SUTTONS BAY - James Alden DeNoyer, 73, died suddenly on Saturday, Jan. 24, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. He was born in Lake Leelanau on March 28, 1930, to Ruben J. and Martha (Kirt) DeNoyer.
Jim lived for a short time in Ypsilanti while growing up. He attended Lake Leelanau St. Mary's High School. He married Lucy Knight; they made their first home in Traverse City, then moved to Suttons Bay in 1968. They also lived intermittently in Lansing and Mt. Pleasant, from 1984 until 1996.
Jim was a retired builder, and he will be remembered for his gifted cabinet making. He and Lucy built several homes, and they enjoyed buying and remodeling houses together. He was very patient with children, and he loved building toys for them.
He was a captain for the Elmwood Volunteer Fire Department for many years, and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus. He also patrolled Leelanau County as a deputy in the late 1960s.
Lucy was a musician who played in several area bands; Jim loved to listen when she played honky-tonk, Glenn Miller, and polkas. He loved to hunt and fish with his father and his brothers.
His favorite place in Traverse City was the J&S, where he swapped stories with all his buddies while he drank coffee. He had a great sense of humor, and he delighted in playing practical jokes. The world will be a duller, drabber place without him.
He is survived by his three children, Laurel A. (Michael) Marotta of Traverse City; Sgt. Andrew M. DeNoyer, serving with the U.S. Army; and Joseph A. (Susan) DeNoyer of Derbyshire, England; two granddaughters, Selene (Sebastian) Marotta-Oviedo of Miami, Fla., and Olivia Flescher of Kalkaska, whom he loved very much; his brother, Ruben (Mary) DeNoyer of Traverse City; sisters, Margaret (William) Hahnenberg of Midland, and Alice (Henry) Potter of New Smyrna Beach, Fla.; several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lucy, whom he missed very much; his brother, Don DeNoyer; his parents, Ruben and Martha DeNoyer; and brothers-in-law, Herb Loerke and John Knight.
There will be a memorial coffee at the J&S Hamburg on Front Street, on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2004, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Friends may also call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Thursday, Feb. 5, 2004, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., where a rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Francis Catholic Church, at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 6, 2004. The Rev. Patrick Maher will serve as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery in Suttons Bay.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice, Suttons Bay Fire and Rescue, or St. Francis Catholic Church.
