August 21, 2004ObituariesLYNN R. TRENTHAM, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004, while at home. Arrangements are pending at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Thomas Charles Strait, 98, a retired beef and fruit farmer of Traverse City, died early Saturday morning, Aug. 21, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. Born Sept. 17, 1905, in East Bay Township, he was the son of Fred William and Minnie (Lambert) Strait. A lifelong resident of the Traverse City area, Tom was a charter member of the East Bay Fire Department and attended the First Baptist Church of Traverse City. He was formerly employed by the Traverse City Iron Works and later supervised an ice operating crew on the Boardman Lake in the 1930s. An avid sportsman, Tom enjoyed watching baseball and particularly enjoyed watching Babe Ruth play in the late 1920s. He is survived by his children, Leo R. (Donna) Strait of Traverse City, Lucille (Jack) Robbins of Traverse City, Linda Pickard of Grand Rapids and LeRoy (Nancy) Strait of Montague; a daughter-in-law, Betty Strait of Traverse City; a sister, Margaret Tharp of Traverse City; 16 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews . Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Gwendolyn, on Aug. 11, 1983; a son, Edward G. Strait, on June 25, 1991; a sister, Hazel Roush, on Sept. 28, 1999. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Tuesday, Aug. 24, 2004, from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Wednesday, Aug. 25, 2004, at 11 a.m. Pastor Tom Mansfield and Pastor Glen Walters will officiate the service. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. In remembrance, memorials may be directed to the First Baptist Church or to the East Bay Volunteer Fire Department. EDGEWOOD, N.M. - Lois (Carmien) Johnson, formerly of Traverse City, passed away on Aug. 14, 2004, in Edgewood, N.M. She was born on July 15, 1924. Lois moved to California in 1969, earned an undergraduate degree in school counseling and a graduate degree in school psychometrics. She worked as a school psychometrist, in Parker, Ariz., until her retirement. Diagnosed with cancer in June, she was able to remain fairly comfortable at her daughter's home until she passed away in her bed, surrounded by family. She is survived by her daughter, Shelley (Patrick Sr.) Roberts; son, Dr. Bill (Bernadette Blaine-Johnson) Johnson; five grandchildren, Andrea Johnson, Patrick Roberts Jr., Shayna Roberts, Dorothy Johnson, and Wilson Johnson; sister, Delight Farah; and a number of nieces and nephews who have always been very kind to her. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, Vern Johnson; parents, Earl and Emma Carmien; son, Jeffery Johnson; grandson, Leif Johnson; brothers, Aubry and Lloyd Carmien; sisters, Vera Armstrong, Beatrice Collins and Elizabeth LaFreniere. "If it's true that all families have guardian angels, then surely, Grandma, our angel is you." She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Memorial services were held on Friday Aug. 20, 2004, at 7 p.m., at the Restoration Church in Edgewood, N.M. PEORIA, Ariz. - Doris Jean Tanis Johnson, 75, of Peoria, Ariz., formerly of Traverse City, died Aug. 9, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. She is survived by her loving husband of four years, Alan Johnson; daughters, Nancy (Rick) Weiler of Traverse City and Debra (Jon) Hobson of Peoria, Ariz.; son, Joseph (Lori) Tanis of Traverse City; stepdaughters, Denise (Bill) Wise of Minn. and Shari Johnson of Ariz.; stepson, Todd (Heidi) Johnson of Minn.; grandchildren, Ron (Theresa) and Paula Jean Weiler, Erik (Jaime) and A.J. Hobson and Jonah and Joshua Tanis; step-grandchildren, Logan and Emile Johnson; great-grandchildren, Mikah and Adam Hobson; brother, Charles Boonstra of Tenn.; sister, Anna Mae (Dan) Johnson of Ariz. and Mich.; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Dori, as her friends affectionately called her, was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; one sister; and grandson, Billy Weiler. A prayer service was held on Aug. 13, 2004, in Arizona. TRAVERSE CITY - Rose Marie Wilson departed this life Aug. 19, 2004, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions, surrounded by her family and close friends. Rose was born June 1, 1923, to Charles and Wahnetta (Robbins) Ockert, in Traverse City. She graduated from Traverse City High School in 1941. Following her heart, she married George B. Wilson on Aug. 2, 1941. Together, they raised seven daughters and two sons. Many remember Rose for her generosity and eternal optimism. Rose's caring heart left no one wanting for a safe roof, warm meal or hot coffee. Rose opened her arms and her home, and often, her oven by baking pies for those who were in need. To this day, her children, and all whom Rose met, carry with them that giving spirit and extreme optimism. Rose also gave to others by working in numerous waitressing jobs, where she enjoyed helping others by serving them and sharing with them. She touched many lives during her, and George's, 10 years spent in Washington state. Other highlights of Rose's working years include a number of factory jobs where she made many friends who remember her bright smile. During their years together, George and Rose were actively involved in the National Arabian Horse Association, and they also bred and raised Arabian horses. Rose also enjoyed keeping a flower garden. But above all, Rose cherished the years and the memories made with her family and friends. Rose will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her children, Beverly Wilson