December 17, 2004ObituariesTRAVERSE CITY - Eva May MacGregor, 87, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, at her home. Eva was born in Grand Rapids on May 19, 1917, the daughter of Carl and Mabel (Haven) Seltzer, and had made her home in Traverse City since 1949. On Dec. 5, 1985, she married Duncan MacGregor at First Congregational Church in Traverse City. Eva attended West Bay Covenant Church. In the 1950s, when the church was young, her passion for the youth of the church was evident in her involvement with their programs at that time. An avid golfer, she was a member of the Traverse City Country Club, where she won her flight on numerous occasions over the years. She enjoyed skiing and was an avid sailor, as well as enjoying playing duplicate bridge with her friends. Eva was an outstanding cook and enjoyed hosting her friends in her home. She also enjoyed meeting with her friends every Friday night at the Elks. Eva and her husband, “Mac,” enjoyed traveling all over the world, visiting many wonderful places. Eva will always be remembered for her gracious and kind personality. Survivors include her son, James Palmer of Traverse City; her granddaughter, Julie (Trevar) Bennington of Lynchburg, Va., and her great-granddaughter, Abbigail Marie Bennington, also of Lynchburg; her stepchildren, Marilyn (Cameron) Buchanan of Venice, Fla., and Charles (Lois) MacGregor of Mt. Pleasant; 12 step-grandchildren and 21 step-great-grandchildren; her sisters, Jane Loye of Spring Lake and Myke Gerrish of Edina, Minn.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Duncan M. MacGregor, on Oct. 7, 2004; her parents; a brother, James Seltzer of Grand Blanc; and her husbands, Malcolm H. Palmer and Paul M Beardsley. Memorial services are being planned for the spring of 2005 at West Bay Covenant Church in Traverse City. Memorial contributions may be directed to West Bay Covenant Church Youth Activities. The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. BEULAH - Richard J. Novak, 62, of Beulah, passed away on Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at home. He was born Sept. 1, 1942, in South Bend, Ind., the son of Charles and Patrina (Holmes) Novak. Mr. Novak is survived by his special companion, Tawny Slade of Beulah; his nine children, Charlene Novak of Interlochen, Sheri (Fred) Vollmorhausen of Battle Creek, Cindy of Tennessee, Brian Scott Novak of Florida, Richard (Rebecca) Novak of Monona, Wis., Michael Novak of Bowling Green, Ky., Jeremy Novak of Beulah, Amber Marie Slade of Interlochen and Eric John Novak-Slade of Frankfort; many loving grandchildren; and his father, Charles (Thelma) Novak of Frankfort. He was preceded in death by his mother. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. today, Dec. 17, 2004, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, with visitation to be held Friday from 11 a.m. until the time of the services. Interment will be in the Gilmore Twp. Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice; envelopes will be available at the funeral home. The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Memorial services for CORA B. BELL, who died Dec. 14, 2004, will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Visitation will take place beginning at 12:30 p.m. ROBERT EDWARD COCKING, 57, of Traverse City, died unexpectedly Saturday afternoon, Dec. 11, 2004. Mr. Cocking honorably served his country during the Vietnam War. In remembrance of Robert, funeral services will be held at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 19, with full military honors under the auspices of the Cherryland VFW Post #2780. Friends may call at the time of the services. RUSSELL T. GUILD, 81, of Central Lake, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. Visitation will take place this evening, Dec. 17, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, also at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. JOSEPH E. HARPER, 76, of Manistee, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004. Visitation will take place Sunday, Dec. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee, where funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 20. DONALD COLE LEE, 76, of Central Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, at home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 20, at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes, where the family will receive friends Sunday, Dec. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. ETHEL DELORIS LEWIS, 77, of Eastlake, was welcomed in to the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004. The family will receive friends at Oak Grove Cremation Center this evening, Dec. 17, from 6 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Manistee Assembly of God Church with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. The family has entrusted funeral arrangements to Oak Grove Cremation Center. LARRY SLEEPER, 68, formerly of Elberta, died Thursday morning, Dec. 16, 2004. A memorial gathering will be held at Brady’s Bar in Traverse City Sunday, Dec. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m. A complete obituary will appear in an upcoming edition of the Traverse City Record-Eagle.
