TRAVERSE CITY - Frank Gordon Simmons (Gordie to all) died at home on Thursday, Jan. 15, 2004. Gordie was born on Dec. 7, 1914, in Rochester, N.Y., the only child of the late Genevieve (Burke) and Frank Griffith Simmons. At 6 months of age, Gordie and his parents returned to the home community of Nutley, N.J. Schooled in the Nutley systems, he was a student at the top of his class. In sports, he excelled in football. He was a Class of '37 Lehigh University student majoring in Mechanical Engineering , and later received two lesser degrees from NYU and Columbia. At Lehigh, he was invited to join ATO Fraternity, where there were many learned and fun lessons! A few 'later years' Class Reunions brought back the camaraderie enjoyed by these gentlemen over those college years. Gordie's most favored spectator sport was high school and college wrestling. What fun at NCAA Easterns and Nationals Nationwide! As an ROTC graduate, Gordie was claimed for Active Duty shortly after joining Westinghouse (Pittsburgh) and commandeered the first cross-country Army Truck Convoy. This was comprised of 80 trucks, tanks, jeeps and his Company personnel. The convoy originated at Aberdeen Proving Grounds in Maryland, and ended at Benetia Arsenal, Calif. From there, he was ordered to old Fort Richardson, Alaska, as Post Ordnance Officer. Shortly after Pearl Harbor, Gordie was ordered to the Aleutian Islands (Unimak/Unalaska Islands), again as Post Ordnance Officer. He spent more than a year there, then returned to Anchorage, and then to Ft. Myer, Va. Again, his duty was Post Ord. Officer. Having met Peg (Campbell), from Bay City, at Ft. Richardson, he FINALLY decided to pop the question, and they were married in the Arlington Chapel on July 29, 1944, resulting in a great almost 60 years together! Medically retired from Pentagon duty, he joined International/General Electric, and his territory was Europe, Mexico and South America (this included a few stealthy trips into then Cold War Countries). Those 25 years with IGE proved productive, challenging and interesting. Gordie was an unassuming, interesting, loving and happy gentleman - a listener with a booming laugh and infectious smile. He loved golf, swimming, and his once-upon-a-time pontoon boat. This gentle father and friend will be so missed by family; close 'proxies'; associates; his loving wife, Peg; his two children, Frank Griffith Simmons II of San Diego, Calif., Elizabethanne Simmons (Ron) Johnson and their two sons, Todd (Margaret) Johnson, who have three beautiful children and Gordie's great-grandchildren, and second son, Matthew Johnson, all of Charlotte, N.C.; and two cousins, Jane Ericsen of Mickleton, N.J., and Florence Vidair of Whiting, N.J. Never to be omitted would be a nationwide host of 'proxy kids' and their young people. The Simmons have a BIG family of proxies, loved and loving, too numerous to mention, but so enjoyed. This kind gentleman will be missed by many, but mainly and especially by his wife and best friend, Peg. Memorial services will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in mid-May. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Kiwanis Club of Traverse City, of which Gordie was a member, the Lehigh University Wrestling Program, or the excellent wrestling programs offered at Traverse City Central or West High Schools. < TRAVERSE CITY - Geraldine M.