Causey of Longs, S.C., Barbara and Rob Trevena of Athens, Ga., Benjamin and Rev. Meg Wilson of Evart, Carol and Kip Newell and Kay and Greg Lyon, all of Kingsley, Gary and Christine Wilson of Kalkaska, Linda and Dave Bugai, Wendy and Gary Warren and Deb and Dave Sexton, all of Traverse City. She will also be missed by her 51 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two siblings, Margaret Nelson and Albert (Irene) Ockert; a sister-in-law, Fern Luper; a special aunt, Sadie Milks; as well as many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and other people she touched during her 81 years. Rose will join her husband; parents; an infant sister, Barbara Joan; a grandson, Cory Wilson; four brothers-in-law; and two sisters-in-law, who predeceased her. The caring attention of the special CENAs and nursing staff at the Grand Traverse Pavilions will always be remembered as an important part of Rose's last years. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 22 , 2004, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, Aug. 23, with the Rev. SAGINAW - Mrs. Esther Lorraine Paquette, 71, passed away Thursday, Aug. 19, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center Cooper, after an extended illness. Born April 19, 1933, in Saginaw, she was the daughter of the late Conrad and Mary (Fries) Reisig. She was formerly married to Jack R. Paquette of Saginaw. Mrs. Paquette was a former resident of Omena and Northport. She had been employed by the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. Esther was of the Lutheran faith. Surviving are one daughter and three sons, Renee' Paquette of Saginaw, Matthew Paquette, Jason Paquette of Shelton, Wash., Craig Paquette of Biloxi, Miss.; five grandchildren, Stephanie, Chantal, Nicholas, Michelle and Cody Paquette; her sister, Clara, and husband, Kenneth Gulliver of Saginaw; three aunts, Lucille Vasold of Westland, Alvina Reitler and Catherine Blake, both of Saginaw; and many nieces and nephews. Esther was preceded in death by her brother, Donald Reisig. Honoring Mrs. Paquette's wishes, cremation has taken place and no services will be held. Arrangements are by the Snow Funeral Home in Saginaw. TRAVERSE CITY - Sara Marie Anderson, 57, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. Born April 3, 1947, in Marshall Town, Iowa, she was the daughter of the late Stanley and Erna (Wiebold) Anderson. A memorial service will be held at Bethlehem Lutheran Church on Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at 11 a.m. The Rev. Dr. David Gabel will officiate the services. After cremation, burial will be in Brundage Cemetery in Interlochen. For those desiring, memorials may be directed to the Women's Resource Center. FARMINGTON HILLS - Mrs. Zacharias, 87, passed away Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, at the Botsford Commons in Farmington Hills. She was born June 16, 1917, in Bay County, to the late Paul and Hermania (Materka) Moncman. She worked for NBD Bank, in Detroit, and later for H & R Block, in Traverse City, before her retirement. Sophia is survived by two children, Ralph Rinness of Florida and Barbara Brousseau of Westland; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anna Moncman and Elizabeth Gladdin; and two brothers, Paul and John Moncman. Sophia was predeceased by three husbands, Ralph Rinness, Steven Marker and Wally Zacharias. She was also predeceased by three sisters, Mary Cabala, Frances Johnston and Agnes Roble; and four brothers, Steve, Charles, Roudolph and Edward Moncman. Friends may call on Sunday, Aug. 22, 2004, from 2 to 9 p.m., and on Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, after 9 a.m., at the Ambrose Funeral Home, 1200 Garfield Ave., Bay City, MI 48708, phone number (989) 895-9601. A funeral service will be held on Monday, Aug. 23, at 10 a.m., also at the funeral home. SUTTONS BAY - Mary Joanne Chamberlain, 78, of Suttons Bay, died on Saturday, Aug. 21, 2004. Born May 3, 1926, in Addison, she was the daughter of Henry and Cecil (Sanford) Dillon. On June 5, 1948, in Addison, she married Robert John Chamberlain, former Lansing school superintendent, who survives. Mary attended Eastern Michigan University. She began teaching home economics in Jerome, where she also coached the girl's basketball team. Mary also taught in Yale, Michigan, at Sexton High School in Lansing for two years and was a counselor at Dwight Rich High School. Mary was a volunteer with the Sparrow Hospital auxiliary for 25 years, a member of the Central United Methodist Church in Lansing for 20 years and a past president of PEO. She was also a member of the Friendly Garden Club and a member of the Suttons Bay Congregational Church for 20 years. Mary was beloved by her family and many friends. She was dedicated to her family, home and community and touched the lives of those she met through her thoughtfulness. She was a lifelong gardener. She is survived by her three children, Julie (Howard) Chamberlain-Wetters, Todd (Debby) Chamberlain and Susan (Stephen) Salisbury; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Dick Dillon and Jim Dillon; and a sister, Helen Youdes. Visitation will be today, Aug. 22, 2004, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Martinson Funeral Home. A service of tribute and celebration will be held on Monday, Aug. 23, 2004, at 4 p.m., at the Suttons Bay Congregational Church, with the Rev. James Bendig officiating. Memorial contributions may be considered to the Suttons Bay Congregational Church or the PEO program for continuing education. Arrangements are by the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay.
