorback fan. She loved her God, her husband and her family. She and her husband have enjoyed visiting her brother and parents, who have lived on his farm outside Cedar for over 30 years. Surviving Marietta are her husband, Howard; her brother, Nello Valentine (Susan Bullock) of Cedar; her sister, Vanessa Valentine-Nixon (Arthur) of Rockwall, Texas; two brothers-in-law, Louis (Debbie) Alton of Traverse City and Jeff (Jessica) Alton of New York City; and two nephews, Nello Valentine III (Geri) of Cedar and Rifino Valentine of New York City. She was preceded in death by her sister, Cherie Valentine; as well as her parents, Nello and Carmella. A memorial service was held on April 10, 2004, at Fellowship Bible Church in Rogers, Ark. A graveside committal took place at Martin LaRue Cemetery near LaRue, Ark. Memorial contributions may be made, in honor of Marietta, to St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 98, Rogers, AR 72757-0098. VENICE, Fla. - Dianne E. Connine, 74, died at Bon Secours Assisted Living Facility in Venice, Fla., on April 11, 2004, following a brief illness with lung cancer. She was born on April 20, 1929, in Steubenville, Ohio, to the late Charles and Lucille McFarland. She attended Holton Arms High School in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh in 1951. Dianne worked in the retail industry in Traverse City, and was a retail buyer in Chicago. She also briefly made her home in Corpus Christi, Texas. Her years as a social worker in Leelanau County were some of the most satisfying of her career; she particularly enjoyed working with the members of the Native American Community. While in Traverse City, Dianne was an active member of the Traverse City Women's Club, Traverse City Musicale, Job Winslow Chapter of the D.A.R., and a founding member and past president of the Quota Club of Traverse City. She was also a member of the First Congregational Church in Traverse City, and attended Trinity Presbyterian after moving to Venice, Fla., in 1999. Diane is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jeanette and Ralph Meyer of Portage; and a granddaughter, Elizabeth Meyer of Chicago. She also is survived by Kate Brown of Venice, Fla., a nurse who provided Dianne with excellent care and true friendship. She was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Connine. In accordance with Dianne's wishes, she has been cremated and will be interred in Steubenville, Ohio, at a later date. A memorial service will be held in Traverse City later this year. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cherryland Humane Society, 1750 Ahlberg Rd., Traverse City, MI 49686, or to any other charity that benefits cats, one of Dianne's true loves. Born on March 12, 1934, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Gerald E. Riness and Alice Mitchell. June enjoyed being a homemaker and always being there for her family. She loved to crochet and work crossword puzzles. She enjoyed the outdoors and camping with family and friends. June especially loved family gatherings, spending time with her grandchildren and cooking for all. She is survived by five children, Kathy Holroyd of Kalamazoo, Joe (Denise) Runge of Kalamazoo, Cindy (John) Schichtel of Buckley, Cheri (Duane) Pieper of Interlochen and Rich Runge of Traverse City; four sisters; five brothers; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. June was preceded in death by her mother, Alice Pringle; and stepfather, Dale Pringle; two brothers; and one sister. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Monday, April 19, 2004, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Pastor Don Hadfield will officiate. Private burial services will take place at Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. INTERLOCHEN - Evelyn M. Eash, 83, of Interlochen, left the pain and trouble of this world for the peace and joy of heaven on Friday, April 16, 2004, at Brigadoon Assisted Living in Traverse City. Born in Toledo, Ohio, on Aug. 28, 1920, she was the daughter of Arthur and Lena (Draheim) Marquardt. She married Owen L. Eash on Aug. 30, 1941. Evelyn loved her God, her husband, her family, her friends and her home. For most of her life, she spent many hours reading, writing letters to friends and family, working on craft projects, gardening and taking pictures. She was the 1988 State Winner in the GFWC Landscape Photography contest. She and her husband also served as volunteers at Munson Medical Center, and Evelyn was the Interlochen Women's Club president for several years. Evelyn is survived by her four children, Sharon Eash of Traverse City, Robert Eash of Lansing, Bruce Eash of Lansing and Thomas (Charlene) Eash of Interlochen; four grandchildren; three sisters; and one brother. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Jane, June and Marian; and two brothers, George and Glenn. The family has requested that no visitation be held. A Celebration of Life service will take place at 1 p.m., on Friday, April 23, 2004, at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, with the Rev. Jon DeBruyn of the Fellowship Church officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. DENNIS FIELDING, 61, of Vanderbilt, died on April 9, 2004. Arrangements are being handled by Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. SHARON LOUISE GORDON, 56, of Fife Lake, died on Friday, April 16, 2004, at home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Fife Lake Baptist Church in Fife Lake, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Boardman Township Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. THOMAS MOEHRING, 66, of Gaylord, died on Thursday, April 15, 2004. Arrangements are being handled by Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. CLYDE PAIGE of Traverse City died on Nov. 7, 2004, in Grass Valley, Calif. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 20, 2004, at Asbury United Methodist Church in Traverse City. His remains will be interred in the Charlevoix Cemetery with his wife, Virginia.
