April 30, 2004NMH: Union, hospital make no progressTwo sides agree to another sessionByRecord-Eagle staff writer PETOSKEY-The latest talks between Northern Michigan Hospital management and striking nurses and their union netted little result. "We're very disappointed that no progress was made toward a contract. No new proposals were submitted," hospital spokesman Thomas Spencer said of the Thursday session. Ted Iorio, attorney for Teamsters Local 406, said negotiations are stalled by management's delays in providing requested data. "They insist on providing information late, or not at all," he said. "It's ongoing, constant. We want to deal with them, but it has all the appearance that they really are not interested in negotiating." The two sides did agree to another negotiating session at a yet unspecified date. Hospital management on Tuesday submitted by certified mail a corrective action plan to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid services, Spencer said. The plan addresses deficiencies in NMH's facility and health care practices identified in recent surveys by state and federal investigators. "We worked hand-in-hand with the state and CMS on developing a response," Spencer said. "Much of it was easily correctable, and was corrected before it was even reported. We are confident our plan will be met with approval." If CMS and the state Department of Community Health approve the hospital's correction plan, state surveyors will visit the hospital later to confirm the plan is implemented as proposed.
