Arrangements are by the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord. ELIDA BEARSS, 89, of Saginaw, formerly of Frederic, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, in Saginaw. Visitation will be Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, from 2 to 7 p.m., at the Sorenson Funeral Home, where a funeral service will be held at 7 p.m. Burial will be in the Oakwood Cemetery. The Sorenson Funeral Home of Grayling is in charge of arrangements. KEVIN DWAYNE CHANEY, 29, of Ann Arbor, formerly of Wolverine, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, in San Bernadino County, Calif. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at 3 p.m., at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, where the family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the time of service. CASIMER F. DEMANSKI, 87, of Frankfort, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long Term Care. Visitation will be today, Dec. 9, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes. A funeral Mass will be held Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at 11 a.m., at St. Ann Catholic Church, with Father Ray Cotter officiating. The Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements. MARCIA J. HESCOTT, 68, of Frankfort, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital. Arrangements are pending and a complete obituary will follow in Friday's edition of the Record-Eagle. The Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements. GRAND RAPIDS - Mrs. Juanita P. McLaughlin, 86, of Grand Rapids, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004. Juanita is survived by her daughter, Michele and Charles Ream; her son, J. Pat and Valerie McLaughlin; grandsons, Elliott and Patrick McLaughlin; sisters, Gladys Taylor and Marjorie Valkanet; and many loving nieces and nephews. She will be greatly missed by her family and special friend, Father Keith Lowe. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. McLaughlin in 1972 after 30 years of marriage; parents, Donald and Bernice Parks; brother, Richard Parks. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at 11 a.m., at St. Stephen's Catholic Church, 750 Gladstone Ave. SE, East Grand Rapids, MI 49506. Father Paul Milanowski will serve as celebrant. The family will receive relatives and friends for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Sherwood Cemetery. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff at Luther Woods Assisted Living Center, Elders Helpers and also Spectrum Health Butterworth 6th Floor Progressive Care Unit. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society. TRAVERSE CITY - Linda M. Stachnik, 49, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at her home surrounded by her loving family. A lifelong resident of Traverse City, she was born in Traverse City on Aug. 20, 1955, the daughter of Alfred "Bud" and Caroline (Weber) Largent. She married Carl E. Stachnik on Aug. 30, 1975, in Traverse City. Linda was a 1973 graduate of St. Francis High School. She worked in store management for both Tom's and Prevo's Markets, and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. She enjoyed reading, gardening, bowling, fishing, painting, jigsaw and word puzzles, and laughing with her family. Linda is survived by her husband of 29 years, Carl E. Stachnik of Traverse City; son, Toby Stachnik of Traverse City; daughter, Kallika Stachnik of Traverse City; parents, Alfred "Bud" and Caroline Largent of Traverse City; two brothers, Edward L. Largent and Robert L. Largent, both of Traverse City; sister, Sherri (Jeff) DeRushia of Traverse City; grandmother, Cecilia (Bert "Bob") Smith of Lime Lake; mother-in-law, Susie Stachnik of Traverse City; sister-in-law, Mary Ann (Bruce) Sampo of Jenison; brother-in-law, Roger (Ellen) Stachnik of Traverse City; and five nieces and nephews, Dan and Corey DeRushia, Jeff and Chad Sampo, and Kyle Stachnik. She will also be missed by her dog, Jazz. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Alfred Largent Sr.; grandparents, Edward and Rosa Weber; and father-in-law, Edward B. Stachnik. Visitation will be today, Dec. 9, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., from the Covell Funeral Home, where a rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at 11 a.m., at St. Francis Catholic Church, with Father Ken Stachnik as celebrant. Additional visitation will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Linda's garden fund, Mass Intentions or for lung cancer research. Arrangements have been entrusted to Covell Funeral Homes in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Raymond White, 65, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Munson Hospice House. Henry was born on Dec. 27, 1938, in Gladwin. He graduated from St. John's High School and attended Paul Smith College in New York. He has been a resident of Traverse City for the past 35 years, and is a member of Grace Episcopal Church. Henry served in the United States Army in the 1960s. Henry is survived by his twin brother, Enoch T. (Tom) White of Lansing and his sister-in-law, Jane Penton White of Lansing; and several nieces and nephews. Henry was preceded in death by his parents, Enoch "Ink" and Barbara White of St. Johns; and his brother, Jonathon R. White of Lansing. