December 30, 2004ObituariesCEDAR - Rev. Walter Anthony, 80, of Cedar, passed away at Cornell Hospital in New York City Saturday, Dec. 11, 2004. Fr. Wally was born in Flint, and upon graduating from high school entered Michigan State University. After graduation, he served in World War II in the Navy Air Corps. Fr. Wally entered St. Paul's College in Washington, D.C., and was ordained in 1956 by the late Francis Cardinal Spellman in New York City. He began his ministry serving at the Information Center in Grand Rapids. Several other parish and mission assignments took him to Minnesota, Texas, California, Canada and Rome, Italy. In 1991, Fr. Wally went into senior ministry status and ministered in the Diocese of Gaylord, Leelanau County, and particularly the Holy Rosary Church in Cedar. Fr. Wally is survived by two sisters, Virginia Eitzen of Cedar and Sr. Anne Maslanka of Garfield Heights, Ohio; several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 8 at Holy Rosary Church in Cedar, with the most Rev. Bishop Patrick Cooney officiating. Burial has taken place in Mt. Paul in Oak Ridge, N.J. Memorials may be directed to the Paulist Fathers, 415 W. 59th St., New York, N.Y. 10019. TRAVERSE CITY - Ruben A. DeNoyer, 73, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at Munson Hospice House. A life-long resident of the Grand Traverse area, Ruben worked for the Buckeye Steamship Company and sailed the Great Lakes from 1952 through 1965. He then worked for 27 1/2 years for the City of Traverse City as a carpenter, retiring in September of 1993. He was a member of the Traverse City Masonic Lodge #222 F & AM. Ruben continued to enjoy carpentry work in his shop at home after his retirement. Born Sept. 21, 1931, at the family home in Lake Leelanau, he was the son of Ruben J. and Martha (Kirt) DeNoyer. On Sept. 9, 1961, in Traverse City, he married Mary K. Campbell, who survives. Also surviving is his son, Greg J. DeNoyer of Traverse City; two sisters, Margaret (William) Hahnenberg of Midland and Alice (Hank) Potter of Florida; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Cookie. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Donald in 1972 and James in February of 2004. Memorial services are being planned and will be held in the spring, with date and time to be announced. Memorials may be directed to Munson Hospice House, 1105 Sixth St., Traverse City, MI 49684; or to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. BENZONIA - John Theodore "Ted" Ehman, 82, of Benzonia, died at his home Sunday, Dec. 26, 2004. He was born Feb. 24, 1922, in Benzonia Township, the son of Herman A. and Vesta (Pettitt) Ehman. After graduating from Benzie Central High School in 1939, he worked for Asa Case at the local gas station. He served his country in World War II, stationed in the South Pacific with the U.S. Navy from 1942–45. He met Elizabeth Stout, a WAVE, on the Navy base in Norman, Okla., and they married Sept. 7, 1946. Ted then attended Michigan State University, where he earned a BS degree in mechanical engineering and was also inducted into Tau Beta Pi Honorary Engineering Fraternity. Ted's first professional position was in Albion at Albion Malable Iron Company. In 1956, he joined Dow Chemical Company in Midland and became a registered professional engineer in 1959. While at Dow he was the project engineer for many new Dow plants, including a four-year assignment in Melbourne, Australia. When he returned to the U.S., he accepted a position at the Dow Hanging Rock Technical Center in Ironton, Ohio. Ted retired from Dow in 1986 and moved back to Benzonia, where he became active in the community. He served on the Village of Benzonia Council for many years, and put his engineering skills to use in supervising the replacement of the Benzonia water system in the late 1990s. He also was on the Board of Trustees of the First Congregational Church and was the treasurer of the Mills Community House for several years. Ted was an outgoing person and had a sense of humor enjoyed by most everyone. He thoroughly enjoyed singing and could be found in the tenor section of a community chorus or church choir everywhere he lived. His children have fond memories of helping him learn his songs when he was with the Dow Chorus and can still sing a rousing rendition of "Marching to Pretoria" or "The Gandy Dancer's Ball." While in Australia, Ted took up the fascinating and frustrating game of golf and enjoyed many hours of pleasure on golf courses all over the world. He was also an accomplished amateur finished carpenter, making a grandfather clock for each of his children and a fine hand-crafted heirloom for each of his grandchildren. He also enjoyed sailing on Crystal Lake and hunting in the local area and the Upper Peninsula. Ted was a member of the First Congregational Church of Benzonia, the VFW, Benzie Historical Society and the Elks. He will be sadly missed by his wife of 58 years, Elizabeth (Stout); his children, Gretchen Paupore, Thomas (Patricia) Ehman and Penelope (Ronald) Olson; his grandchildren, Kristina and Jeffery Olson, Carolyn, Jonathan and Susan Ehman and Carin Paupore; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Philip and Harlow; two sisters, Lewella and Winifred; and a son-in-law, Thomas Paupore. Friends may visit Sunday, Jan. 2, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at the Benzonia Congregational Church with Rev. Steve Davidson and Rev. Telfer Mook officiating. Interment will be held at the Benzonia Twp. Cemetery in the spring. