      Memorial services for AMELIA "EMILY" MAZUREK, who died July 18, 2004, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 1, 2004, at 1:30 p.m., at the Kingdom Hall, located on M204 in Lake Leelanau.
      Arrangements by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
     
      ELIZABETH ROSE "LIZZY ROSE" SHELTON, 15, of Interlochen, died early Saturday morning, July 24, 2004, at her home.
      A full obituary will appear in Monday's edition of the Record-Eagle.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      JOHN RICHARD STEFFENS, 58, of East Leland, died Friday, July 23, 2004, at his home.
      A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland, with the Rev. Lawrence K Matro officiating. There will be a visitation one hour prior to the service, also at the church. Burial will be in the East Leland Cemetery.
      Arrangements are by the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Ambrose A. Schaub, 90, passed away July 22, 2004, as the result of a heart attack, at the home of his granddaughter. He was working outside in the pond that he loved.
      Ambrose was born on December 21, 1913, in the town of Lake Leelanau, to Mark Andrew and Mary Marie (Stimel) Schaub. On August 14, 1933, he married Anna Louise Johnson, who preceded him in death in April of 1987. On June 3, 1988, Ambrose married Eileen Lillian (Loomis) Swanson
      Ambrose started out working for Johnson Randolph Wicker Furniture and Koenig Construction. Shortly after their marriage, Ambrose and Anna started a trucking business, doing long-haul trucking. Then they founded Ambrose A. Schaub Excavating. Starting from just a few pieces of equipment, they built it into a prosperous business. At his retirement, in 1989, he sold his business, Ambrose A Schaub and Grandsons, to Elmer's Excavating.
      He was a quiet philanthropist, being a founding father of Northwestern Michigan College, the Northwestern Michigan College Maritime Academy, the NMC Observatory, the NMC Madeline and All Faith's Chapel. Many area churches benefited from his generosity, including Saint Mary's of Lake Leelanau, Immaculate Conception, Christ the King and the Carmelite Monastery
      Ambrose was a life-time member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles 383, where he participated in their drill team. Other memberships included the Operators Union and Knights of Columbus.
      He will always be remembered for his love of playing cards, being exceptional at euchre and pinochle. Ambrose had been a frequent visitor to the Senior Citizen Center in the past. Other favorite pastimes were dancing and doing many handcrafts. Before his knees were affected by arthritis, every spring he would traipse the woods of his former farmland, Grey Hawk Subdivision, where he was usually successful in a hunt for morels. At lunch time, Ambrose most often could be found at the South Airport Burger King.
      He is survived by his wife, Eileen; by his only child, Avis J. and John C Hanell; three grandchildren, John A and Patty Hanell, Ralph A. and Peggy Hanell, Patricia "Trink" and James Hanes: eight great-grandchildren; 17 great-great grandchildren; step-children, Sharon and Clayton Oxley, Rhonda and Gaylon Harrison and Arthur and Sally Swanson; seven stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-great-grandchildren; his sister, Eleanor King; sisters-in-law, Anna and Jessie Schaub; and many nieces and nephews.
      Ambrose was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Elmer, Albert, Lawrence, Emmanuel, Alfred, Thomas and Ferman; and sisters, Cealia Drake, Bertha (Betty) Rinehart, Elizabeth Brow and Helen Hunt.
      Visitation will be today, July 25, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, July 26, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Immaculate Conception Church, where friends may call for one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in the Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to the Heart Association, Mass Intentions, the Carmelite Monastery or the charity of your choice.
     
