MAYER, 91, of Manistee, died on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Vistation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Edwards - Oak Grove Funeral Home in Bear Lake. A funeral service will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan.14, 2004, also at the funeral home. Burial will be in Onekama Village Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by Edwards - Oak Grove Funeral Home in Bear Lake. LAURA ELIZABETH PYKOSZ, 44, of Empire, formerly of Lapeer, died on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at home. A Memorial Mass will take place on Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at St. Daniel Catholic Church in Clarkston. Local arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. VIOLET L. RICHTER, of Suttons Bay, died on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Orchard Creek Care Center. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 14, 2004, at the Keswick United Methodist Church, with Rev. Wayne A. Price serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, in Keswick. WILLIAM R. WORTHINGTON, 83, of Traverse City, died on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at home. A celebration of Bill's life will be held on Saturday, Feb. 14, 2004, at the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City. A complete obituary will appear in a future edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. TRAVERSE CITY - Mildred L. Lindblad, 67, of Traverse City, died on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born on Feb. 16, 1936, in Battle Creek, she was the daughter of Lennart E. and Helena (Warner) Lindblad. Formerly of Battle Creek, she had been a resident of the Traverse City area since 1988. Mildred was a graduate of Battle Creek Central High School and attended Western Michigan University. In Traverse City, she owned and operated Lulu's Garden Art Work. Her artwork was not only her business, but one of her passions. She was an animal lover and was involved in the Basenji Rescue Organization. Over the years, she fostered and adopted many animals. Mildred is survived by her children, Stephen (Jennifer) Tooker of Scottsdale, Ariz., Eric (Lisa) Tooker of Phoenix, Ariz., Richard (Robin) Tooker of Madison, Wis., and Laura (Jonathan) Abuhl of Williston, N.D.; her mother, Helena Lindblad of Plainwell; her sister, Martha 'Marti' Lindblad of Plainwell; and 10 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 33 years, Richard Tooker, in 2002; and her father, Lennart Lindblad. Memorial services will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at 2 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, with Rev. James Helman serving as celebrant. Friends may call at the funeral home, one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in Riverside Cemetery, in Union City. Memorials may be directed to the Basenji Rescue Organization, or to the Multiple Myeloma Foundation. KINGSLEY - Thomas W. 'Tom' Elder, 66, of Kingsley, died on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2004, in Big Rapids. He was born in Elkhart, Ind., on Jan. 7, 1938, the son of Donald E. and Eldona E. (Fahl) Elder. He married Martha M. Heminger on June 26, 1960, in Montville. Tom retired from National Cash Register after 38 years of service. He was a devout born again Christian and attended Grace Bible Church in East Jordan. He was also a member of the NRA, and was on the zoning board in Paradise Township. Tom enjoyed hunting and fishing. He truly loved his family and grandchildren. Tom is survived by his wife of 43 years, Martha M. Elder of Kingsley; three sons, Thomas Elder Jr. of White Pigeon, Gary Elder of Kingsley, and Norman Elder of Cincinnati; three daughters, Jeanine (Greg) Crouse of Kingsley, Jane (Gert) Schlingensief of Virginia Beach, Va., and Janet (Brad) VanWingerden of Kingsley; six grandchildren, Matt, Hailey, Jacob, Saskia, Lily and Zane; his father, Donald Elder of Constantine; a sister, Nancy (Donald) Weiselberg of Traverse City; and two brothers, Edward (Donna) Elder and Richard (Kim) Elder, all of Constantine. He was preceded in death by his mother, Eldona Elder; two brothers, Royce Elder and Gary Elder; and his sister, Sally Elder. Visitation will be held at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home on Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. A funeral service will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at 11 a.m., from the funeral home, with Rev. TRAVERSE CITY - George H. Rohde, 75, of Traverse City, died on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at