Obituaries

      WILLIAM "BILL" GARLAND, 62, of Manistee, died Friday, July 16, 2004, at his home.
      According to his wishes there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 25, 2004, at 1 p.m., at the Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee. Those attending the service, and anyone else wishing to, are invited to a celebration of Bill's life, from 2 to 4 p.m., at the Manistee Golf and Country Club.
      The family is being served by the Johnson Funeral Home in Manistee.
     
      DALE E. JOHNSON, 74, of Gaylord, died Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Otsego Memorial Hospital in Gaylord.
      Funeral services will be held today, July 18, 2004, at 3 p.m., at the Gaylord Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. James Mathis officiating. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery in Gaylord.
     
      MARY E. PATTINSON, 86, of Traverse City, passed away on Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, in Bradenton, Fla.
      A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at 1 p.m., at the Oakwood Cemetery, with a luncheon following at 2 p.m., at the Elks Club.
     
      MARGARET PEARL RUSHTON, 88, of Traverse City, died Friday, July 16, 2004, at Munson Medical Center.
      A private family service will be held.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Barbara J. Lott, 80, a resident of Traverse City, died on Friday, July 16, 2004, at Bortz Health Care. She was born in Bellaire on Jan. 7, 1924, the daughter of Clarence and Una (Smith) Orcutt.
      Barbara grew up at Fisherman's Paradise Resort on Lake Bellaire. She married Durwood Vandervoort, in Detroit, in 1947. He preceded her in death in 1969. She then married Booth Drane Lott, in 1972, in Traverse City. He also preceded her in death in 1986.
      Barbara was a graduate of Bellaire High School, class of 1941. She graduated from the Harper Hospital School of Nursing, in Detroit, in 1944. She worked as a nurse at Dearborn Industrial General Hospital and St. Mary's in Livonia. Barbara moved to Traverse City in 1961 and worked at Munson Medical Center. She retired, as the Director of Nursing, from the Benzie County Medical Care Facility in Frankfort.
      Barbara was a volunteer for the American Red Cross and RSVP, as coordinator of volunteers at the information desk of the Governmental Center. She was also a Probate Court volunteer. She enjoyed swimming, dancing, bird watching and reading. Barbara was a participant in the Senior Olympics.
      She is survived by two daughters, Judith Vandervoort of Troy and Susan (Al) Kniss of Traverse City; one son, Jeffery Vandervoort of Troy; two grandsons, Jason Kniss of Garden City and Christopher Vandervoort of Sanford, Fla.
      Visitation will be on Monday, July 19, 2004, from 5 to 7 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. An funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at 10 a.m., also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dr. Homer Nye officiating.
      The Barbara Lott family would like to thank the entire staff of Bortz Health Care for the exceptional care given to their mother.
      Memorials may be given, in her name, to the Bortz Health Care employee activities fund.

      LaMARQUE, Texas - Geneva Baldwin Rahr, 87, of LaMarque, Texas, formerly of Kingsley, died on Tuesday, July 13, 2004, in LaMarque, Texas.
      Geneva was born in Kingsley on Feb. 18, 1917, the daughter of John and Minnie (Mang) Baldwin. Geneva was a retired Registered Nurse.
      Geneva is survived by her daughters, Mary E. Baatz of Empire, Jacqueline (Glen) Martin of Kingsley and Rebecca (Michael) Alder of Chandler, Texas; two stepsons, Richard (Virginia) Rahr of Texas City, Texas and Larry Rahr of Pasadena, Texas; one stepdaughter, Jean Holmes, also of Texas; her grandchildren, William Hays, Cindy Bigelow, Lisa (Pat) Preston, Genita Boyd and Clinton Richison; 11 stepgrandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her three husbands, Clarence Voice, Howard Ferguson and Earnest Rahr; her daughter, Katherine Voice; one sister; four brothers; two great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
      Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 20, 2004, from 1 to 2 p.m., from the Covell-Smith Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., with the Rev. Stanley Hayes officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Evelyn L. Leahy, 96, of Traverse City, formerly of North Palm Beach Fla., died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Born Nov. 8, 1907, in Port Huron, she was the daughter of Charles Edsel and Ella Mires. Evelyn was a graduate of Eastern Michigan University. She had been employed as a teacher in the public school system and attended the Methodist Church. Evelyn was an accomplished pianist and artist. She was involved in running the family business.
      Survivors include her daughter, Marilyn Leach of Traverse City; her son, Richard (Annette) Leahy of South Hampton N.Y.; a brother, Ronald (Nancy) Mires of Coronado, Calif.; and a sister, Dorothy McIlquh of Chippewa Falls, Wis.; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
      Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, John Leahy.
      Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 19, 2004, at 1 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home. The Rev. John Ellinger will officiate. Burial will be in the Lakeside Cemetery in Port Huron.
      In remembrance, memorials may be directed to the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
     