      WILLIAMSBURG - Estelle B. Ruszkowski, 90, of Williamsburg, died Wednesday, July 21, 2004, at Tendercare of Traverse City. She was born, in Krackow, Poland, on Oct. 27, 1913, the daughter of Peter and Mary (Rogusz) Bos. Estelle married Stanley Ruszkowski, who preceded her in death in 1988.
      Estelle spent most of her life working as a homemaker, mother and school system employee. She loved gardening, landscaping, fishing and spending time with her family, who loved her dearly. She endured many hard times throughout her life and, yet, always maintained a happy outlook. Her strong determination and love of life and family sustained her.
      She is survived by her son, Stanley (Marty) Ruszkowski of Williamsburg; her daughter, Nancy (Bill) Zimmerman of Ellsworth; five grandchildren, James (Myongsoon) Olson of Traverse City, Connie Olson of Traverse City, Pam (Darryl) Smith of Mesa Ariz., Sandra Sauer of Coral Springs, Fla. and Mark Kowalewski of Las Vegas; and six great-grandchildren.
      Estelle was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Stanley; her daughter, Elaine Olson; her granddaughter, Jennifer Kowalewski; and her brothers.
      Visitation will be held on Monday, July 26, 2004, from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m., at the Covell Funeral Home in Elk Rapids, with funeral services to be held at 12 p.m. The Rev. David Mellor will officiate. Burial will take place in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Arrangements have been entrusted to the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      FIFE LAKE - Raymond John Gassel, of Fife Lake, passed away peacefully at his home on July 22, 2004, surrounded by his loving family.Raymond was born on June 15, 1921, in Brown City. His parents were Michael and Eva (Jones) Gassel. He married Jean Neihardt on June 17, 1947, in Kalkaska.
      Raymond served our country during World War II as a U.S. Marine. He was a resident of Fife Lake since 1947. Raymond retired from Cadillac Rubber & Plastics in 1983, after 21 years of service. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
      Surviving Raymond is Jean, his wife of 57 years; children, David J. (Cheryle) Gassel of Boise, Idaho, Alan (Susan) Gassel of Lake City, Michael J. (Marilyn) Gassel of Manton and Ann (Craig Newell) Dontje of Okemos; nine grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and his siblings, John (Edna) Gassel of Lapeer, Michael (Jean) Gassel of Livonia and Rosemary (Donald) Bently of Las Vegas.
      Visitation will be held on Sunday, July 25, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m., at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. The funeral service will be on Monday, July 26, 2004, at 2 p.m., also at the funeral home, with Elder Glenn Neihardt officiating. Interment will be in Clark Cemetery of Fife Lake.
      Memorials may be given, on behalf of Raymond, to Munson Hospice or the Grand Traverse County Commission on Aging.
      Arrangements were made by Wolfe Funeral Home.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Helen Finch Hollander died peacefully on July 20, 2004, in Leelanau County. She was born July 17, 1915, to Paul Finch and Rose Bartolovich on Strawberry Hill in Kansas City.
      Helen lived in Oakwood, Ohio, and Kettering, Ohio, for 50 years before moving to Leelanau County in 2002. She was the first woman bank officer in Kansas City, one of Kettering Medical Center's first volunteers, and, at the time of her retirement, the oldest Realtor in the Dayton area
      Helen is survived by her daughter, Carol R. Miller (Edward H. Miller, M.D.) of Cincinnati, Ohio; her son, Stuart J. Hollander, Esq. (Rosemary Hollander) of Suttons Bay; her step-son, Kenneth A. Hollander (Sharon Kiss) of Mendocino, Calif.; her half-sisters, Loretta Crawford, Alta Mae Papa and Margaret Fraundorfer; her grandchildren, Pamela Miller Breyfogle, Steven Jackson Miller, Matthew Jergensen Miller, Ian Howard Hollander, Catherine Belle Hollander, Mark Howard Hollander and Todd Vaughn Hollander; and seven great-grandchildren.
      Helen survived her parents; her husbands, Harold Roach and Howard I. Hollander; and a grandson, Edward Gaines Parker "Ted" Miller.
      Helen will be interred beside Howard I. Hollander at The Ferncliff Mausoleum in Ardsley, N.Y. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held at a time and place to be determined.
      Helen, who was famously industrious and thrifty, befriended many people and will be missed by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Ted Miller Trust for Camp Hayo-went-ha, P.O. Box 490, Suttons Bay, MI 49682. The Ted Miller Trust, of which Helen was a founder and trustee, provides scholarships to the Michigan YMCA Camp Hayo-went-ha on Torch Lake for teenage boys selected by probate courts in the Grand Traverse area.
     
