Obituaries


      VERA E. BARE, 95, of Flushing, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Willowbrook Manor in Flint.
      Friends may visit the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home on Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at 3 p.m., also at the funeral home. Interment will be in the Inland Township Cemetery.
      The Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
     
      FRANCES A. COX, 88, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004.
      Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      JIM PORTER, 78, of Lake Leelanau, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004.
      A celebration of Jim's life will be held Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004, at 2 p.m., at the Leelanau Community Cultural Center's Old Art Building, 111 S. Main St., Leland.
      The family has entrusted arrangements to Oak Grove Cremation Center.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Margaret M. "Peggy" Lucier, 78, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Munson Hospice House. Formerly of Palatine, Ill. and Jackson, she had been a resident of Traverse City since 2003.
      During the 1970s and 1980s, Peggy enjoyed working at Jacobsons.
      Born June 1, 1926, in Bloomington Ind., she was the daughter of George and Edna (Melick) Clemmer. On March 9, 1946, in Spencer, Ind., she married Ralph A. Lucier, who survives.
      Also surviving is her son, Dr. Thomas (Suzanne) Lucier of Chapel Hill, N.C.; daughter; Beverly (Dr. S. Lee) Warnaar of Duck Lake; sister, Martha Laubsher of Fort Myers, Fla.; her four beloved grandchildren, Sean, Christian, Andrew and Alex; and several nephews and nieces.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Terrence in 2004; sister, Mary Babbs; and brother, George Clemmer.
      Family services are being planned and will be held in the spring.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Munson Hospice House, 1105 Sixth St., Traverse City, MI 49684.
      Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Rev. Dr. John Wesley Bishop, 77, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2004, in Ft. Myers, Fla. Born Nov. 6, 1927, in Kingston, N.Y., he was the son of Bertrand Bishop and Emma Schoonmaker.
      He graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass. in 1945, and received a bachelor's of arts degree from Yale University in 1950. He earned a master's of divinity from the Virginia Theological Seminary in 1954, and a doctorate of ministry from the Colgate Rochester Divinity School (Bexley Hall) in 1977.
      Reverend Bishop served in the United States Marine Corps from 1947 to 1949.
      He was ordained an Episcopal Priest in 1954 in Cincinnati, Ohio, and served as Rector at St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Cincinnati, Ohio from 1956 to 1971. He was on the staff of Coventry Cathedral as Industrial Chaplain in England in 1967, was Rector at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Rochester, N.Y. from 1972 to 1982 and Rector at Christ Episcopal Church in Greenwich, Conn. from 1982 to 1992. He retired to Omena and Ft. Myers, Fla. in 1992.
      In addition to his life's work in building Christian community in the parishes he served, he was passionate in promoting interfaith dialogue, most importantly, his work with Rabbi Hillel Silverman of Temple Shalom in Greenwich, Conn., which included authorship of "The Jewish Christian Connection - An Interfaith Experience."
      He delighted in creating contemplative garden spaces using stones from Grand Traverse Bay and loved playing tennis and sailing.
      He is survived by his devoted wife of 52 years, Jo-Ann; four sons, John, Timothy, Matthew and Christopher; and brothers, Bruce and Terry.
      Reverend Bishop was predeceased by his brother, Bertrand.
      A memorial service will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at 11 a.m., at Christ Episcopal Church in Greenwich, Conn. Internment will follow the service.