      LAKE ANN - Beatrice A. Goin, 92, of Lake Ann, passed away on Friday, July 16, 2004, in Traverse City. She was born on June 27, 1912, in Thompsonville, to Jesse and Gertrude Tanner.
      Mrs. Goin will be remembered as a person who enjoyed her flowers and being outdoors. She was instrumental in preserving the Ransom Lake Natural Area.
      She is survived by her two daughters, Donna (Donald) Olney of Beulah and Vera (Albert "Dick") Carmien of Lake Ann; five grandchildren, Shelley, Gregory, Jeffrey, Max and Amy; six great-grandchildren; and five siblings, Edna Simmers, Louise Oligney, Philetus Smith, Ada Sims, and Leo Smith.
      Mrs. Goin was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Max A. Goin; and two siblings, Cecil and Dorothea.
      Visitation will take place today, July 18, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home in Beulah. The funeral service will be on Monday, July 19, 2004, at 1 p.m., at the Lake Ann Baptist Camp Bolthouse Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Ken Riley and Rev. Marvin Rosa officiating. The interment will be in the Linwood Cemetery in Long Lake Township.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be considered to the Munson Hospice House or the Almira Historical Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home and at the service.
      The Bennett-Barz Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
     
      BELMONT - Mrs. Leolyn "Monte" Laubach, 90, of Belmont, passed away Friday, July 16, 2004, at Metron of Cedar Springs. She graduated from Ravenna High School in 1931. On Jan. 6, 1936, the former Leolyn "Monte" Burley married Ivan Laubach. Together, they shared 63 years of married life until his death on Jan. 6, 1999.
      She is survived by her children, Duane and Kathleen Laubach of Central Lake, Mrs. Sharon Bryant of Grand Rapids, Kathleen and Ron Kasul of Belmont, and Nancy and William Wasserman of Sunrise, Fla.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her sister, Mrs. Jean Hunt of Montague; and several nieces and nephews.
      Mrs. Laubach was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Virginia Veselits, Vern Burley, Dorothy Martin, Catherine Fisher and Agnes Byers.
      Relatives and friends may greet Mrs. Laubach's family today, July 18, 2004, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Pederson Funeral Home in Rockford. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 19, 2004, at 11:30 a.m., also at the funeral home, with the Rev. Joseph Kenschol presiding. Interment will be in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Grand Rapids.
      Those planning expressions of sympathy are asked to consider the Hospice of Greater Grand Rapids.
     
      RAPID CITY - Angelene Elizabeth Barbara (Miller) VanCoillie, 94, of Rapid City, went to be with the Lord on July 10, 2004, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center-Long Term Care.
      Born on March 19, 1910, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Albert Andrew and Margaret Elizabeth (Opificious) Miller. Angelene married Frank VanCoillie on August 21, 1928. They resided in Detroit until 1948 when they moved to Rapid City, a small town that they both loved.
      Angelene was a member of the Rapid City Board of Education for many years. She worked for 11 years as Social Welfare Director of Kalkaska County and before retiring, worked as a Social Worker for the State of Michigan. Upon retirement, she spent her winters in Lakeland, Fla. Her loving family and friends were her greatest joy.
      Angelene is survived by her daughters, Carol (Maurice) Guy of Kalkaska, Virginia (Samuel) Guy of Bellaire; siblings, Vera Lowe of St. Clair, Corrine Page of St. Clair, Lester (Donna) Miller of Beverly Hills, Fla. and Albert Miller of Ann Arbor; grandchildren, Mark, Joel, Gary, Paul, Alan, Todd, Craig and Susan; and 20 great-grandchildren.
      Angelene was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Margaret Elizabeth; and husband, Frank, who passed away on January 3, 1963.
      Visitation will be held on Monday, July 19, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral Services will be on Tuesday, July 20, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Kalkaska Church of Christ, 152 S. Cedar Street, with visitation one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Clearwater Township Cemetery in Rapid City.
      Memorials may be made to Kalkaska Church of Christ and Bellaire Wesleyan Church.
      Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Florence M. Koontz, 97, a life-long resident of Elmwood Township, died Friday, July 16, 2004, at Bortz Health Care.
      Florence was born in Elmwood Township on May 22, 1907, one of eight children born to Fred and Agnes Mae (Clark) Nink. She married Sidney T. Koontz on May 19, 1930, in South Bend, Indiana.
      A telephone operator for Michigan Bell Telephone Company, Florence also had been employed at Pete's Café and Bakery. She was a charter member of West Bay Covenant Church, where she taught Sunday School and was active in the work of the church. She particularly enjoyed gardening, especially raising flowers. She enjoyed traveling as well. Florence also loved to spend time with family and friends at her cottage on Long Lake.
      She is survived by her children, Sharon (Forrest) Gregg of Traverse City , Sidney "Keith" (Linda) Koontz of Niles and Garner (Nancy) Koontz of Traverse City; five grandchildren, Dale, Mark and Matthew Gregg and Brad and Brian Koontz; three great-grandchildren, Becky, Maggie and Katie Gregg; and many nieces and nephews.
      Florence was preceded in death by her husband in 1970; her parents; and seven brothers and sisters, Lawrence Nink, Nina Leonard, Julia Janda, Earle Nink, Perry Nink, Margie Williams and Lloyd Nink.
      Visitation will take place Monday, July 19, 2004, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday. Florence's pastor, The Rev. Richard Skar, will be officiating. Burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      For those desiring to make a memorial contribution in Florence's memory, the family would suggest the West Bay Covenant Church.
