Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 12, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Pleasant Valley Free Methodist Church. IDA MAE (LAKE) UMLOR, 98, of Traverse City, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at Tendercare of Traverse City. Arrangements are pending at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A full obituary will appear in Monday's edition of the Record-Eagle. FRANKFORT - Prudence M. Gaines, 83, of Frankfort, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at The Maples in Frankfort. She was born on Sept. 5, 1920, in Hadley. Prudence is survived by a son, Mike (Gerry) Rokos; two daughters, Janet (Gaylord) McCaffrey and Rose (Tex) Leatherman; daughter-in-law, Barb Rokos; 16 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Gaines; son, Ed Rokos; one grandson; a great-granddaughter; sister, Jeanette Chilson; and her parents, Frank and Rose Howe. Cremation has taken place and there are no services planned. The family is being served by the Frankfort Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes. Memorials, in Prudence's memory, may be directed to The Maples. NORTHPORT - Adelbert Morse Spitler, 72 of Northport, formerly of Ithaca, died Friday, July 9, 2004, at the Leelanau Memorial Health Center. Born Jan. 15, 1932, in Lansing, he was the son of John M. and Adelaide C. (Morse) Spitler. On July 19, 1952, in East Lansing, he married the former Joann Marie Rennels. Adelbert was a Boy Scout leader and enjoyed studying genealogy. He was a lover of music and life. Mr. Spitler served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Masons, the Lions Club and Bethany Lutheran Church. Adelbert is survived by his wife, Joann; his children, Bradley Morse Spitler, Lori Marie (Patrick O.) Wilson and Brenda Joann ( Kelly Brien) McWaters; and daughter-in-law, Dawn Marie Marcy. He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Abbott Spitler; brothers, John Spitler Jr., James Spitler and twin brother, William B. Spitler; sister, Margaret Rhoades; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at 2 p.m., at the Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport, with visitation two hours prior to the service. The Rev. Ruth Overdier will officiate the service. Burial, with a Masonic service, will be in the Leelanau Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Bethany Lutheran Church in Northport. Arrangements were made by the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. TRAVERSE CITY - Lula J. Plamondon, 66, of Traverse City, passed away on Friday, July 9, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. Born on March 30, 1938, in Kalkaska, she was the daughter of Laurie and Bernice (Blanchard) Forbes. Lula married Ronald W. Plamondon in 1957. Lula had a great love for children and devoted her life to them. She was known as "Grandma Lou" to many generations of children that she cared for. Lula is survived by her children, Rick (Ida) Plamondon of Kingsley, Randy (Lisa) Plamondon, Doug (Kathy) Plamondon and Bonnie Mack, all of Traverse City; sister, Nancy (Lyle) Ingersoll of Kingsley; brother, Donald (Helen) Forbes; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Lula was preceded in death by her parents, Laurie and Bernice; husband, Ronald; son, Ronnie; and siblings, Harold Forbes, Larry Forbes and Val Gene Forbes. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 525 W 14th St., Ste. 5, Traverse City, 49684. A memorial service, in her honor, will be held on Thursday, July 15, 2004, at 1 p.m., with a visitation one hour prior to the service, at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Arrangements were made by the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. SARASOTA Fla. - Barbara J. Fields, 71, a retired TV Guide editor in New York and homemaker, died June 10, 2004, in Sarsota, Fla., while staying with her daughter, Monica Ann Fields. Barbara was one of four children born, in Dearborn, to Thomas Edwards, a former U of M football All American player, and Monica Marie ( McGoveren) Edwards. She later moved to New York, N.Y. Barbara studied psychology while attending college. She then moved and became a homemaker, caring for her four children in New York. She is survived by two sons, Paul and Michael Fields, both of Traverse City; a daughter, Monica Fields of Sarasota, Fla.; three brothers, Dr. David Edwards of Boulder, Colo., Dr. John Edwards of Madison, Wis. and Thomas Edwards of Peoria, Ill.; grandchildren, Lauren Smith, Steven Fields, Justin Misoleck, Cassandra, Alexis, Cameron, and Kathaleen, all of Traverse City. Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, former FBI agent Paul Charles Fields; her father, Thomas Edwards; her mother, Monica Edwards, teacher; a sister, Susan Edwards, teacher; and her beloved son, John Steven Fields. A Mass will be held in her honor on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at the centennial home farm of her parents, with her great-nephew the Rev. Fr. Thomas Johnson officiating. Ferguson, 81, of Traverse City, died Monday, June 28, 2004, at Munson Medical Center. Born Feb. 13, 1923, in Corunna, he was the son of Alfred E. and Ruth (Davis) Ferguson. On Jan. 8, 1945, at Garfield Methodist Church in Chicago, he married the former, Rosalia Blacken. Mr. Ferguson had been a resident of the Traverse City area since he was 10 years old, where he attended classes at the Perry Hannah house. He later served his country honorably with the United States Navy as Corpsman 1st Class Petty Officer in the Pacific during World War II. Mr. Ferguson was the former proprietor of Brownie's Grill from 1954 to 1966. He then worked as a chef for the Elk's Lodge in Traverse City and continued his career at the Park Place Hotel until 1983. Mr. Ferguson was a member of Cherryland VFW Post 2780. He was well known as the greatest joke teller of Traverse City and will be fondly remembered by his family and many friends. Survivors include his three children, Carl, Robert and Patricia Ferguson, all of Traverse City; one grandson, Neil Ferguson of Traverse City; one great-grandson, Nathan Underwood of Traverse City; one sister, Dorothy Stejskal of Bloomington, Ind.; one brother, David Ferguson of Chicago; and many nieces and nephews. Along with his beloved wife, Rosalia, of 56 years, Mr. Ferguson was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Lois Purvis; and four brothers, Gail Norton, Earl Norton, Al McConnel and Richard Ferguson. A memorial service will be held at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City on Saturday, July 17, 2004, at 11 a.m., where friends may call one hour prior to the services.
