      KATHLEEN PATRICIA BUCHANAN, 40, of Kalkaska, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at her home.
      A funeral service will be held Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at 3 p.m., at the Wolfe Funeral Home, with visitation from 1 p.m. until the time of service.
      Arrangements are by the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
     
      L. BUD COULTER, 83, of Central Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at his home.
      Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, where a Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. Memorial services will take place Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at 2 p.m., at the First Congregational Church in Central Lake.
     
      PEARL MARIE COUTURIER, 91, of Traverse City, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      A full obituary will be in a future edition of the Record-Eagle.
      Arrangements are pending at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay.
     
      FLORENCE M. DOUGLAS, 84, of Central Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
      Visitation will be today, Dec. 12, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services w ill be held on Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home.
     
      EAST JORDAN - Joseph Frank Bender III, 61, of East Jordan, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at the Charlevoix Area Hospital.
      Joe was born June 13, 1943, in Manistee, the son of Joseph Frank and Virginia (Wasson) Bender II. On Jan. 8, 1966, he married Sherry Crandall on Old Mission Peninsula.
      Joe was a Realtor and developer in the Traverse City area. He owned and operated Bender Construction, the Powder Horn Gun Store and the Sundowner Drive-In of Traverse City. He founded and co-owned the Flap Jack Shack in Traverse City, and built and operated restaurants in Florida.
      A member of Ducks Unlimited and Whitetails Unlimited, he enjoyed working in his shop on cars, his hunting and fishing trips to the Upper Peninsula, and he treasured his grandchildren.
      Joe is survived by his wife, Sherry of East Jordan; daughters, Wendy (John) LaBonte of Traverse City, Melissa (Timothy Schut) Bender, Gretchen (David Bacchus) Bender, all of East Jordan; son, Joseph J. Bender of East Jordan; grandchildren, Kayla, Kaycee, Jordyn, Noah, Timmy, Elizabeth and Natalee, all of East Jordan; nephew, Marc Bender of East Jordan; brother, James (Milly) Bender of Traverse City; and stepfather, James Burley of East Jordan.
      A private memorial service will be held for family members at the Lighthouse Missionary Church in East Jordan on Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004.
      Joe's family suggests memorials to Friends of the Jordan River Watershed, 800 Water St., East Jordan, MI 49727.
      The Winchester Funeral Home of Charlevoix is serving the family.
     
      FLUSHING - Vera E. Bare, 95, of Flushing, died Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at Willowbrook Manor in Flint. She was born on April 16, 1909, in Honor, to Joseph and Savnia Hackney.
      Vera married Reverend John I. Bare on May 28, 1927, in Lake Ann. Through the years, they were Pastors of Wesleyan Churches in Saginaw, Flint and Lake Ann, and in Pensacola, Fla. Vera ran a bookstore and arranged speakers at Holiness Campground in Lakeland, Fla.
      She is survived by son, Dan (Chiho) Bare of Flushing; grandchildren, Daniel E. Jr. (Shyla) Bare of Edinbrough, Scotland, Deanne Jo Foster of Clio, Debra Cochran of Midland and John I. Bare of Flushing; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by husband, Reverend John I. Bare, on April 11, 1992; grandson, Douglas John Bare; brothers, Samuel and John Fisher, and Elmo Hackney; sister, Rilla Link; and niece, Beulah Brown (her best friend).
      Friends may visit the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home today, Dec. 12, 2004, from 4 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, also at the Benzonia Chapel, with Zane and Michael Gray officiating. Interment will be in the Inland Township Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Willowbrook Manor in Flint.
      The Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
     
      SOUTHFIELD - Marvin Kahn, 87, of Southfield, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004, at Providence Hospital.
      Before World War II, he led a band called Tommy Marvin, which played around the Detroit area. In 1939, he had a syndicated radio program featuring Tommy Marvin and his Orchestra.
      Marvin served his country in the United States Army during World War II. While overseas, he served in the Army Band.
      Upon returning home, he joined the family business as a merchant at Stuarts Ladies Apparel stores in Dearborn, Wayne and Lincoln Park.
      In the late 1960s, he returned to playing music at The Caucus Club and The London Chop House. He recorded four different albums of original music with his partner, Keith Vreeland.
      Survivors include his wife, Gloria Kahn; daughters, Terry (Michael) Tarnow, Patty (Irving) Yellin and Amy Kahn; five grandchildren; and two sisters.
      Funeral services will be held Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at 10: 30 a.m., at the Ira Kaufman Chapel in Southfield, (800) 325-7105. Burial will take place in Clover Hill Park Cemetery in Birmingham.
      Memorials may be considered to the Michigan Legacy Art Park, 12500 Crystal Mountain Dr., Thompsonville, MI 49683.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Marie A. Luehr, 95, of Traverse City, passed away Nov. 25, 2004, at Munson Medical Center.
      Marie was born Aug. 1, 1909, on a farm in Allen County, Ohio, to Albert and Matilda (Stickey) Miller.
      A bookkeeper at Wilson Furniture for many years, she loved her family, friends and flowers.
      Marie is survived by a grandson, Chris Kozacek; great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan L. Luehr; and her brothers and sisters, Dora, Henry, John, Thelma and Don.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the oncology department at Munson Medical Center.
      Arrangements were entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Frank A. Powers, 71, of Traverse City, passed away Thursday, Dec. 9, 2004, at his home.
      Frank was born Nov. 29, 1933, to Clifford and Genevieve (Perrou) Powers in Clare. He married Vergie Elsie (DeJonge) Fitzhugh on June 30, 1986, in Traverse City.
      He was an active member of the VFW Post 2780 in Traverse City. He loved riding his bicycle.
      Frank is survived by his wife; and two sons, Melvin and Franklin Powers.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings.
      Visitation will take place Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 14, 2004, at 11 a.m., also at the funeral home, with Major Thomas Riggs officiating.
      In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the American Lung Association.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - William Robert Smith, 89, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2004, at Munson Medical Center.
      Mr. Smith was born in Detroit on June 30, 1915, the son of William F. and Ida May (Kuehn) Smith. He married Ellen Maurine Boone on Aug. 27, 1946, at Long Lake, and she preceded him in death Aug. 3, 2002.
      A veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army, Mr. Smith had been a farmer, and had also been employed at Cone Gear prior to retirement.
      He was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church and the Multiple Sclerosis Support Group.
      Survivors include his children, Sally Berlin and Glenn Smith; and sister, Ruth DeBoer. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
      In addition to his wife, Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Frederick.
      Family graveside services were held at Oakwood Cemetery with his nephew, the Rev. Ted Smith, officiating.
      Because no formal services were held, the family asks that Mr. Smith be remembered through a memorial contribution to the Grand Traverse Pavilions rather than floral tributes.
      The family is being served by The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