home. Born on Feb. 8, 1928, in Muskegon, he was the son of Herman L. and Anna (Enkleman) Rohde. On June 9, 1956, in Traverse City, he married the former Dorothy M. Smith, who survives. George was a member of the VFW Post #2780 of Traverse City, and the American Legion Post #436 of Kingsley. He served in the United States Army honorably during the Korean conflict, from 1950 to 1952. George was formerly employed by Ralston-Purina, M.J. Macintosh and Co., Builders Plumbing and Supply, and Stromberg-Carlson, from which he retired. George loved to work in the garden, ice fish, help anyone in need, and spend time with his extended family. He is survived by his special family, Dennis, Donald, Pete, Dewayne Morton and Dorothy Fifarek; his niece, Patti Ritsema; his special little friends, Tabitha, Amanda, David, Logan, Tyler, Hannah, Griffin and Dillon; and numerous other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Hilda. Memorial services will be held at St. Patrick Catholic Church on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004, at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Fr. Gerald Micketti as celebrant. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Hospice, St. Patrick Catholic Church, or to the charity of your choice. Arrangements are by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. RAPID CITY - Neil Maxwell Kimball, 96, of Rapid City, passed away on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, in Traverse City. He was born on March 16, 1907, in Muir, the son of Victor and Elizabeth (Shutt) Kimball. Neil married Margaret Stander on June 18, 1927, in Detroit. During WWII, Neil worked on battleship construction, as an electrician, in Detroit. From Detroit, Neil, Margaret and their son, John, moved to Rapid City in 1948. He retired from Super Tool of Elk Rapids in 1973; he was also self-employed as an electrician for many years. Surviving Neil is his beloved family; his daughter-in-law, Mary F. Kimball of Rapid City; his grandchildren, Yvonne K. (Phillip, Jr.) Nault of Traverse City, David J. Kimball of Traverse City, Daniel J. (Grace) Kimball of Rapid City, John Kimball, Bryan Kimball and William Kimball; and 10 great-grandchildren. Neil was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, on April 22, 1978; and his son, John David Kimball, on Jan. 15, 2002. A graveside service will be in the spring at Clearwater Township Cemetery. Service information will be announced at a later date. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. MAPLE CITY - Donald G. Stachnik, 71, a lifelong resident of Maple City, died Friday morning, Jan. 9, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Born on March 21, 1932, in Traverse City, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Margaret (Skellet) Stachnik. On Aug. 30, 1952, at Maple City Community Church, he married the former Opal VanHorn, who survives. Don had been employed by the Leelanau County Road Commission, retiring in 1991, after 36˝ years of dedicated service. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking and gardening. He will be fondly remembered for his quiet spirit and his loving devotion to his wife, children, and grandchildren. Don will be greatly missed. Along with his wife, Opal, Don is survived by his four children, Bob (Judy) Stachnik of Cedar, Ron (Catrina) Stachnik of Beulah, Donna Sadler of Maple City, and Renee (Gary) Childers of Lake Ann; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Robert (Violet) Stachnik and Darwin (Maxine) Stachnik, all of Maple City; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, in Traverse City, on Sunday evening, January 11, 2004, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Services will be held at the funeral home on Monday, Jan. 12, 2004, at 5 p.m. Pastor Carroll Sattler will officiate. KALKASKA - Ernie (Scott) Hicks, 40, of Kalkaska, died on Jan. 7, 2004, in Independence, Kansas. Born on March 28, 1963, in Napoleon, Ohio, he was the son of Billy and Dollie (Dalton) Hicks. He married Carrole A. Phelan on Oct. 24, 1981, in Kalkaska. Ernie graduated from Forest Area High School in 1981. He was employed by Team Downhole Service, in Kalkaska, for 14 years. He enjoyed all outdoor motor sports. Ernie is survived by his children, Heather Dawn Hicks and Billy Douglas Hicks of South Boardman, and Jordan Kristofer Smith of Kalkaska; his parents, Billy and Katie Hicks of South Carolina; his dear friend, Carrole Hicks of South Boardman; his siblings, Mike (Cathryn) Hicks of South Boardman, Billy Randall Hicks of White Falls, Kan., Terry (Linda) Dodge of South Boardman, David (Melody) Dodge of Kalkaska, Debi (Roger) Barber of Whitmore Lake, Sandy Barber of Fife Lake, Barb (Brian) Barber of Conway, S.C., Doug (Raina) Hicks of Kalkaska, Gerald Dodge of Conway, S.C., and Tom Dodge of Kalkaska; his special friends, Steve Joslin and Donnie Tinker; and a very large extended family. Ernie was preceded in death by his mother, Dollie, on May 21, 2001. In accordance with Ernie's wishes, cremation has taken place. Box 370, Kalkaska, MI 49646. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. TRAVERSE CITY - Beverly J. Boyer, 70, of Traverse City, died on Friday, Jan. 9, 2004, at home. Born Nov. 29, 1933, in Ferndale, she was the daughter of Paul and Henrietta (Bruinenberg) Kroesing. On March 14, 1953, in Fife Lake, she married Elmer L. Boyer Sr., who survives. Beverly worked at Tempo/ Fisher Big Wheel for 19 years. She then partnered with her husband as a truck driver for 15 years. She enjoyed quilting, crafts, ceramics, and being with her family. Along with her husband, Elmer, Beverly is survived by her son, Elmer L. Boyer III of Grawn; daughter, Jean D. Sisco of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Stacey, Joshua, and Jared; one brother, Larry (Judy) Kroesing of Traverse City; seven sisters, Margaret (Albert) Peters of Arkansas, Edna (John) Freeman of Kalkaska, Patricia (Don) Thomas of Traverse City, Pauline (Murray) Garner of Kalkaska, Betty Lou Findley of Traverse City, Alice Rice of Troy, Ill., and Mickey (Michael) Ubl of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Jack, James, and Paul Kroesing. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, in Traverse City, on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at 11 a.m., where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Marc Hoard will be officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family. TRAVERSE CITY - Edward B. 'Doby' Doberstyn, 91, of Traverse City, died on Dec. 10, 2004, following an accident in Washington, D.C., where he was visiting his children. He was born on May 13, 1912, in Cleveland, the son of Walter and Martha Doberstyn. He attended South High School, in Cleveland, and Ohio State University. His career was with the B.K. Elliott Company; he was a major producer and purveyor of engineering, optical, artists’ and drafting equipment in Detroit, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Atlanta and Orlando, Fla. He retired as Executive Vice President of the company, which dealt extensively with the Detroit automobile industry, in 1970. Doby married Delphine Gay in 1938, and was the father of Marianne Doberstyn, of Washington, D.C., who became the owner and director of the Montessori School of Washington, and Dr. Edward Brian Doberstyn, who became a specialist in tropical diseases, recently retired as Director, Communicable Diseases, World Health Organization Regional Office for the Western Pacific, in Manila, Philippines. In this capacity, Brian was deeply involved in the control of the Asian SARS epidemics last year. Following the death of Delphine in 1968, Doby and Dorothy Heideman were married in 1971, and the couple moved to Traverse City in 1974, living first on the Old Mission Peninsula, and then, for the last 10 years, in Holiday Hills. Dorothy died in Traverse City, in January of 1997. Doby spent the last five winters at the home of his son, Brian, in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand, where he was a parishioner at the Seven Fountains Jesuit Center. In Traverse City, Doby was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church. He was a keen landscape gardener and took great pleasure in being surrounded by flowers and greenery. All of his gardens were the envy of friends and neighbors. He is survived by his children, Brian and Marianne; his stepdaughters, Jan Gwinnell of Traverse City, and Kay Wright of northern Virginia; and his sisters, Clara Zaring of Indianapolis, and Ann Chester of Cleveland. Seven other brothers and sisters have preceded him in death. The Mass of the Resurrection was celebrated in Washington, D.C., on Saturday, Dec. 13, 2003, and burial took place in Cleveland, on Monday, Dec. 15, 2003. Memorial contributions may be made to Scholarships for Poor Children, c/o Father Miguel Garaizabal, S.J.,The Seven Fountains Center, 97 Huay Kaew Road, Chiang Mai 50300, Thailand, a foundation that provides basic support for the education of poor hill-tribe children in northern Thailand, a cause that Doby has supported for the past several years.
