Obituaries


      MARY E. BOYLE, 88, of Manistee, died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
      Visitation will take place at Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, 2005.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's of Mt. Carmel Shrine Church in Manistee. Burial will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery, Manistee.
      Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee is in charge of arrangements.
     
      DONALD K. GRAVELLE, 63, died at his home in Mancelona, Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2004.
      Visitation will take place Sunday, Jan. 2, from 4 to 9 p.m. at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home.
      Arrangements are being handled by Wolfe Funeral Home, Kalkaska.
     
      IRENE J. HERRMANN, 80, of Manistee, died Dec. 30, 2004, at her home.
      In accordance with Irene's wishes, graveside services and interment will be held at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 3, at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Manistee.
      A Memorial Mass to celebrate Irene's life will be held at a later date.
      The family is being served by the Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee.
     
      FRANK D. SEVAKIS died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004, at his home.
      Arrangements are with the Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Bessie R. Beach, 89, of Traverse City, died Dec. 28, 2004, at Bortz Health Care.
      Bessie was born in Hudsen, S. D., on Nov. 3, 1915, to Ben and Blanche (Olin) Baker. Bessie's early years were spent on the farm; then she struck out for California.
      As a waitress, Bessie met William John Beach Sr., a busboy, in Los Angeles. In California they raised their sons, John and Phillip.
      In 1987, with her husband William and mother-in-law Carmen, Bessie moved to Traverse City. William passed away in 1993. She enjoyed life in Traverse City. Besides crocheting many afghans, she loved working with crafts, especially decorating hats.
      Bessie always supported her husband Bill and son John in many Traverse City Track Club events.
      Bessie is survived by one son, W. John (Luan) Beach of Traverse City; seven grandchildren, Kathy, Jeffrey, Sandra, Erik, Glenn, Renee and Jodi. She also leaves several great- and great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mary Ann Stoltzfoos.
      Bessie was preceded in death by her parents; husband, William; and son, Phillip L. Juvé.
      A memorial gathering will take place Sunday, Jan. 2, from 3 until 5 p.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. Burial will take place in Eternal Valley Memorial Park and Mortuary in Newhall, Calif., at a later date.
      Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association.
     
      FAIRFIELD, Iowa - Henry Ogden Clark, 59, of Fairfield, Iowa, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004, in Mercy Medical Center in Iowa City, Iowa.
      Mr. Clark was born Dec. 29, 1944, in Berwyn, Ill., the son of Charles and Agnes Ogden Clark. He married Fran Louise Hodges on Aug. 15, 1991, in Fairfield, Iowa.
      He was reared in Traverse City, where he attended St. Francis grade and high schools and graduated in 1962 from Traverse City Senior High School. He was an active member of the St. Francis marching band and varsity ski team. He studied mathematics and visual arts at Reed College in Oregon and the University of Indiana.
      After advanced study in analysis of structures, he graduated from University of Michigan at Ann Arbor with a bachelor of architecture degree in 1969. He was a licensed architect in Georgia and Iowa and a certified Class A energy auditor in Iowa. He was a pioneer in the field of energy self-sufficiency, and co-authored the book "Energy Conservation for Buildings."
      Mr. Clark dedicated much of his adult life to practice and advocacy of Transcendental Meditation. He became a teacher of TM in 1972 at Fiuggi, Spain. He also served as a candidate for the Natural Law Party in two elections.
      Survivors include his wife and one daughter, Colette, of Fairfield.
      He was preceded in death by his identical twin, Lyman Clark.

      CADILLAC - Elissa N. Paulson of Mesick died Monday, Dec. 13, 2004, at her home.
      She was born April 20, 1918, in Jefferson Township, Hillsdale County, to Minard and Ruby Marion (Adams) Lewis. She married Rev. Vernon Paulson on Aug. 30, 1937, in Freeport. He preceded her in death on Aug. 21, 1979.
      Elissa Paulson enjoyed her family. She also loved music, playing and teaching the piano and organ, gardening, word games, bird watching, baking, reading late at night and writing letters. She had learned to play piano by age 11, starting out on the old pump organ at her home. As a pastor's wife, she had been the organist and pianist at various churches.
      Survivors include her children, Rachel (Donald) Reed of Tracy, Calif., Naomi (Paul) VanLiew of Phoenix, Ariz., Paul (Mary) Paulson of Corvallis, Ore., Faith (Nariman) Sodeifi of Newcastle, Wash., Sharon (James) Ream of Mesick, Daniel (Susan) Paulson of Cedar, Timothy (Nichy) Paulson of Rockford, Thom (Donna) Paulson of Traverse City, Karen (Michael) Grogan of Cadillac, Hope (Jerry) Hunter of Belen, N.M.; 28 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Dr. P. Helen Lewis of Shanghai, China.
      She was also preceded in death by her brother, Meredith Lewis; son, Philip Paulson; granddaughter, Dana Ream; and great-granddaughter, Brittany.
      Services will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 2, at Temple Hill Baptist Church with her son-in-law, Don Reed officiating. Burial will be in Cleon Township Cemetery. Cremation has taken place. A luncheon will be held at the church following the service.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Amicare Hospice.
     
      HONOR - F. Keith Phillippi of Honor, 86, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at the Homesteader.
      Keith was born in Marquette to Frederick and Beulah (Post) Phillippi on March 22, 1918. He attended Honor Congregational Church and was a member of the Michigan Milk Producers Association for many years; American Legion in Frankfort; VFW Post in Beulah; and was a life member of Crystal Lodge #270 F.& A.M.
      Keith's traveling adventures led him to visit all 50 states. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines. He was a dairy farmer for many years in Pleasanton Twp., in Manistee County, as a fruit and vegetable inspector for the Michigan Department of Agriculture. There was also a time when Keith, worked on the Ann Arbor Car Ferries.
      He married Beatrice (Green) Lysdal in 1950, who preceded him in death 1987.
      Keith is survived by a daughter, Karen (Carl) Canupp of Charlotte, N.C.; two step-children, Shirley (Earl) Soderquist of Frankfort, and Martin J. (Yvonne) Lysdal of Thousands Oaks, Calif.
      Keith and his wife, Beatrice, raised his niece, Sandra K. Phillippi (Cal) Guin of Sparta as one of their own. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
      He was also preceded in death by his father, Frederick; mother, Beulah; step-father, Nels Holden; and brother, Harold.
      A graveside service will be held in the spring.
      Memorials may be directed to the Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V), P.O. Box 14301 Cincinnati, OH 45250-0301, in memory of Frederick K. Phillippi; or to a charity of one's choice.
      The Benzonia Chapel of McElduff Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
