Obituaries


      JANICE APPLEYARD of Frankfort died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at The Maples of Frankfort.
      Graveside services will be held in the spring.
      The Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
     
      GRACE L. BOWERS, 92, of St. Croix Falls, Wis., formerly of Benzonia, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004.
      Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah, with Rev. Floyd Soper officiating. Visitation will be held Sunday from 11 a.m. until the time of service.
      A full obituary will appear in the Sunday edition of the Record Eagle.
      The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
     
      CURT BROWN, 62, of Gaylord, died Friday, Dec. 10, 2004.
      Nelson Funeral Home, Gaylord, is handling arrangements.
     
      KATHY FREDERICK, 54, of Mancelona, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
      Arrangements are pending and will be announced by the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
     
      DEBORAH JOHNSON, 60, of Vanderbilt, formerly of Newberry, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004.
      Nelson Funeral Home, Gaylord, is in charge of arrangements.
     
      WAYMOND KIRK, 71, of Gaylord, died Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004.
      Arrangements are being handled by Nelson Funeral Home, Gaylord.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Evelyn Ethel Kirsch, 89, a resident of Traverse City since 1934, died Wednesday, Dec. 15, 2004, in Davison.
      Evelyn was born in Bessemer, the daughter of Alexander and Elizabeth (Holmquist) Carlson on July 11, 1915. She married William Joseph Kirsch on May 9, 1937, in Bessemer.
      Evelyn had been employed by the Traverse City State Hospital for 28 years, prior to her retirement in 1975. A longtime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Evelyn was very active in the life of the church. She had a tremendous love of music, and enjoying singing, being a member of the church choir and playing the piano by ear. She was a talented artist, enjoying drawing. She also enjoyed bowling and especially playing golf, being rewarded with a hole in one.
      Survivors include her children, Larry (Martha) Kirsch of Bolingbrook, Ill., Sharon Kirsch of Flint and Kathleen McDonnell of Farmington; her grandchildren, Suzanne (Craig) Stephens of Burton, Christine (Michael) Korzetki of Wayne, Noel (Michelle) Kirsch of Hoverton, Pa., and Lance Kirsch of Chicago; her great-grandchildren, Alexandra and Andrew Stephens, and Dylan and Devin Korzetki.
      Also surviving Evelyn are her brothers, Clifford Carlson of Bessemer and Clarence Carlson of Traverse City; and a sister, Elna Cocking of Bessemer.
      Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, William on Sept. 8, 2000; her parents; and her siblings, Elfa Jaquish, Janet Fort , Conrad “Connie” Carlson and Eugene Carlson.
      Visitation will take place at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home this evening, Dec. 18, from 5 until 8 p.m.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 19, at the Funeral Home, with Pastor Robert Carter of Bethlehem Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      The family suggests that memorial contributions be directed to Meals on Wheels or the Area Agency on Aging, both of which allowed Evelyn to stay in her own home these past years.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Larry Sleeper, 68, of Traverse City, formerly of Elberta, died Thursday, Dec. 16, 2004.
      Born Oct. 9, 1936, in Elberta, he was the son of Mildred (Peters) and Ralph Sleeper.
      Larry was loved by family and friends. He was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman.
      A memorial gathering will be held at Brady’s Bar in Traverse City Sunday, Dec. 19, from 2 to 4 p.m.