      TRAVERSE CITY - Alvin Oscar Johnson, 75, a lifetime resident of Traverse City, passed away at the Birchwood Nursing Center on Tuesday, July 20, 2004.
      He was the son of Agnes Marie (Hallberg) and Oscar Martin Johnson of Traverse City, and was a veteran of the United States Army.
      Alvin is survived by his brother, Larry Martin Johnson of Tarzana, Calif.; and by two nieces and a nephew in California.
      Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at the Oakwood Cemetery, with the Rev. Ron Sinclair, of the First Congregational Church, officiating.
      The family is being served by The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
     
      CHURUBUSCO, Ind. - Annette Schuhler, 57, a native of Churubusco, Ind. and formerly of Lake Ann, died Thursday, July 8, 2004, at the Henry Mayo New Hall Memorial Hospital in Santa Clarita, Calif. She was born on April 18, 1947.
      Annette was employed as a medical transcriptionist at Munson Medical Center for several years. She spent most of her adult life in the area.
      The surviving relatives include her husband, Robert Schuhler; three children, Andy (Natalie) Schuhler of Castaic, Calif., Beth (Robert) Haeske of Saline, and Tim Schuhler of Hermosa Beach, Calif.; and four grandchildren, Amelia and Aidan Schuhler and Lydia and Audrey Haeske.
      Funeral services were held on Friday, July 16, 2004, at the Sheets and Childs Funeral Home in Churubusco, Ind. She was buried at the Eel River Cemetery in Allen County, Ind.
     
      FIFE LAKE - Pearl Ann Daniels, 88, of Fife Lake, died July 23, 2004. Born Feb. 3, 1916, she was the daughter of Perry and Elizabeth (Gallaugh) Ely. In July of 1938, in Fife Lake, she married Robert P. Daniels.
      Pearl worked for the Fife Lake School system preparing lunch for all the children there for more than ten years. She also assisted with the birth of many of her neighborhood children.
      She recently received a plaque commemorating her sixty year membership in Rebekuh order of the I.O.O.F. She was a charter member of the Fife Lake American Legion Post #219 and the Secret Pal Club. Pearl was a former member of the Michigan fiddlers association.
      She was fond of country and blue glass music. She gardened four acres of vegetables bordered by flowers. She enjoyed canning fruits and vegetables. Pearl loved the outdoors, deer hunting, mushrooming and picking blueberries. Prior to her husband's death, they traveled extensively together. Pearl will be fondly remembered for her peanut brittle and fudge! She loved spending time with family, especially for the Christmas holiday.
      Pearl is survived by three sons, Robert (Barbara) Daniels of Fife Lake, Doug (Janet) Daniels of Fife Lake and Doyle (Carole) Daniels of Cody, Wyo.; several nieces and nephews; nine grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1985; two grandsons; and three brothers.
      Visitation will be on Monday, July 26, 2004, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Covell-Smith funeral home in Kingsley. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at 10 a.m., also at the funeral home, with Pastor Dan Ingersoll officiating. Interment will be in the Clark Cemetery.
     
      CEDAR - Quentin Patrick Miller, 21, of Howell, died Tuesday, July 20, 2004, near Flatrock. The beloved son of John M. and Doreen was born July 12, 1983.
      Quentin attended Washtenaw Community College, in Ypsilanti, and was enrolling at George Mason University, in Virginia, this fall. He was a quiet and reserved young man who enjoyed building and programming computers.
      He is survived by his father, John M. Miller; stepmother, JoAnn Miller of Cedar; brothers, Nathan Miller of Cedar, Ryan M. Miller of Ypsilanti and Loren M. Miller, now attending MSU in East Lansing; two sisters, Ellen M. (James) Englehart of Fairfax, Va., Andrea S. (Mike) Miller of Howell; a stepbrother, Christian Morgan of Garland, Texas; two stepsisters, Michelle (Alan) Cantone of Philadelphia and Colleen N. Morgan of Cedar; grandmothers, Margaret Miller and Velma Haugen; and stepgrandmother, Florence Tracy.
      Quentin was preceded in death by his mother, Dorene E. (Haugen) Miller in 1999; grandfathers, John Joseph Miller and Harlan B. Haugen; and stepgrandfather, Walter G. Tracy.
      Friends may call for viewing on Tuesday, July 27, 2004, from 4 to 8 p.m., at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay, with a rosary being prayed at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at 11 a.m., at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Isadore, where friends may call one hour prior to the service. The Rev. Andrew A. Buvala will celebrate the Mass. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary cemetery.

