Obituaries

GLADYS MARIE KIMBALL, 87, of Wellston, died on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in Wellston.
      Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Herbert Funeral Home, P.C., in Manistee, where visitation will be held from 1 p.m. until the time of the service. Burial will take place in the spring.
      The Herbert Funeral Home, P.C., in Manistee, is in charge of arrangements.
     
      EVA E. MAY, 102, of Traverse City, died on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
      A memorial service is being planned for the spring of this year.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      H. DALE MURDEN, 81, of Bellaire, died on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at his home.
      A memorial service will be held at a later date.
      Arrangements were made by Hastings Funeral Home in Ellsworth.
     
      PAUL H. WINDISH, 90, of Bellaire, died on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility.
      Visitation will be held today, Jan. 29, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at 2 p.m., also at the funeral home. Interment will take place in Chapman Cemetery, in Custer Township, in the spring.
     
      ALDEN - Velva E. Rolfe, 78, of Alden, died on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at her home. She was born on Feb. 15, 1925, in Flint, the daughter of Cleason and Elizabeth (Fuller) Wilhelm. She had resided in Alden since 1973. Prior to that, she spent many years in Pontiac.
      She was employed by United Technology in Traverse City for many years.
      She enjoyed crocheting and Bingo, and she had a special love for her little dog, Angel.
      She is survived by four children, JoAnn Washburn of Mancelona, Leone (Bobby) Freeman of Otisville, Charles (Nancy) Drinkwine of Kewadin, and Leo (Jill) Drinkwine of Alden; many grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Drinkwine, in 1968; two sons, Joseph Drinkwine Jr., and Ronald Drinkwine; two sisters; one brother; a grandson, Wade Joseph Bargy; a great-grandson, Jordan Sizemore; her parents; and a son-in-law, Dennis Washburn.
      Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will take place on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at 2 p.m., also at the funeral home, with additional visitation from noon until the time of services. Interment will take place in Oak Hill Cemetery, in Pontiac.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the family.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Mancelona Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Henry Heller Jr., 89, of Traverse City, died on Tuesday, Jan. 26, 2004, at Birchwood Nursing Center of Traverse City. Henry was born on Jan. 31, 1914, the son of Laura B. (Sheff) and Henry Heller Sr.
      Henry served his country honorably, with the United States Navy, during World War II. Until his retirement, he worked for many years for General Motors.
      Henry attended The Presbyterian Church in Traverse City and could always be found spending time in his yard, garden, or greenhouse.
      He is survived by his two sons, Ron Heller and Darrell Heller, both of Traverse City; three grandchildren, Meredith (Scott) VanBrocklin, David (Diana) Heller, and Scott (Michel) Heller; and six great-grandchildren.
      Henry was preceded in death by his beloved wife, the former Lillian V. Bell, on Sept. 18, 2000; his parents; and two brothers, Francis and Samuel Heller.
      Funeral services for Henry will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, with visitation one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Dr. Homer Nye will be serving as celebrant.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to The Presbyterian Church in Traverse City.
     
      PESHAWBESTOWN - Ashley Rose Powers, 18, of Peshawbestown, died on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, in Peshawbestown. She was born on March 31, 1985, in Grand Rapids, to Bret Charles Dempsey and Anita Marie Hall.
      Ashley was a member of The Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
      She was an excellent cook, and enjoyed sharing her talent. Ashley had a big heart and was always good to everyone. She truly loved her family and all her nieces and nephews.
      Ashley is survived by her mother; two brothers, Ronald J. Powers Jr. and Samual Powers; grandparents, Delores Hill, Al and Joan Heslinga, and Henry and Brenda Sluis; four aunts, Seguita Hall, Nicko Hall, Jamie Heslinga, and Melanie Heslinga; two uncles, Shocko Hall and Wally (Toni) Hall; and many cousins.
      She was preceded in death by her father; and her aunt, Shenna Mae.
      A funeral service will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at Northport Indian Mission Church, with Rev. Thomas Johns as celebrant. Visitation will be held at the church, from 4 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 29, 2004, until the time of the service on Saturday. The sacred fire will be at 2913 W. Bayshore Dr., in Peshawbestown. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, in Omena.
      Arrangements are being handled by Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay.
     
      MESICK - Henry Louis Chandler, 81, of Mesick, died on Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City. He was born on Nov. 21, 1922, in Harrietta, the son of Louis and Violet (Handy) Chandler. On Jan. 24, 1943, in Onekama, Henry married Edna F. Egan, who survives him.
      Henry was a Veteran of World War II, serving in the US Army, where he earned the Bronze Star Valor Award for his efforts. He worked for 33 years at Cook Contracting Company in Detroit; and later for Peninsula Asphalt in Traverse, from 1979 until his retirement in 1985.
      In his spare time, Henry enjoyed being outdoors, working in his garden, and spending time with his sons and grandsons while fishing, hunting and cutting wood. He also enjoyed working around the house, tinkering in his garage and fixing things.
      He was a member of the American Legion Read-Osborne Post #531 in Copemish. He was also a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church in Copemish, where he had been the custodian for many years.
      In addition to his wife, Henry is survived by 11 children, Ruth (John) Schaub of Buckley, Donald (Dorothy) Chandler of Hamilton, Irene (Jim) Oliver of Davenport, Fla., Richard (Sherri) Chandler of Roseland, Fla., Philip Chandler of Roseland, Fla., Elaine Metro of Grand Rapids, Regina (Kim) Couls of Macomb, David Chandler of Colorado Springs, Colo., Michael Chandler of Manton, John (Beth) Chandler of Dansville, and Kathleen Chandler of Ypsilanti; 34 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one brother, Lloyd (Iovia) Chandler of Harrietta; two sisters, Charlene Lindale of Grand Rapids, and Vivian (Henry) Mazade of Baldwin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Henry was preceded in death by: his son-in-law, Denny Nolf; his grandson, Ronald Nolf; his great-grandson, Kevin Nolf; two brothers, Bertrum Chandler and Dale Chandler; and two sisters, Doris Mongar and Mildred Short.
      Visitation will be held on Friday, Jan. 30, 2004, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva, with a reciting of the rosary at 4 p.m. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 31, 2004, at St. Raphael Catholic Church in Copemish, with Father Richard Kosterman as celebrant. Additional visitation will be held at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of services. Interment will take place in the spring, in the Cleon Township Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted under the auspices of the American Legion Read-Osborne Post #531.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Munson Hospice or to the American Legion Read-Osborne Post #531 Scholarship Fund. Envelopes are available at the Terwilliger Funeral Home.
