August 9, 2004Teen's relatives cope with his comaTRAVERSE CITY (AP) - The family of a 17-year-old car crash victim they initially were told was dead is now trying to pull him out of a coma.Patrick Bement, 17, lies in the intensive care unit at Munson Medical Center. His face is peaceful, as if he's in a deep sleep that he'll wake from at any moment. Not long ago, Siiri Loding-Bement believed she would never talk to her son again, except in prayers and while visiting his grave under a tree in Ada. Now, since learning that Patrick wasn't killed in a crash in northern Michigan, that police had mixed up his identity with his friend, his family has watched and prayed for any sign that he will emerge from a nearly monthlong coma. "At least we've got hope, where we had none before," said his father, Ed Bement, of Grand Rapids Township. Now it appears Patrick is making progress. Although IV tubes still carry nourishment and medicine into both arms, he is breathing on his own and is off life-support.