      SAGINAW - Donald James Perry, 87, passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Covenant Health Care-Cooper in Saginaw. Donald was born Sept. 7, 1916 , in Saginaw, to the late James J. and Cora (Bashford) Perry. On Aug. 23, 1941, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Saginaw, he married Mary Kathleen Leidlein, who survives him.
      Don retired from Combustion Engineering, formerly Wickes Boiler, in 1976. Then he worked at Edward's Men's Shop until April 2004. Don was a charter member of St. Helen Catholic Church since 1950, where he was a member of their Ushers Club. He belonged to the Knights of Columbus #4232 for 56 years.
      Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Perry of Saginaw; five children, Kathleen A. Kostrzewa, Tim R. (Anne) Perry, both of Traverse City, Janis S. (Thomas) Conley, of Saginaw, Steven D. (Carol) Perry of Waterford and Michael J. Perry of Glendale, Ariz.; 14 grandchildren, Ann (Patrick) Shea, Mary Kathleen (William) Petrosky, David Kostrzewa, Susan (Cristopher) Crisp, Scott and Evan Perry, Jennifer (Jeffrey) Raab, Sara (Steven) Vance, Christopher Conley, Cassondra, Laura and Kevin Perry, Donald Alexander and Samantha Perry; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Nan C. Brubaker of Saginaw.
      Don was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Leo F. Perry; and infant daughter and infant son, Susan Elene and David James Perry.
      Friends may call at the Deisler Funeral Home, 2233 Hemmeter (off State), Saginaw, MI, on Monday, July 26, 2004, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., where a Scripture service will take place at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at 11 a.m., at St. Helen Catholic Church, 2445 N. Charles St., Saginaw, MI, with Fr. Robert Konopa, OFM officiating. Donald will lie in state at the church on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of Mass. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Cemetery.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Longtime cherry grower and Leelanau County resident, Raymond Earl Alpers, passed away July 23, 2004, at Grand Traverse Pavilions. Raymond was born on August 4, 1914, in East Leland, to the late Herman and Matilda (Vowinkel) Alpers.
      Raymond received his early education in the Houdek School in East Leland. In 1939 he married Margaret Plamondon, who preceded him in death in 1983. He was the manager of Redpath Orchards on Eagle Highway, just a mile from his birthplace, for 40 years until his retirement in 1979.
      Raymond was an active member of and held leadership positions in the Michigan Cherry Producers Association, the National Red Cherry Institute, the Leland Township Zoning Board, the Suttons Bay Rotary, St. Mary's Parish Finance Council and the Michigan Horticultural Society. He served on the board of directors of Cherry Growers, Inc. for 27 years, and as president from 1979-1981. In 1981 he was named Cherry Industry Man of the Year by the National Cherry Festival and the Cherry Marketing Institute.
      In the interest of agriculture, Raymond was chosen to participate in President Eisenhower's People to People Good Will Tour behind the Iron Curtain in 1963. In 1998 he received a Lifetime Service Award from St. Mary's Parish for his involvement and support of the parish and school. He was one of the original founders of the Sweetheart Dinner, a fund raiser to benefit Catholic education on the Leelanau Peninsula. In 1984, Raymond married the former Mary Kay Puma and made his home in Defreestville, N. Y.
      In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, Jerry of St. Augustine, Fla. and David (Jean) of Lake Leelanau; his daughters, Janet Alpers of Suttons Bay, Linda (Hugh) Rea and Nancy (Chris) Korbel, both of Traverse City; his stepdaughters, Maria Puma-Goldman and her husband Andrew Goldman of Fairfax, Vt. and Cris Puma-Ries and her husband Jonathan Ries of Averill Park, N.Y. He is also survived by eight grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his sisters, Delia Egeler and Emma Weiler; and his brothers Carl, Henry, Harold and Willard.
      Raymond will always be remembered as a man of his word with a high work ethic who was devoted to his family, his church and his community. Our beloved husband, father, stepfather, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law and friend will be greatly missed.
      In keeping with his spirit, the services will be delayed until after the peak cherry harvest with visitation held on Thursday, Aug. 5, 2004, from 6 to 9 p.m., at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. Memorial masses will be celebrated at St. Mary's Church in Lake Leelanau, on Friday, Aug. 6, 2004, at 10 a.m., and at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Troy, N.Y., at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Northwest Michigan Horticultural Research Station, 6686 S. Center Highway, Traverse City, MI 49684, to the St. Mary's Education Fund, Lake Leelanau, MI 49653 or to the charity of one's choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to Martinson Funeral Home, Suttons Bay, MI.
