Obituaries

     
      THELMA GALVIN BATES, 90, of Traverse City, died Monday, April 26, 2004, at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
      Friends may call Wednesday, April 28, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 29, in the chapel at Central United Methodist Church.
      A complete obituary will appear in the Wednesday edition of the Record-Eagle.
           
      MARY GRACE BUFFEY, 80, of Northport, formerly of St. Cloud, Fla., died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at Leelanau Memorial Health Center.
      No services are planned at this time. Burial will in St. Cloud.
      Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay is in charge of arrangements.
           
      ARTHUR LLOYD MELKILD, 78, of Traverse City, formerly of Northport, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at his home.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 1, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport, with visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Rev. Ruth Overdier will officiate. Burial will be in Leelanau Township Cemetery.
      Arrangements are being handled by Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay.
           
      PATRICIA J. RICHARDSON, 72, died Saturday, April 24, 2004, at her daughter's home in Grayling.
      A memorial service will be planned for a later date this summer.
      Arrangements are being handled by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
     
      INTERLOCHEN - Christian Ivar Jacobsen, 69, passed away April 14, 2004, in Interlochen. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Nov. 13, 1934.
      His father, Hans Christian Jacobsen and his mother, Adeline Ranger Jacobsen, preceded him in death.
      He is survived, and sorely missed, by his sisters, Barbara Wood of Pueblo, Colo., Joan (Grant) Perry of The Woodlands, Texas, and Peggy (Bill) Kehrer of Cincinnati. He will also be missed by the Ranger cousins in Northport, and by his 12 nieces and nephews.
      Chris was a beloved brother and loyal friend who cherished his family. He enjoyed travel, playing cards and the Lake Michigan area, where he chose to spend his later years.
      The Benzonia Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, is in charge of arrangements.
                 
            GRAYLING - Walter Robert Mansfield, 76, of Grayling, died Sunday, April 25, 2004, at Grayling Nursing Center after a heroic battle with cancer.
      Mr. Mansfield was born Nov. 15, 1927, in Hazel Park, and spent the majority of his life in the Detroit area. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.
      Mr. Mansfield was employed for over 40 years with a Dodge Truck plant in Warren as a supervisor, retiring in 1986. He was a strong advocate for those who served under him at Dodge Truck, and kept in touch with many fellow employees. After retirement, he moved to Grayling, where he had vacationed since he was young.
      Mr. Mansfield was a dedicated individual, serving the community both downstate and here, and was a past president of the Grayling F.O.E. #3465. He was an avid fisherman, a loving husband, an adoring Pa-Pa, and a best friend to his children.
      Memorial services will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 28, at the Grayling Eagles Hall, with dinner to follow. Interment will be in White Chapel Cemetery in Troy, next to the love of his life, the late Bonnie (Steiss), who preceded him in death on Dec. 27, 1985. Another service will be held downstate later this week.
      He is survived by his children, David (Melanie) of Sterling Heights, Bambi Mansfield-Sanderson (Dan Sanderson) of Grayling; his grandchildren, Dakotah Logan Mansfield and Bennette Dannyell Sanderson, both of Grayling; his siblings, James (Edith) of Lathrup Village, Betty (Elton) Dunn of Interlochen, Naomi (Nick) Mihaescu of Grayling and J.D. (Molly) of Pennsylvania; nephew, Robert Kelly of Grayling; and special friends Charlotte and Bill Fairbotham and family, and Jerry and Marie Ketchmark.
      In addition to his wife, Bonnie, he was preceded in death by his parents, George and Gladys F. (Streeter) Mansfield; a brother, Edgar; a sister, Elaine Kaczmierczak; and a granddaughter, Bonnie Lace Mansfield.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Crawford Co. Library/Walter Mansfield Memorial Fund, 201 Plum St., Grayling, MI 49738. The money collected will be used to establish a reading/senior outreach program for shut-ins and those in care centers.
      Arrangements are being handled by Nelson Funeral Home, Inc., of Gaylord.
