CONWAY - Father John Tupper, 75, died suddenly Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at the Augustine Center, in Conway, where he had lived since May of 1999 as a retired priest. Fr. John enjoyed manual labor and had been cutting down some trees in the morning. Apparently, he took a nap in the early afternoon of Tuesday and died of a heart attack quite peacefully. Fr. John will be remembered for his kindness, generosity and sensitivity to the needs of people. He had previously served many parishes in the Grand Traverse area, including Lake Leelanau, Gills Pier, Northport, and Empire, as well as serving as an associate pastor at Immaculate Conception in Traverse City. Most recently, he had helped out at St. Francis in Petoskey, as well as caring for the sick in the Petoskey area. Fr. John's special talent and gift was his sensitivity and ability to listen to the needs of the elderly and sick. Where there was pain, hurt, anxiety, worry or fear, Fr. John would be there with an encouraging word and a brief prayer service that would put everything into perspective. He could be seen at our own Munson Medical Center, at any hour of the day or night, assisting a patient, their spouse or family members. He would do this, even in the winter, though he lived in Empire or Lake Leelanau. He was known to take any money that he received for his services, add to it, and give it to someone in more need of it. There are those who would say that Fr. John worked miracles for those who were sick. There are those who experienced those miracles. Services for Fr. John were held at the Sacramentine Monastery, in Conway, on Friday, July 30, 2004, and Saturday, July 31. Mass was held at St. Stanislaus, in Wyandotte, on Aug. 2, with burial in Lincoln Park. Fr. John was strong in his support for the right to life, beginning from the moment of conception, to the last breath that a person would take. He witnessed, experienced and cherished the value and dignity of every human being. In memory of Fr. John, support Right to Life and make the lives of the living a bit happier. Reach out and love your children, parents and spouses.
