Obituaries


      JEANNE GADWA, 75, of Elk Rapids, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004, at home surrounded by her family.
      A complete obituary will be in a future edition of the Record-Eagle.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      SARA G. MAREK, 54, of Bear Lake, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, as a result of an automobile accident.
      Friends may visit Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Arcadia. Cremation will take place following the service.
      The Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes is handling the arrangements.
     
      MILDRED L. PHIPPS, 95, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at Bortz Health Care.
      Cremation has taken place.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell Funeral Home of Traverse City.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Helen Merry Bullington died in Traverse City on Dec. 22, 2004, at the age of 95. She was born in Lincoln, Ill., on Aug. 16, 1909.
      Mrs. Bullington was educated in the public schools of Lincoln, Ill., at Lincoln College and Eureka College in Eureka, Ill., where she received a bachelor's degree in English. She taught English in high schools in Illinois, and also to natives of Cambodia and Zambia when her husband was in foreign service in those countries.
      She was united in marriage to Robert Bullington in 1935. During her lifetime Mrs. Bullington was active in the affairs of churches, schools, clubs and community organizations. She was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. In 1966, she was honored with the Alumni Award of Merit, bestowed by the Alumni Association of Eureka College.
      At the time of her husband's retirement in 1973 as Emeritus Professor of Biological Sciences at Northern Illinois University, the Bullingtons settled in Arkansas. They moved to Michigan in 2000 to be near their son and daughter-in-law.
      She leaves her son, Neal of Traverse City; and her daughter, Anita of Frisco, Colo. Also surviving are two granddaughters, a grandson and a great-grandson.
      Her husband and two younger brothers preceded her in death.
      Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      CROSS VILLAGE - Frank L. "Pine" Shomin, 78, of Cross Village, passed on Tuesday, Dec. 21, 2004, at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey.
      Pine was born Feb. 16, 1926, in Cross Village, the son of Edmund and Angeline (Shagonaby) Shomin. Pine attended school in Cross Village, then married Vivian Yonnott on Aug. 24, 1963, in Peshawbestown. They were married for 41 years until Vivian's death in February of 2003.
      Pine was an activist for Native Americans and their rights. He studied Native American law, International law and treaties for more than 20 years. He also did genealogy for many families and wrote a book on the truth of real traditional ways of past history, which is to be published in 2005. He was very proud of his participation in the longest walk in 1978.
      Pine was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and good friend to those who knew him. He was very devoted to traditional ways and beliefs.
      Survivors include four daughters, Elizabeth Shomin of East Jordan, Christine Loredo of Benzonia, Judy Shomin of Peshawbestown and Therese John-Keller and Phllilip of Cross Village; two sons, Frank J. Shomin of Florida and Pete and Nancy Shomin of Frankfort; 30 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins; three brothers, Albert, Paul and Gordon Shomin; and two sisters, Mable and Mildred Shomin.
      Pine was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Vivian; two daughters, Victoria Sprague and Patricia Shomin; one son, Daniel Shomin; three grandchildren; four brothers, Enos, Edward, Bennet and Richard Shomin; and three sisters, Irene and Mary Shomin and Marie Shananaquet.
      Funeral services will be held today, Dec. 24, 2004, at 2 p.m., at the Charles G. Parks Funeral Home in Petoskey, where friends may call until the time of service. Thomas Teuthorn will officiate. Interment will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery in the spring.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family. Envelopes for memorials are available at the Charles G. Parks Funeral Home in Petoskey.
     
      WILLIAMSBURG - Jack P. Williams, 91, of Williamsburg, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, at his home. Formerly of Peck, he had been a resident of the Williamsburg area since 1975.
      Jack was a licensed plumber in the Peck area and for many years worked for Plumbers Union Local # 98. He was a life member of Custer Lodge # 393 F&AM in Peck, a Boy Scout Troop leader and a member of the Peck Volunteer Fire Department.
      Jack enjoyed hunting, gardening and especially enjoyed working in his grapes, picking 16 bushels this year. His dog, Kate, was a special joy.
      Born June 9, 1913, in Peck, he was the son of Frederick E. and Lillian Maud (Wheeler) Williams. On Aug. 22, 1941, in Ohio, he married Vinetta "Vi" Titus, who survives. Also surviving is son, Mark (Beth) Williams of Williamsburg, daughter, Margaret J. (Jack) Messer of Boyne City; sister, Minnie Clemons of Stockbridge; five grandchildren, Rachel (Matt) Lake, David Williams, Laura Williams, Theresa Weisdorfer and Mathew Messer; one great-grandson, Kemal Weisdorfer; and many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
      He was preceded in death by infant daughter, Linda D. Williams in 1947; one sister; and four brothers.
      Memorial services are being planned and will be held in Peck in the spring. Burial will take place in Elk Township Cemetery in Peck.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Local Volunteer Fire Department of one's choice.
      Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