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank caregivers and special friends for their loving care and support over the years, including Sue Hughes, Jessie and John Hall, Jacqueeda Gabourie, Chuck Carsten, Jean Rhodes, and Ross and Helen Childs. Special tribute must also be given to all of those at Hospice House who provided comfort and solace to Henry and his family. Visitation will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home today, Dec. 9, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial services will be held Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at 12:30 p.m., also at the funeral home. Father D. Edward Emenheiser of Grace Episcopal Church will officiate. Memorials may be directed in Henry's name to Munson Hospice House. BENZONIA - Gary Watson, 67, of Benzonia, passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 2004. He was born Sept. 6, 1937, in Grawn, the son of Linton and Ethelyn Watson. Mr. Watson was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing. He and his wife were the founders and owners of Silver Orchard, Inc. Gary is survived by his wife, Sheryl, whom he married on April 19, 1963; five children, Brenda (Gary) Weisenberge of Ovid, Mark (Chris) Miller of Kingsley, Gary (Susan) Watson II of Interlochen, William Watson of Interlochen, and Jayne (Lonny) Radtke of Interlochen; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; mother, Ethelyn; sister, Marlene (Elwin) Evans; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; and three children, Joseph, Chad and Amy Jo Watson. Funeral services will be conducted today, Dec. 9, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, with Pastor Dan Ingersol officiating. Interment will be in the Maple Grove Cemetery in Grawn. Memorial contributions may be considered to the American Red Cross. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah is in charge of the arrangements. ANN ARBOR - Mike Howard Laverty shared his gift of life with others through his music, his love of the outdoors, his passion for helping youth and his determination to be forever youthful himself. He had been a student at Angell Elementary, St. Francis of Assisi School, Greenhills School, Albion College, Eastern Michigan University, the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS), and was an active member of the Alpha Pi Chapter of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He composed poetry, music and lyrics, recording several CDs and tapes. He enjoyed playing his music with and for his friends. He was an avid and skillful sailor, skier, rock climber, mountain biker, disc golfer and explorer. He traveled to Alaska, the western United States and Europe. He relished the freedom of finding his own trail in nature. He spent many years as a camper, counselor and assistant director at Camp Hayo-Went-Ha on Torch Lake in northern Michigan. There, Mike developed his gift of mentoring young people, especially those on a troubled path. He helped many see their own potential for self-development through his listening, encouragement, inspiration and coaching. He was a defining example of what loyal friendship meant and was loved by many who will find it difficult to fill the void of his absence. He is survived by his mom and dad, Suzanne and Bob Laverty; his sister, Sarah Grace Laverty; and his special dog, Ripley. The Creator bestows upon us the special gift of life. Each of us creates our own path through life to honor that gift. The symphony of Mike's life was played to the lyrics and music that he wrote for himself, to love and be of service to others. A memorial service will be held on Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Muehlig Funeral Chapel, 403 S. Fourth Ave., Ann Arbor, Mich. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service. Torch Lake Drive, Central Lake, MI 49622, or the Sigma Chi Foundation, in memory of Michael Howard Laverty, Alpha Pi Chapter, 1714 Hinman Avenue, Evanston, IL 60201. "Camp days, dear old Torch is blue ... we recall them all ... in the sloping pine hills ... in the dining hall, nare will we forget thee ... nor our founders three ... back at Hayo-Went-Ha ... each for all are we." KALKASKA - Max E. McQueen, 82, of Kalkaska, went home to be with our Lord on Tuesday, Dec. 7, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. He was born Dec. 29, 1921, in Muskegon, the adopted son of Asa and Edith McQueen. Max served our country during World War II in the United States Air Force as a B-26 bomber pilot. He flew 55 combat missions and was stationed in Rome-Arno, Southern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. Max retired from Travis Air Force Base in Fairfield, Calif., in July of 1960 and moved to Williamsburg. He went to work managing the Singer Sewing Machine Store in Traverse City for four years. In 1964 he went to work as a salesman for Joslin Chevrolet, Inc. until 1979, when he started as manager of the Kalkaska Pine Grove Mobile Home Lot, retiring in 1989. Max married Marge "Keene" Kotesky on Dec. 2, 1985, at Sheppard Air Force Base in Wichita Falls, Texas. Max was a member of the Kalkaska United Methodist Church, Masonic Blue Lodge of Acme, and was a 32nd degree Scottish Rights Mason, Shriner and life member of the Traverse City Lodge 2780. Surviving Max are his wife, Marge McQueen; children, Max E. (Sandra) McQueen of Wasilla, Alaska, and Patricia A. (Jimmie) Crumpton of Many, La.; stepchildren, Bryan R. (Dru) Keene of Traverse City, David L. (Wendy) Keene of Bellaire, Debra A. Branam of Benzie and Todd K. (Patty Prosser) Keene of Novi; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. Preceding Max in death was his first wife of 42 years, Reba J. McQueen. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Kalkaska United Methodist Church, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Robert Stark will officiate. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made for the sound and projections system of the Kalkaska United Methodist Church, 2525 Beebe Road, Kalkaska, MI 49646. Arrangements were made by the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