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to the Mills Community House Association Restoration in Benzonia; the Benzie Area Historical Society in Benzonia; or First Congregational Church, Benzonia. ELK RAPIDS - Jeanne Gadwa of Elk Rapids passed away at home surrounded by her family Thursday, Dec. 23, 2004. Jeanne was born in Detroit Feb. 19, 1929, the daughter of Charles and Gladys Brown. Jeanne was married to Roland J. Gadwa March 1, 1947, and was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Jeanne was a homemaker until her family was grown, then returned to work in various office-related capacities. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, The Rushlight Club, and Weavers Guild of Traverse City. Her hobbies included weaving, spinning, rug-hooking, knitting, gardening and bird-watching. Throughout her life, Jeanne's passion for all living things was reflected in her care of and love for her many pets and all creatures great and small. She is survived by two sons, Denis (Marcia Robson) Gadwa of London, Ontario, Canada, and Jerry (Cheri) Gadwa of Traverse City; two daughters, Bonnie Gadwa of Lac LaBiche, Alberta, Canada, and Pat (Austin) Garno of Elk Rapids; seven grandchildren, Dylan, Rebecca, Abe, Yvonne, Adam, Kelly and Ben; and a brother, Dr. Thomas F. Brown. A private family memorial service and spreading of her ashes will take place in the summer of 2005. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society and Munson Hospice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. HOUGHTON - Eugene E. Kattelus, 83, of Houghton, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at the home of his son, Edward. He was born Nov. 7, 1921, in Ironwood, the son of the late John and Lydia (Justusson) Kattelus. He graduated from Ironwood High School with the class of 1941. Eugene later graduated from Highland Park Junior College in 1949, and attended Wayne State University. Eugene was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army from 1943 until 1952. He graduated from Officers Training as a 1st Lieutenant, AAA Weapons Unit, the 792nd AAA Battalion, the Anti-Aircraft Automatic Weapons Unit #1174. He served in Normandy, northern France, Ardennes, central Europe and Rhineland. He was discharged with the rank of Captain on Dec. 18, 1952. Eugene married the former Anelma Ranta on June 14, 1947, at the Salem National Lutheran Church in Detroit. She preceded him in death on May 31, 2003. Eugene was employed as an industrial furnace design engineer and was well-known in the field. He retired from the Dow Furnace Co. in Detroit after 23 years of service. He was a longtime active member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church of Redford Township; a life member of the Finnish Center Association of Farmington Hills; and was a current member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Traverse City. Eugene enjoyed camping, traveling, backyard picnics, entertaining and visiting with friends and relatives, and was always ready to lend a hand whenever anyone needed help. He was a handy-man, and even a barber. Eugene was an avid hockey fan and enjoyed watching his grandchildren play. He was "Gramps" to the local Midget AAA team, accompanying them on their bus trips to away games. He also enjoyed his last hunting season with two of his sons, Bob and Ed, and grandson, Cody, at their camp in Lake Gogebic. In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Ellen, and a brother, John. Surviving are three sons, James of Dallas, Texas, Robert (Jill) of Cedar and Edward of Houghton; seven grandchildren, Susan, Cory, Cary, Cody, Kati, Eric and Christopher Kattelus; two step-grandchildren, Melissa and Megan Glady; and one great-grandson, Jaia Kattelus. There will be no public viewing or services. A memorial service will be held later in the spring. The Plowe Funeral Home of Houghton is assisting the family with arrangements. HOLLAND - Arthur John "Jack" Love, 76, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004, at his home in Holland, Mich. He was born in Benzonia Aug. 26, 1928, the son of Ray and Lavon Love. Jack served in the U.S. Army from 1949-1952. He received his degree in tool and die making from Grand Rapids Junior College in 1969. He retired from Bohn Aluminum in Holland after 35 years as a tool maker. Jack was a member of Faith Christian Center in Holland. His family includes his wife of 51 ½ years, Betty Lou (Johnson) Love; children, Joyce and Dennis Bennedict of Holland, Barbara and John Ridlington of Holland, Diana Seeback of Holland, Anthony and Sharon Love of Florence, S.C., and Arthur and Julie Love of Holland; 13 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will take place this evening, Dec. 30, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Mulder Chapel Dykstra Life Story Funeral Home, 188 West 32nd St., in Holland. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 31, at The Faith Christian Center of Holland. Rev. Randy De Pree will be officiating. Burial will be in East Saugatuck Cemetery.
