KEWADIN - A former Kewadin resident who attended Elk Rapids schools, Eugene Ruggles died June 3, 2004, in Petaluma, Calif.
Betty Beebe of Eastport borrowed her book title, "Breathes Escaping Envelopes," from a poem he authored. A Pulitzer Prize nominee, Ruggles wrote "Lifeguard in The Snow" in 1977. His poetry won wide acclaim. He was published in the New Yorker, Atlantic Monthly and Poetry Magazine, among others. He won the highly respected Great Lakes Colleges Award in Poetry.
Ruggles was known in the San Francisco area for organizing large-venue poetry benefits for Amnesty International, political causes and other charities. He was a passionate voice for human rights and social justice. In one poem, "Masses," Ruggles asked: "Who will speak for the simple and the dumb?"
In "A Woman Inside El Salvador," Ruggles commemorated Archbishop Romero's murder. In one stanza he wrote:
"There is only one country on earth, all wars are civil wars - Light falls down the dark well of her long hair and remembers. She listens to the Archbishop kneeling, the fourteen bullets of the fourteen families, the fountains rising from them. She moves her finger along the scar that is in every ear of corn to be eaten… Monsignor, Monsignor, Monsignor."
Lawrence Ferlinghetti, former poet laureate of San Francisco, said, "His most astounding characteristic is his heart."
Ruggles attended the University of Detroit and Lake Superior College, and served in the U.S. Marines.
Ruggles is survived by his three children, Adam and Benjamen Ruggles, and Sara Tompson; grandchildren, Jenny, Tyler and Braydon; his brother, Glenn Ruggles; and his sisters, Mary Ruggles and Margaret (Meg) Walton.
Another brother, Charles, died four years ago.
