HAMILTON, N.Y. - JoAnn Hoehler Linsley passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, after a yearlong battle with cancer. JoAnn was born on May 25, 1930, in Toledo, Ohio. After summering in Traverse City for many years, JoAnn and her family moved here permanently when she was 13. She graduated from Traverse City High School in 1948, and received a degree in education from the University of Colorado. After college, JoAnn returned to Traverse City, where, in 1954, she met and married high school classmate, Robert Linsley. When Robert was offered a position at Colgate University, they moved to Hamilton, N.Y. JoAnn continued to spend her summers at the family's cottage in Acme. JoAnn Linsley is best remembered for her years of teaching at Hamilton Central School, where, over the years, she taught kindergarten, fourth grade, pre-first and first grade. She was a natural teacher, always teaching, always learning, always questioning. As teenagers, this got very annoying on long trips! But her kids learned an amazing amount. JoAnn loved to travel. She traveled with her husband on sabbaticals throughout Europe with three young children in tow, and to Asia and Australia with three teens in tow. After retirement, JoAnn often went on Elder Hostel trips both in the U.S. and abroad, biking in Holland, Germany, France and England, hiking in Italy and Mexico, and watching polar bears in Churchill, Manitoba. All of her trips were carefully researched beforehand. A favorite story was, while in Italy, she got a taxi to take her to a small museum. The taxi driver had never heard of it. JoAnn told him where it was and how to get there. It was not unusual for her to toss her tent, sleeping bag and dogs in the car and take off cross-country. When asked if she was afraid about traveling alone, she replied that her great-grandmother had left Bohemia in her late teens, made her way to the German coast, came by steam ship to New York, and from there to Michigan, all on her own. If her ancestor could do all that, JoAnn said, then she could certainly travel around her own country alone. During this last long year battling cancer, JoAnn's only complaint was that her family would not give her back her car keys. JoAnn is survived by her husband, Robert Linsley, and their three children, David, Barbara and Christopher; and by her brother, Richard S. Hoehler, and his family. Her two dogs and one very elderly cat also survive her. A memorial service will be held Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at 7 p.m., at the Colgate University Chapel House. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Traverse City Public Library or a library of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Burgess & Tedesco Funeral Home, 25 Broad St., Hamilton, N.Y. NORTHPORT - Donald J. Though he works hard every day, He will find time to fix a toy, Or teach a child to pray. He has a patient, compassionate ear And a word of sound advice. He puts family needs before his own, Though it cost a sacrifice. He knows when to admonish, Yet he knows how to forgive. He points his children to the gospel As the guide by which to live. You'll know a Christian father, For his children all are glad To have him for a father And proud to call him Dad." --Ramona K.
