Throughout his life, he enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, golf, playing tennis, biking, poker, bridge and chess. He was a very special and unique man with a keen sense of humor.
Charlie had great appreciation for music. He was always a philosopher; he loved reading books and writing stories. He was the founder of the Elk Rapids Great Books Club which met at the Elk Rapids library for the last ten years.

TRAVERSE CITY - Arlene Elizabeth Orth was born on Aug. 20, 1914, to Goldie Wallace Orth, who died in childbirth, and Josiah Orth, who died when Arlene was nine. She was raised by relatives, attended Buffalo, N.Y., Public Schools through the ninth grade, and came of age in the Great Depression.
She began work at age 16, in Pontiac, where she met Walter Alfred Kinch, with whom she was united in marriage in 1931. Theirs was a lifelong love; Arlene was deeply devoted to Walter, as he had been to her. She was a widow for the last 37 years of her life.
The couple lived in Rochester, Mich., and Mt. Pleasant, settling finally in Traverse City, in 1948.
A daughter, Sarah Elizabeth, died in 1937, at age two-and-a-half. A son, Richard (Linda Stengel) Kinch, was born in 1937, and a daughter, Catherine (Kenneth) Hamilton, in 1939. The former lives in Racine, Wis., the latter in Traverse City. Arlene had lived with Catherine since 1999.
Arlene worked for 26 years as a Licensed Psychiatric Practical Nurse at the Traverse City State Hospital, retiring in 1975. She was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church, which she regarded with great satisfaction, and which regarded her with kindness and attention.
Besides the pleasure she took in her children, she was a happy grandparent to Frank Hardy of Traverse City, and Matthew (Angel) Sullivan of Jackson, Miss., Kimberly (Eric) Miller of Newberg, Ore., and Steven (Jeri) Hamilton of Beaverton, Ore., Judith (Mark Smithivas) Kinch of Chicago, and Rachael (Mark Kangas) Kinch, Claudio (Enid) Ramos, and Luis (Erika) Gonzales of Racine, Wis. Several great-grandchildren survive her; Arlene never saw the most recent, Amanda Smithivas, born in December 2003.
She is also survived by a nephew, Jack Potter, and his family, of Ontario, Canada.
Besides her husband, Walter, who died in 1967, her half-brother, Hayes, died in 1980. Arlene was grateful for the hospitality and affection extended her by his numerous family, mostly in Texas.
Arlene was also grateful, as is her family, for the care and skill provided by Bortz Health Care Facilities, Munson Medical Center, and the various health care professionals who served her. To the end her intellect was clear, even as she was betrayed by her body.
Visitation will take place this evening, April 29, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Visitation will continue at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 30, 2004, at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. The Rev. Tamara Williams will officiate. Following cremation, burial will take place at Mt. Avon Cemetery in Rochester, Mich.
Although Arlene took great pleasure in flowers, her survivors suggest memorials be made, in her name, to Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass Street, Traverse City, MI 49684.
From the earth and grave and dust, The Lord will raise her up, we trust.
