CARNES, 87, of Bellaire, died Friday evening, Jan. 23, 2004, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at the Central Lake Bible Baptist Church. Arrangements are being handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. EVERETT L. SIEFFERT, 68, of Grawn, died on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Visitation will be held on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Grawn United Methodist Church, where additional visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. A full obituary will appear in Monday's edition of the Record-Eagle. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. ESTHER N. TERWILLIGER, 101, of Traverse City, died on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Arrangements are pending and will be announced by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. FRANKFORT - Harlow Mills Ehman, son of Herman A. and Vesta E. (Pettitt) Ehman, was born on July 3, 1909, in Benzonia, and died on Jan. 23, 2004, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, at age 94. He graduated from Benzonia High School in 1927. After working in Detroit for a short time, he began his long career working in, and later owning and operating, several Standard Oil service stations in Benzonia, Traverse City, and Beulah. During the 1950s, he served as president of the Northwest Michigan Retail Gasoline Dealers Association. Harlow was active in public service. He was heavily involved in Boy Scouts with his three sons. From the 1930s through 1972, he served many terms as trustee, and one term as president, of Benzonia Village. He was trustee, vice-president, and president of the Benzonia Consolidated School and Benzie County School Boards. During the 1960s, the Benzie Central School System was established, partly through his devoted work. He was Benzonia Township Zoning Administrator for seven years. He also served on the Beulah/Benzonia Chamber of Commerce. Perhaps his most visible community role was as a member of the Benzonia Township Volunteer Fire Department for 14 years, during which he was Chief or Assistant Chief for eight years. His family fondly remembers many evening meals interrupted by the fire siren, calls from "Central," and his hasty departures from the dinner table, sometimes accompanied by eager youngsters. Harlow was a long-time member of the First Congregational Church in Benzonia, and was Deacon and Trustee for a number of years. One of his earliest memories, in 1913, at four years old, was going with his father to help dig a foundation for the West Wing of the old church. He enjoyed fixing things, playing golf, reading, and card games. He spent the last few years of his life at Michigan Shores in Frankfort, surrounded by loving friends. He will be remembered fondly by his family and many friends for his love of life, optimism, humor, honesty, and refusal to complain in the worst of circumstances. He is survived by his wife, Charlotte L. (Filter) Nametz of Frankfort; sons, Donald A. (Elsie L.) of Tucson, Ariz., and Lee H. (Barbara L. Wilcox) of Bloomington, Ind.; daughter, Jeannette M. Ehman of Holt; brother, John T. 'Ted' (Elizabeth P.) Ehman of Benzonia; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marguerite J. (Rankin); his second wife, Addie Jane Larson; son, Kenneth H.; sisters, Lowella E. and Winifred M; and brother, Philip P. Memorial services will be conducted at the First Congregational Church in Benzonia, at 2 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, with Rev. Stephen Davidson officiating. A graveside service is planned for the summer of 2004. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Benzie Historical Museum, where Harlow was an active member and volunteer. The Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, is handling arrangements. TRAVERSE CITY - Lawrence 'Larry' Moore, 67, passed away at his home, on Jan. 22, 2004, after a short, courageous battle with cancer. Larry was born on Oct. 6, 1936, in Hillsdale County. He married Norma (Tanner) Moore on Sept. 8, 1956. Larry was employed by Village Press in Traverse City. He was an avid reader, enjoyed many sports, loved his animals and enjoyed taking long walks with his dogs. Larry had a very special place in his heart for his grandchildren. He is survived by his wife, Norma; his daughters Jeanne (David) Holliday of Hillsdale, and Amy (Philip) Poholski of Middleville; his son, David (Michele) Moore of Traverse City; and seven grandchildren, Sarah and Jordan Holliday, John and Luke Poholski, and Carly, Justin and Rachel Moore. A memorial service will be held at Feast of Victory Lutheran Church in Acme, on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2004, at 2 p.m. The family requests any memorial contributions be made to Hospice, Trinity Lutheran Church in Hillsdale, or Feast of Victory Lutheran Church in Traverse City. The family wants to thank all their family and friends, and hospice care providers, for their love and support. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. ONEKAMA - Marva Lucille McCarthy, 74, of Onekama, died on Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at the Manistee County Medical Care Facility. She was born on March 11, 1929, in Lake Leelanau, the daughter of Rueben and Josephine (Chaurd) Popp. On April 30, 1955, Marva married Ward S. McCarthy, who preceded her in death in 1989. Marva had worked as registered nurse at West Shore Hospital until her retirement. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Onekama, and the Spirit of the Woods Garden Club. Marva is survived by five brothers and sisters, Harold (Yvonne) Popp of Wyandotte, Donna (Rich) Mansfield of Germfast, Marion (Stanley) Sanford, Doris (Leo) Kriger of Houghton, and Warren (Betty) Popp of Kalamazoo; and numerous nieces and nephews, including her special nephew, James (Sharon) McDermott of Interlochen. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, Bernie; and her stepbrother, Jim. Visitation will be held on Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva, with a Rosary service at 7:30 p.m. A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Onekama, with Father Michael Conner serving as celebrant. Interment will be in the St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, in the spring. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Diabetes Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Arrangements are being handled by Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. ELK RAPIDS - Betty L. (Strouse) LaPointe, 73, of Elk Rapids, died on Friday Jan. 23, 2004, with her family at her side. Born on Nov. 26, 1930, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Margaret (Martz) and Wayne McQueary. She had lived in Temperance prior to moving to Elk Rapids. Betty spent many hours of her life volunteering her time, including working with the Lewis Avenue Baptist Church Day Care in Temperance, the Elk Rapids Headstart and the Elk Rapids foster grandparents program. She enjoyed music and dance, and was known affectionately to many of her friends as 'Bubbling Betty.' At her housing complex, she drove residents to various appointments and functions. She loved her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and passing on her great sense of humor to them. Surviving Betty are her four children, Debra (Mark) Ramsey of Fayetteville, Ga., Roger Strouse of Chicago, Ill., Thomas (Darlene) Strouse of Sylvania, Ohio, and Bradley (Linda) Strouse of Temperance; 12 grandchildren, Nathan, Andrea, Alyson, Raymond, Brian, Sarah, Russell, Kelly, Jennifer, Amanda, Jeanette, and Jessica; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Wayne (Marianne) McQueary of Westphalia; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Mary and Margaret; and one brother, James. A memorial service will be held on Saturday Jan. 31, 2004, at 11:30 a.m., from the Elk Rapids Baptist Church, 400 E. Third St., Elk Rapids, MI 49629, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Rev. Gary Gladfelter will officiate. Inurnment will be in Acacia Park Cemetery in Beverly Hills, Mich. Memorial Contributions may be made, in honor of Betty, to the Elk Rapids Baptist Church. Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. HAYWARD, Calif. - Timothy C. Tuller, 93, of Hayward, Calif., formerly of Kalkaska, passed away on Jan. 11, 2004. Born on May 22, 1910, in Grand Traverse County, he was the son of Wilbur and Anna (VanderHoff) Tuller. Timothy was a teacher and principal at Kalkaska High School, and past superintendent of Rapid City Schools. He also worked as a land surveyor for 30 years in the Kalkaska, Elk Rapids and Rapid City areas. Timothy was active in Kalkaska Community Choirs and studied at Interlochen Arts Academy. He loved to attend concerts at Interlochen. Timothy was a past Clerk of Clearwater Township. He was a member of Kalkaska Church of God. Timothy is survived by his children, Jack Tuller of Santa Monica, Calif., Rose Mary (John) DuFermont of Rapid City, and Carol (Thomas) Smith of Alameda, Calif.; 13 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren. Timothy was preceded in death by his daughter, Anna Mae Howard; his grandson, John McCann; his granddaughters, Deborah Howard and Shelly Tuller; and his brothers, Jesse, Daniel, Cecil, Cephus and Samuel. Visitation will be held on Sunday, Jan. 25, 2004, from noon until 3 p.m., at Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Interment will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens, where a memorial service will be scheduled in the spring. Memorials may be made, in memory of Timothy Tuller, to Kalkaska Commission on Aging, 303 S. Coral, Kalkaska, MI 49646. Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Edith Mildred Markley, 91, of Chattanooga, Tenn., died on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004, at her residence. She was a native of New York, and a long-time resident of Rapid City. She was Past Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star in Bayshore, N.Y. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Bert Rees of Chattanooga; grandson and wife, Albert and Kristyn Rees of Georgia; granddaughter, Tammy Rees of Virginia; and great-grandsons, Logan and Tyler Rees of Georgia. Her first husband, Lewis Renhall, and second husband, John Markley, preceded her in death.
